okay friends here’s a quick Guide to Doing the Finals w/Mental Illness (feel free to add)

first of all, before finals, as much as you can: get cozy with teachers. go to office hours. have 3 questions written down that might actually help you, ask them. if you have anxiety about this stuff, rehearse beforehand, and keep the door open (it will feel less confrontational).

assume you will go into Bad Mode at some point. when you can, beforehand, start early. if it’s 2 sentences, a thought on what your thesis could be, whatever - get it started. it’s much easier from a start than from a blank page.

in assumption of Bad Mode, have your basic needs taken care of. if you know getting food is going to be difficult, stock up on snacks so that you force yourself to eat during the day. i don’t care if they’re oreos. you need to eat. if you can mix in some healthy stuff - nuts, carrots, apples, etc - go for it. but eat. buy dry shampoo for the days you can’t shower, or use corn starch. set out the clothes you will wear for the week.

if you can skip caffeine, do so. most of us won’t but… it does help anxiety.

find out if you study better with friends or alone. most “study groups” are a waste of time if people aren’t focused, and focusing on people and school is almost impossible with The Mental Illness, which wants you to not do work.

bribe yourself if you have to. “if i pass with [this average] i can buy all the things already in my amazon cart.” don’t go shopping, though. you’ll find yourself looking at strange shit for a dollar and it’s 4 in the morning and the essay isn’t written.

figure out what learning style you are and study using that. remember that if you doodle, you’re probably a kinesthetic learner - learn by doing. visual learners? flashcards. auditory? tape the lectures. kinesthetic? write it down, buddy.

make lists. they reduce anxiety and help you see that what feels overwhelming is only like 3 things.

figure out where you focus best. libraries or your room? 

protip: use the school’s computer. you know, the big embarrassing ones everyone can see? having your screen visible to others will help you stay on track - particularly because the people waiting to use the computers will be v annoyed with you if you’re not busy.

fire your inner critic. you’re on full Survive mode, pal. you don’t have to make everything perfect to your standards. i find myself pointlessly obsessing about colorcoding and pretty writing. no time for that anymore. it’s there, it’s legible? it’s good enough.

five page literary/research essay gotcha down? get your evidence all of it. write it in the document. then put your own words about it. a good method is “i’m gonna give you evidence. [evidence]. this is an analysis of the evidence”. then put a sentence before your first to transition into it. then put one after your last to transition out of it. suddenly you have a lot of words with what feels like very little work. 

wait to write introductions until the essay is done

citations made easier

white noise - good for study, stim, and also sleep

when you need to, just fess up. admit you have a problem. tell your teachers, talk to them about it, try to set up something to help you make up missing work. I want to say 95% of the time… teachers will do their best to pass you. they just want to see you try.

if you have trouble focusing on 1 thing at a time - do multiple homeworks at once. if you go on tumblr not even bc you care about this rotten website but because you just need something else, this will probably help you. two sentences on essay 1, three math problems, three words on essay 2? before you know it, it adds up.

i hear a lot of “quit social media!” but tbh if you reward yourself with like… human interaction… dont quit it. i’m like “okay i want to message him back but i need to finish X amount of work and then i can”.

honestly dress for success. if you’re in full No mode, it can be easy to wear the same thing 8 times in a row. if you pick out an outfit you love, and spend the time getting ready in the morning - it does help. and if you need to be in pj’s to attend the final? at least you’re there tbh.

grades are not a reflection of how much you learned, how hard you tried, or anything like that. they are frequently subjective. remind yourself that you are not defined by someone’s subjective amount.

tell a buddy about what you’re dealing with. have someone who knows. who listens to you. 

sleep helps you learn way better than cramming tbh

BACK TO SCHOOL: HABITS TO DEVELOP

hi guys! i’m back with a masterpost of sorts, and a positive one since my posts haven’t been the most optimistic recently… 

for some of us, back to school is right around the corner. for others (including me), we have a month left, and the realisation that school exists and we should probably start preparing is beginning to settle in. 

