LILY EVANS ⇢ AESTHETIC ( 1 / ? )
❝ I know my value. Anyone else’s opinion doesn’t really matter. ❞
{ stupid, dumb, blind chance } lily & james
Lily had that god-forsaken habit of twirling a strand of her hair mindlessly, and she mostly did it whenever she was trying hard to keep it together. It was James’ turn to try and hold himself together when she did that, it was so damn endearing. But it wasn’t his place to think so anymore, or maybe it had never been, but he was realizing just now. “A dragon? Makes sense.” James shrugged, his eyes fixed on Lily’s face but avoiding her eyes.
The music changed, and James had to literally bite his tongue in order not to let the burning words leave his mouth, it was physically painful to prevent himself from dancing with Lily, even though he knew there was little chance that she’d ever say ‘yes’. Before he could hold himself he babbled.“So, about the other day…”
There was silence between them and even though Lily was used to it since she was never against telling him she preferred it that way; Lily also knew that he was capable of a good conversation. Their time together the other day went well enough until she was leaving, of course. A sting inside her vibrated through her and the redhead was at a loss of what to do about it.
Her finger continued to twirl her hair until she noticed his gaze upon it and in embarrassment moved her hand back to the cup she held. Her grip on it tightened but she focused enough on not letting it crack and spill. Her body stiffened as he spoke up and she shook her head. “It’s--it’s fine, James. Really.” She had nothing else she was willing to admit out loud and Lily didn’t plan on letting him believe anything other than the fact that she was perfectly alright. The smile on her face was fake as she attempted to ignore going into the usual banter she held whenever he brought up the topic.

“Oh for fuck’s sake!” Lily dropped her bag heavily on the ground and kneeled down to pick up the stack of papers that had slipped out of her hands. Her entire day seemed to have been shit--in fact it probably had been her entire week. With a low growl she began to shove the papers in as neat a pile as she could manage to patience.

When she didn’t answer, James tried to fool himself into thinking she had walked away. But he was painfully aware of her closeness, and it only grew when she was forced out of politeness to move closer to her. Sweet Frank Gehry, don’t let me do anything stupid. He was too intoxicated in the party drinks, the hangover he was still trying to get over, the heartbreak and Lily’s scent, and James knew he had to be careful if he didn’t want to lose whatever chances he had to… Get a grip, Potter. There are no more chances.
Finally, he dared turn around to face her. Taking in her glowing (literally, for once) beauty for the first time in the night. James forced a polite smile on and nodded, trying to focus on a spot on her forehead, avoiding her entrancing eyes and any further intoxication. “I am, it’s a killer party Lily. Congratulations.” He complimented, his eyes falling on his decorated arms. “This? Nah, I did this myself at home… got some UV paint and free time before the party, you know, to be fashionably late, so I put it to good use. Though Marly did draw on my face, and maybe I am too trusting because I didn’t even ask what it was.”
Lily was completely confused as to why she wanted to talk to him or why she didn’t mind moving a little closer to him. He seemed far away from the party even though he was there, and she felt a punch in her gut on the thought that it was her that caused such a disruption in his usual temperament. She sipped from her drink only because it kept her mind preoccupied. The liquid courage within the red cup helped as well.
Her eyes followed wherever his went and she noted Marlene’s style of painting on his face from the marks on her own skin courtesy of their mutual friend. She twisted a finger around a strand of hair that had fallen in front of her eye--a habit that no matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t break. “Well your designs are nice.” She felt completely dull and wished to fall into a sink hole. She took another awkward sip of her drink. “She drew a dragon.”
In real life, I’m so brutally honest that it almost works against me sometimes.
It’s okay to get lost every once in a while, sometimes getting lost is how we find ourselves.

It would be much easier to avoid a certain redhead if the lights were on and her hair sparkled on its usual way, easily making her stand out from any crowd. But in between the mass of dancing, inebriated bodies, James had a hard time avoiding Lily. Everywhere he turned there she was. Maybe he should have just stayed at home, but he knew how much the party meant to Marlene.
He accidentally bumped on someone, and started to turn around to apologize, but his whole body froze – his arm halfway on its way to get a drink and everything – when he recognized the voice. Because even with the speakers blasting electronic music, James would recognize that voice anywhere. He could only hope it wasn’t mutual (even though it would have been fantastic if it were.)
“No, uh. It’s fine.” He said without turning around, finally moving his carefully UV-painted arm to get his drink, already devising a plan to run away as quickly as possible.
She recognized his voice. How could she not when it always seemed to haunt her whether she wanted it to or not. James Potter was quickly become a nuisance to her mind; not because he was nagging her -- though he did sometimes do that -- but because she couldn’t seem to push away the way he last looked at her. It was a look she’d recognized before. It was in the face of her ex-boyfriend the year before. And it was a look she had never wanted to see again. Yet, she mucked up once again.
A wave of self hatred and doubt filled her but she ignored it in favor of moving sideways out of the way to a dancing couple and ended up closer to him. This time she didn’t miss how distant he was even if he was less than a few feet away from her. She debated on whether or not to try and talk but the few shots she had had earlier in the night fueled her on. “Are you enjoying yourself? I see Marly got you plenty of glow sticks.” She should walk away and pretend nothing happened. That she hadn’t seen him; but her feet didn’t move.
“Bloody hell! So sorry I didn’t see you there!”
Glowsticks?! Lead the way Lily, I need to go wave those around under the blacklights immediately.
There are three actually! Marlene wanted to be confident there was ample blacklight coverage. She was adamant about it.
I’m here! Better late than never, right? What have I missed?
Welcome! Have you gotten your glowsticks yet?

wake me up | remus+lily
Realizing he never told his mates that he wouldn’t be home after class, Remus fished his iPhone from the bottom of his bag and clicked into the group text they all shared. He typed a short message: studying, alone, be home later and sent it out. He was nothing than the appreciative of the Marauders and the way they cared for him, of course, and learned to make it easier for all of them by checking in. If not, the three of them would be blowing up his phone in an hour making sure he didn’t fall and die (something he reminded them, quite often, wouldn’t happen.)
Sometimes Remus needed the peace and quiet from a lonely cafe that stood a chance of not being inhabited by James, Sirius, or Peter at any time. He enjoyed their company, but Sirius liked to distract him and James usually chatted over Remus’ focus and Peter, well – Peter wasn’t too bad. Really, he just needed some time to study because, last he heard, it was pizza and Grand Theft Auto night, and no work gets done on those nights.
He wasn’t opposed, however, to the company of a familiar redhead when her voice interrupted him. Remus looked up from his notes with a smile at Lily, and gestured to the seat across from him. “’Course not.” He shuffled his mess of papers and books away from her side of the table, and scooted his computer nearer to him. “How are you today, Lily?”
Lily hoped she hadn’t disturbed him. It was a pet peeve of her own and she usually was sure to always avoid being the same to someone. Remus was one of her closest friends outside of her own flat and she tended to jump at any chance to spend time with him. She eyed his spread of papers and books and smiled, knowing she did the very same when given the space. She smiled as she placed her tea down on the now empty side of the table. Sliding her bag off her shoulder, she equally slide gracefully down to the chair across from him.
Shrugging off her jacket, she was grateful for her very relaxed attire, mainly due to her mood as well as the weather. Besides if she were to spend a day working on homework, she was going to be comfortable. Lily settled before responding. “I could be better honestly.” On top of dealing with her family issues, she had to deal with the bundle of chaotic emotions that revolved around her encounters with James. “But I have tea and now good company, so surely that will brighten my mood. What about you?”
