“Is it another opinion piece in the Chronicle about the spa?”Â
“Yeah, but look at the terrible picture they used!” Magnolia exclaimed, holding the paper out for Colette’s inspection, specifically pointing to the group portrait of the Dubois siblings that had been taken several weeks previous. “Lord knows I try not to care too much about how I look, but picking that picture to run was just unkind.”
“I know it looks creepy, but it’s a collage I’m making my daughter. I’m not like…A psychopath…stalking a little girl from afar or something. I mean, I guess that’s what parenting is, but–No, she’s turning six, though.”Â
“Oh, alright.” Magnolia laughed lightly, still looking at Declan a little askance before turning her attention back to the collage. “Wait, isn’t that Delta? She’s in my sister’s soccer class, but I thought she was Margeaux Prescott’s daughter?”
“A parking ticket that Jeremiah filed against Talluluh for leaving her bike in the street? It is, and he did file it in the system so it had to be paid for. I took care of it, but someone owes me one fifty.”Â
“Oh I’m going to kick his narrow behind from here to next Thursday.” Magnolia fumed, running a hand through her hair. “And he’s going to pay you back James, don’t worry about that." Not that Tallulah didn’t need the occasional kick in the ass to remind her she wasn’t actually the boss of anything, but still.Â
“Honey, I’m not quite sure what that is myself,” Daphne retorted quickly and with piqued tone, as if she were worried the woman blamed her for the thick, black substance on the floor. “Is it tar?”Â
“Oh no, that there is absolutely some kind of potion gone awry. Best not to touch it, not that I think you’re tempted to.” Magnolia said with a wrinkled nose. It smelled like burnt hair and something like ammonia. “Why someone dumped it in the street is beyond me, though.”
“What, I did the dirty and sprouted a kid overnight? I’m babysitting for Deputy Collins. Paulette, meet Magnolia Rose.”Â
“You forgot.” Magnolia leveled her brother with an annoyed look before she smiled and waved at the familiar little girl. “What are you talkin’ about? Me and Paulette go way back. I’m talkin’ about that fact that you’re supposed to help me down at the store this evening, so who’s supposed to watch Tallulah, Savannah, Clementine, and now Paulette? Mason and Lenore? I think not. I’d like to come back to the house all in one piece thank you.”
Magnolia’s recurring presence in Miles’ life post their break up (which he couldn’t truly remember the cause of) was still something that he was getting used to, he thought as he blinked slowly at the woman before jerking his hand over to click the unlock button on the door. Still, he’d have to get used to it. As long as he stayed in Cendre Hollow. And in the orbit of her life via his connections to her family.Â
“Aren’t you a peach?” He asked as his eyes darted down to the cups in her hands. He needed a coffee.”Tired of sittin’ behind that desk up on the dementia unit or something?”Â
Being around Miles had been extremely painful initially, but she had forced herself to stay a fixture in his life post their breakup. She had known even then that she still wanted to be friends with Miles- despite the fact that they had broken up after Miles had had a less than stellar reaction to the knowledge that the Dubois siblings were witches, and it had become necessary to perform a memory charm on her suddenly ex-boyfriend. She had sobbed all the way through the spell, but protecting her family came first above all things.Â
“I can only listen to so many condescending and vaguely racist comments from the geriatrics with before I need a damn break.” Magnolia confirmed with a nod, carefully handing him his coffee before leaning back in the seat. “What about you? Slow night?”
Miles shot up from where he’d been lounging comfortably, eyes refocusing to the world as he tried to ID whoever had caught him sleeping in the passenger seat of his assigned ambulance. He’d been on the tail end of his lunch, he remembered, and had decided to close his eyes just for a second while he was still parked right off Main street.Â
“I’m a serious government employee, I swear.”Â
“Miles McLoughlin are you sleepin’ on the job again?” Magnolia demanded in a teasing tone, planting a hand on her hip. Miles was someone that she was still very fond of, despite the ah- unconventional way their relationship had ended. “I saw you over here and I just knew you were slacking again.”
“First thing this morning,ff–” Mason grumbled as he watched his older sister go to work, gently rubbing the spot in which she’d smacked him. His immediate response was going to be something along the lines of they’re not my kids, but he knew that’d only earn him something worse than a light smack. In the Dubois family, they were everyone’s kids, whether they liked it or not. “I can’t be watching them all day, sis. I got a full-time to get to just the same as everyone else.”
Mock gasping, Magnolia placed a hand over her chest, affecting a look of shock as she batted her eyelashes. “A full time job? Oh well my stars, what’s that like? I sit home all day eatin’ bon-bons and sippin’ champagne.” Tossing everything in a nearby toy box for lack of a better place for it, she gave the dog a pat before straightening with a groan. “Mason, tell me I’m too young to start saying that I’m too old for this shit.”

“So you stand there and watch?” Magnolia demanded, reaching up to (somewhat) lightly smack him upside the head. Crouching down with a muttered curse, she began pulling the various hair clips, scarves, and other dress up accessories off of the ancient bloodhound named Buster. Buster had once belonged to her grandfather, and was thus older than the sun and far too worn out and tired for the younger kids’ games- something Tallulah could not, or would not, understand. “Have I told you today you have no damn common sense?”