start waking up earlier: wow, wow, wow. the most generic ‘tip’ ever to exist. but it’s true - if you keep waking up at 12pm, you’ve already lost most of your day and don’t have all that much time to do stuff. so, wake up earlier. i wake up naturally between 7 and 9am anyway (9am is a lie-in for me, thank you body clock *eyeroll*) so this isn’t a huge thing for me, but goddammit if you want any chance of not being an angry teenage monster when you have to go back to school, start waking up earlier a few weeks before summer ends. 

follow your school routine: i saw this tip recently (i can’t remember who posted it, i’m so sorry! credit to you!) where you follow your school routine every morning, which can not only normalise it so you don’t associate that routine with school (that made no sense, i’m sorry - it just reduces the association with school, and when school comes around, you’ll hopefully associate it with summer break) but it gives you some kind of purpose in the morning so you don’t end up in bed all day with a jar of nutella for company…. i see you. 

journal: this doesn’t have to be a perfect bullet journal like the ones you see all over tumblr, or a planner. i mean a journal, to write in and press flowers in if you wanted to, and just sit and feel like those girls who sit under a big window with books and a handwritten inky journal with no technology in sight that you see on tumblr in the lead-up to autumn. (phew, that was a long sentence). this grounds you, but KEEP IT PERSONAL! not school related! as a person who’s brain works on associations, it’s important to keep potentially stressful environments and aspects of my life completely separate from places of solace (in this case, the journal, where i go to write and say everything i need to). 

have a ritual: yes, i’m a witch, so this could be a witchy ritual. but no, i’m talking about something you do weekly, whether it’s a friday night, a sunday or a mid-week pickup on a wednesday. this is an evening where you, for example, finish all your work by 8pm and then devote the rest of your evening to chilling. the fuck. out. put your books away and get your bag ready for the next day, and get up from your desk. draw a bath or take a shower. a long one. preferably a bath, so you can sit with bubbles and a book and chill out completely. then, make a cup of tea and sit in bed with a book or your journal, or an episode of your favourite netflix show. then go to sleep feeling really calm and at ease. 

do your work as soon as you get it: every year - every term (okay sorry, semester. jeez, i’m a brit. anyway.) for that matter - we say to ourselves that the second we get homework or a project, we’ll do it immediately. do we end up doing that? no. should we? yes. set that same goal this year, and at least try to do it. okay but seriously, this is important if you want to keep up, all jokes aside. 

check who you’re surrounding yourself with: are these people motivating? positive? do they lift you up, and keep you on the right path? or do they drag you down with their own woes that they drown you in, or do they belittle you, or make you feel like school is dumb and ruin the motivated mindset you had ten minutes ago? if so, leave. find new, better people who tick all the boxes. in school, you need a support base of people who help you academically, and listen to you - but remember, you need to be returning that. you need to listen to them when they need it, and help them in return. 

eating breakfast: i suck at eating when i’m not at school - in the three weeks i’ve been on summer break, i don’t think i’ve eaten lunch once. but school reminds me to eat, and i come v close to dying if i don’t eat breakfast before school, but i know that suddenly eating in the morning after six or seven weeks of… not… can suck and can make you feel pretty shit, so start doing it a week or so before - if you haven’t noticed, these habits are all things to start before school, so they’re already habits by the time summer ends! 

make a study group (chat): i’m kicking my social anxiety in the ass and i posted to my snapchat asking for people to message me if they’d be interested in being in a study groupchat on snapchat, which hopefully could turn into an actual study group when exams get closer. i’ve never done this before, but it seems promising so i highly recommend you try this as well! it doesn’t have to be a post-on-story-and-wait-for-applicants, it can just be your friends, and have that chat be strictly-study related, not just a groupchat. i had one like this last year, and we had strict rules that you weren’t allowed to talk about non-study stuff, since it was a group with my best friends and we had two other groupchats (i take things way too seriously lol)

types of study breaks for every situation

if you realize you’ve been studying for hours: grab a snack to refuel your body and watch a sitcom to refuel your brain. then back to the books.

if you’re feeling stressed out: take some deep breaths, text your friends, maybe stare at a wall for a few minutes. gather yourself.

