I'm Elisa (she/her, 30+), here to share with you about my beautiful country: Italy. San Lorenzo

Today, August 10th, in Italy we celebrate San Lorenzo (Saint Lawrence), and by tradition tonight is the night of shooting stars (but science proved that also the following nights can be blessed with them).

Oggi, 26 luglio, si celebra Sant'Anna. Secondo la tradizione di alcune località italiane, è meglio evitare di fare il bagno: si dice che in questa data la Santa si prenda sette (o tre, nel comasco) vite. Il proverbio del Lago Maggiore dice "A Sant'Anna l'acqua del lago inganna": infatti nei secoli in questa data sono annegate molte persone. In Toscana invece, sembra che ci fossero dei contadini che invece di celebrare la Santa, si misero a lavorare e bestemmiare: all'improvviso il terreno si aprì con un grande boato creando una voragine che si riempì d'acqua e li fece annegare.

(E poi noi oggi beviamo l'acqua Sant'Anna, per dire... Forse meglio passare a un altro santo per oggi, tipo San Bernardo o San Benedetto? Non so)

Today, July 26th, we celebrate Saint Anna. According to the tradition of some Italian areas, it's better to avoid to bathe/swim: on this day it's believed that the Saint takes away seven (or three, in the area of Como) lives. The saying in the Lago Maggiore's area (in between Piedmont and Lombardy) goes like "On Saint Anna's day you get deceived by the water of the lake": through the centuries on this day in fact many have drown. In Tuscany instead, it seems that there were some farmers who instead of celebrating the Saint, were working and swearing: suddenly the ground opened with a terrifying noise and it created a hole that got filled with water and drowned them.

Oh it's a tradition also in a village on the borders between Lombardia and Piemonte. Its patron saints are San Pietro and Paolo so people there do it mostly on the night between June 28th and 29th. The tradition consists of putting a glass recipient filled with water on a field and drip the white of an egg inside the water. The recipient needs to be left out in open air the whole night so that it can inglobate dew (or better, cause San Pietro could pass by and blow into the recipient). The morning after old farmers, according on how the boat's sails look, could predict how the next year would have been like (you can still kind of predict weather or maybe even moods for your year? who knows). If sails are open, there will be sunny days while if they're closed or thin, there will be rainy days.

Afa = sultriness, humid heat "Che afa" o "c'è un'afa incredibile" (=it's so humid and hot) lo puoi sentire ogni tanto, ma è più comune sentire lamentele sul caldo in generale, o su come ci sentiamo appiccicaticci (a causa dell'afa) Puoi anche sentire "che cappa" o "c'è una cappa incredibile"; cappa = afa, o quasi, ma è forse un po' più comune (almeno nella mia zona) La cappa (=hood) è più in particolare quella sensazione di calura che ti schiaccia, quando non c'è aria ma alcune nuvole. Today I made some "pesche ripiene" (peaches filled with amaretto biscuits and dark chocolate 70%) for my family. I'd have loved to take a pic but my brother kinda ate them all so yeah, I can only show you a pic from the internet:

The one I follow it's probably not the real and actual Piemontese recipe (yes, it's a typical Piemonte's dish fom what I know), but my mother, who is not a huge fan of amaretto biscuits, appreciate it too, so I stick with this version (honestly one of the many that you can find online. Sadly I cannot recall the one that my grandma used to follow, but it was pretty close to this one).

If you want to try it, here's what I do: Take around 80-100g of amaretto biscuits and grind them. Then take 3-4 peaches (better if they're not too ripe), cut them in half, remove the kernel and add the pulp to the amaretto biscuits. Grind and blend it all together. Put a chocolate bar (100-120g, cut it into smaller pieces) in a bowl and put it on a small pot filled with boiling water, so to make the chocolate melt and have basically a fluid chocolate. Remove the bowl from the boiling water and wait a little for it to turn lukewarm. Add the mix of amaretto biscuits and peaches to it, and blend it all together with a spoon. Put the half peaches on a baking tray with parchment paper, fill each of them with one/two spoons of the blend. You can cover each peach with some hand-crumbled amaretto biscuits if you like to (I don't do this on each of them cause my mother may not like it). Put it in the oven, 200°C for 10 minutes (you just need to make the peaches a little more soft... according on how ripe they are, you may leave them inside the oven a little more). And that's all.