if you can’t seem to focus: get moving and get outside. take out the garbage, check your mail box, maybe walk your dog. just get moving and get fresh air. it’ll help bring you back.

if there’s something else going on in your life and you can’t get it off your mind: write down what’s going through your head, sort of like a diary entry. it’ll help you work things out.

if you’re just mentally and physically exhausted: set a timer for 25-30 minutes and take a nap. any longer and you’ll hit REM and you’ll wake up feeling just as tired. once you wake up, get some caffeine in you.

if the material is boring as hell: find another way to study. see if there’s a crash course video online about it or draw out what you’re trying to learn in diagrams and pictures to make it fun.

if people around you won’t shut up: listen to some music. soundtrack and classical music is always good because they won’t absorb you as much as music with lyrics. white noise (like ocean waves, rain sounds, etc.) also works.

if you only half understand a concept: call/message a friend who’s not in the class and try to teach the material to them. this will help you mentally work through the material and will help you remember it as well.

Tips for Studying History!

I don’t see a lot of posts about how to effectively study for history classes, so I’m going to give it a shot! Warning: long post coming up!

Practice identifying the significance of something. The entire point of history is to learn the significance of different events and people. I guarantee that at some point you will be asked to state the significance, which is where this comes in handy. Also, knowing how to do this will vastly improve your essays.

Use timelines. Even if your teacher doesn’t make it mandatory to know dates, you should understand the order that major events happen. I will either write out a timeline or order my cue cards in the order they belong in after studying. Also, if your teacher does mark dates, you can at least be sure you know the decade it happened in even if you don’t know the full year.

Write extremely thorough notes. In some classes, like math, if you get something really well, you can kind of relax on the depth of your notes. I do not recommend this in history! Write down everything that seems important: names, dates, symbols, fun facts. The more you know, the easier it is to get full marks on a test without bullshitting.

Don’t rely on crash courses or internet research while studying. Your teacher taught you what they want you to know. While watching a crash course video might  be a good way to start preparing for a course while on summer vacation, it is not an effective way to study for a test. The information in the video is not what you were taught in class, so it won’t be that helpful. Internet research is the same – you can easily find dates and locations, but the specific information taught in class can only be found in your personal notes.

Talk to people in the class. Some things in history are open to interpretation. A good way to get lots of opinions and viewpoints on a certain subject is to hold a study group and discuss the material. You guys can also help each other remember small details from the notes. Certain things will just stick in your brain while others won’t, so reviewing the notes with other students is a really good way to make sure you aren’t missing anything.

Write essay outlines. In a history class, you will probably be writing a lot of essays. So many of my friends have massive problems with history essays because they don’t organize them prior to writing. If you just start talking about an event and don’t know where to go next, you’re going to have a total trainwreck. Organize your thoughts!! Plan what you are going to write!! It doesn’t take that long and it will save your life every time you write an essay.

Read “Politics and the English Langauge” by George Orwell.

Learn how to write footnotes manually. Writing footnotes and formatting your paper yourself isn’t that hard to do. It will help you out a lot when Word isn’t working or something goes wrong with the formatting feature.

Be an expert during presentations. If you are doing a presentation, be an absolute expert in the topic. Try not to read from any notes and be sure that you can answer any questions the class or teacher might have. Presentations are a good way to boost your mark, so try and be super knowledgeable and impress your teacher.

Learn how to write a thesis. If you’re writing an essay, your thesis should be clear. In high school, you can usually figure out what your thesis should be by figuring out what the main question you’re trying to answer is, then answering it. Make sure that your answer is focusing on just one viewpoint, not somewhere in the middle. And, ask a teacher or friend to look at your thesis before you start writing!

Memorising

write quotes down on a flashcard and highlight the specific words or phrases that you will be analysing later in the paragraph. Test yourself on the highlighted phrases, then progress to the whole quote. This way, if you have a mind blank of the full quote in the exam, you will still likely remember the small quotes to analyse!

Read the information out loud. Try and recite it from memory once you are more confident.

Grab a friend and talk them through your essay or essay plan, and get them to tell you if you miss out any key points. This is especially useful if both you and your friend are studying the same topic!

Write each of the topic or subheading titles on a small piece of paper, fold it up and put all the pieces of paper in a box. Set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes (or however long you would have in a test situation), then pick one topic from the box and write as much as possible about the topic from memory. Once the time is up, check what you have written. You will be surprised at how much you are able to remember!

Make sure you know which historians, critics etc. you will be referencing to in each essay. To be able to learn the quotes, you first must know the name of the person you’re quoting!

Flashcards are your best friend for memorising! Separate these by topic rather than having a big pile of flashcards as it makes revision much easier.

Prioritising

Thin out your hefty lever arch folder into an A4 ‘revision folder’ This should include the final copy of the essays you’ve written, a list of all the dates, acts and quotations you’re using, questions from past papers and any other handouts you find particularly useful! This makes it much easier to find the specific things you need rather than raking through millions of irrelevant worksheets!

In the run up to the exam, practice essays under exam conditions (including timing!) Print out essay prompts on small pieces of paper and choose one, then write that essay as if it came up in the exam.

Train your hand to write fast but semi-legibly. Unfortunately pretty handwriting is not something that is achievable in essay based subjects!

Unless it really helps you, rewriting notes is not the most effective way of revising essay writing!

Choose quotes that can be used in multiple essays so you don’t have as much to learn!

Structuring

Introduction

An introduction for an essay discussing a novel, film etc. usually follows the TAGLS structure. This is Title, Author, Genre, Link to essay question and Summary of the plot.

A basic introduction for a subject like history usually has a basic structure of Context, Line of Argument and Factors you will be arguing.

Your summary of the plot or background context should not retell the story! I usually limit this to under 5 sentences!

Generally, don’t say “In this essay I will…”

Main Body

A basic English structure is: Topic Sentence, Evidence, Evaluation and Link back to Question.

It is not always necessary to have a quotation 100% accurate, the examiner wants to see your ability to analyse the novel, not your ability to memorise quotes!

Short quotations are usually included in a sentence and marked by quotation marks, whereas long quotations are indented into the paragraph.

Always unpack your evidence! There is no point in knowing the quote and just leaving it hanging at the end of a sentence. Do this in a way that concisely puts your argument across by commenting on the technique or what the point shows, and mention connotations of words and images.

Link back your evidence to the essay question throughout!

For history essays I usually structure my paragraphs with a few sentences of knowledge (where I mention any acts or dates) Analysis of why the point was good, and then argue the other side. Usually counter-analysis starts with a historian’s viewpoint and then develops into a “this shows that” point.

Conclusion

Sum up the basic points of your essay! Usually I write one sentence to sum up each paragraph.

Sometimes it is OK to start with “in conclusion”, but try to think of more inventive ways to word it!

End the essay with a punchy sentence! (AKA a mic drop moment)

Other things

Note down any websites you reference as you go! This makes your life wayyyy easier.

Keep a post-it note on or near your computer with the referencing structure on it!

Print out a copy of your essay and mark it yourself according to the marking guide before turning it in. It’s easier to proofread when it is on paper in front of you rather than a screen!

Surviving

Essay based subjects can be very overwhelming, especially if you are expected to memorise multiple essays (SQA Higher History I’m looking at you) but try not to let this get to you!

Starting well in advance makes it much easier when it comes to the exam!

If you receive a question that you really don’t know how to answer, don’t panic!Take a breath and see if you could change the wording question to suit you. It’s better to write a basic essay than nothing at all!

Don’t be afraid to take a night or so off from essay based revision! It is very intense and your brain needs time to process!

Good luck to everyone in their essay-based subjects this school year! Essay subjects require hard work and dedication but don’t push yourself too much! If you put in the effort you will achieve great things!

Note-Taking & Studying Tips

Hey everyone, it’s me (Evie)! 

This afternoon I was fortunate enough to benefit from a study tips lecture at school. Usually these sessions bore me, but I found that today’s lecture actually provided some useful tips, many of which I’d never heard of before, let alone consider using within my own study sessions! I had never doubted my study methods until now. My ( now previous ) method has always been unnecessarily time-consuming and probably wasn’t benefitting me an awful lot, contrary to the obvious goal of studying. This new method is based on scientific evidence to improve students’ memory and aid students’ in achieving better results at school. I personally plan to use this new ( and definitely improved ) study method from today onwards - I hope you’ll do the same!

Note-Taking

Take notes throughout the entire term / course. Take notes from your textbook, your teacher / professor’s digital presentations and talks, videos provided by your teacher / professor, and anywhere else you can retrieve useful information from! Even if something seems insignificant, jot it down! It could be helpful in the future.

Finish up taking notes 3 weeks before the exam. Once you’ve reached this period of time, it’s time to start revising the notes you’ve already written down. Sure, if something seems significant and you want to jot it down, then add it to your notes, although restrain yourself from adding too many new notes at this time. Focus on revision. 

Store the notes in a folder - digitally, physically, or both! Organisation is critical. Storing your notes correctly can also save time, which is handy when you’re short on time to study. This storage method can also improve your memory: continuously flipping back and forth between different topics and / or notes creates a “blockage” in your brain that prevents you from remembering information correctly. Organised folders create not only a simpler studying experience, but also helps you to remember the information more effectively.

Create lots of space on your notes. Cluttered pages of notes can be difficult to memorise because there is simply too much information for your brain to learn and process. Notes with fewer words work much better. 

Use plenty of colour - highlighting is especially important! Always remember to highlight important text, and especially the most important words. Another useful tip is to use a different colour for each subject if you can. For example: use blue for everything related to English, from highlighting text to the colour of your sticky notes to the folder you store loose papers in. Associating a certain colour with a certain subject can help your brain to group that knowledge together and find connections within the learned information. Recalling the colour of the subject in your exam can also help you to recall more information about the topic. 

Use trigger words. For example: instead of writing “buy the $20 calculator for the math exam tomorrow” on a note, you could rather write “$20 - calculator”. You understand the meaning of the simplified text, but you only require the trigger words to recall this information. This is useful when taking notes - the less words you use, the better! In fact, most people need to reduce the number of words in their notes by approximately 80%! Find trigger words and use them to create your notes. This also significantly reduces the risk of plagiarism. 

Studying

Use criteria. If your teacher / professor provides you with the criteria for your subject, use it! If they don’t, you can create your own criteria. Clarify the key points of the subject / task with you teacher / professor and form a list of these points. Highlight significant words and the most important points. This criteria can be used to construct a response if necessary, or it can provide you with the guidelines of your study requirements to aid you in achieving a higher grade. 

Memorise all of your notes at least 2 weeks before the exam. Review your notes immediately after writing them, the next day after you wrote them, and then on a monthly basis, or more often if required. Once you’ve memorised all of your notes, you can then use them to fill out past papers and form practise tests. 

Use mind-mapping - always include the title, subheadings and trigger words to sum up your notes! A mind-map is simple to remember and handy to redraw in an exam - it’s like cheating, except you’re 100% following the rules!

Fill out practise papers in the 1-2 weeks before your exam. This will tell you what you need to focus on more while studying. Complete 3 past papers per subject or more if you can ( your teacher / professor should be able to provide them if you ask ). You can complete these past papers using your notes, although try to complete at least 1 without them. Don’t forget to have it marked!

Read extra texts that cover the key points and criteria of the exam. Extra information is always helpful and will always benefit you. Look for quotes, deeper knowledge and counter arguments.

Use colours! Similarly to when you took notes - add more colours! Colour coordinate your subjects!  Highlight trigger words! Read the “Use plenty of colour” under “Note-taking” if you haven’t already - all the information you need is up there!

― How to write an essay as an undergraduate history student

These are general guidelines to help undergraduate students write better essays. *Note that every assignment is different. You should take the time to closely read the instructions and meet with your Professor if necessary. I hope you will find these useful and good luck writing your papers!

B E F O R E   Y  O U   S T A R T

Make sure that you have closely read the instructions as presented by your Professor. There are many different types of historical essays (argumentative essays, historiographical reviews and so on). It is imperative that your style is adapted to the type of essay you are required to write.

Gather all your information. Some Professors want students to write essays using only class material, others expect them to do more research.  If the latter, make sure to gather all (most) of your information beforehand. If you are a university student, you  have access to a library and many academic journals. Use this access and make sure to ask librarians for help when needed.

Take careful notes as you are reading in preparation for your essay. If your Professor provided a specific question, make sure to read critically for information that is susceptible to help you answer this question. If your Professor has not assigned a question, you should still read carefully and try to find the different ways in which historians address certain issues. 

Some students prefer not to plan essays, others do. I suggest planning as it may be the best way to map out your ideas and begin forming an argument. It is impossible to cover all the facets of a problem in one essay, therefore, planning your essay may be the easiest way to make sure your work covers important aspects of a given issue. Planning will also help ensure that all your arguments remain connected and support a central claim.

Find a few (preferably history) essays that you find well-written and pay special attention to their structure. While you should be careful never to be so inspired as to be tempted to copy (this is a very serious academic offence) the goal of this exercise is to find more academic vocabulary and see how it is used by actual scholars. 

W H E N    W R I T I N G 

If your Professor gave you a question to answer in advance, make sure you answer this question and this question only. While you should always supply your arguments with pertinent examples, these should be succinct and focus on the main contention debated in your essay.

Make sure your essay has a thesis statement (yes, even when you are asked to answer a question). Your Professor should know from the very beginning of your essay what you will be arguing and what position you will take. All subsequent paragraphs until your conclusion should serve to better make the case for your thesis.

Try to follow the “classical” essay model, that is: introduction, body and conclusion. 

Began each paragraph with a topic sentence announcing the focus of the next few lines. Conclude the paragraph by rephrasing the main idea and possibly by trying to make a connection with the next body of text.

Always bring evidence to support your arguments. This evidence may come from the work of other historians are from a passage of a primary document. Whatever the case may be, make sure that your arguments are solidly built and “defended”.

Introductions and conclusions are (usually) not optional. Your introduction should help the reader understand what the text will argue and how it will proceed to do so, while your conclusion finishes the text by summarising key points and perhaps even making a suggestion for future studies. (An additional tip may be to write a simple introduction at the beginning and then rewriting it when the essay is finished. Once you are satisfied with your introduction, you may copy and paste it as your conclusion making necessary adjustments and avoiding copying the exact sentence structure. The point here is to use your introduction as a guide to write your conclusion.)

Be precise, you are writing a history paper, dates and names matter. 

Be clear and concise but make sure that all your points are well-developed. 

G E N E R A L   T I P S 

Locate your argument in historiography. As a historian in training, it is important that you show your Professor that you understand there are debates regarding specific interpretations. It is also important that you demonstrate that your line of argumentation is supported by the work of experienced researchers. Even if your essay primarily focuses on primary document analysis, surely some have analysed this text or object before, make sure to mention these scholars and their contributions to the debate.

Citations should be used wisely. As said before, it is important to ground your argument in the work of other historians. In this sense, citations are immensely useful. That being said, depending on the length of your paper, too many citations may suggest laziness as you have made little efforts paraphrasing. A few carefully selected and well-integrated quotes in your paper should do the trick.

Unless prohibited (for some odd reason) by your Professor, use footnotes to give additional information. Using footnotes to engage in discussions that are important but that otherwise cannot find their place in your text will show your Professor that you had a strong command of the topic at hand. It is also the best place to suggest further readings.

Study Tips: Colour-coding History

I think it would be nice to share with you the very basic system I’ve decided to use when reading through my history textbook!

Now that I’m revising every chapter writing down the main points, I immediately get what each paragraph is about. This helps to prioritise information: you fix in your mind what is likely to be the first thing you should say when answering a question, the date+event or main causes from which, secondly, you’ll move to broaden the topic.

Here’s my colour code, as an example for everyone who studies History:

Blue: main event

Red: date associated to the blue event

Yellow: causes that made the event happen, factors that have influenced the situation

Green: key words (the name of an office, a technological innovation, a social class - those things that are well-suited for a question like this: “What is a ~key word~?”)

Pencil: simple underline other things that complete the event, that explain what happened and how.
