Summary: You and Sirius have a run-in while both at Hogwarts for the holidays (Non-house specific Reader).
It was Christmas at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and most of all the students had gone home a few days prior for the holidays. The halls of Hogwarts were barren and quiet, an unfamiliar yet somewhat refreshing change to their usual hustle and bustle.
If one listened closely, they could hear the low sound of Christmas music radiating from the kitchen, intriguing even the grumpiest of scrooges. The intoxicating aromas of gingerbread and sugar seemed to spread throughout the surrounding hallways in waves.
Sirius Black, a student who would rather jump headfirst into the Black Lake in the freezing water than go home for the holidays, was wandering the halls when he smelled the distinct smell of gingerbread. Following the smell, it brought him to the ‘secret’ entrance to the kitchens. He had been there many times before, especially after discovering the entrance back in third year thanks to the Marauders Map.
Thinking the house elves were whipping up some things for the small Christmas feast later that day, he found himself tickling the pear of a nearby painting, the entrance to the kitchens swinging open. What he walked into was a scene he was not expecting.
You sat on one of the countertops, legs crossed, tapping along to the beat of the music. A bowl of batter sat in your lap, mixing it intensely while the oven ticked beside you. House elves moved around you, preparing various other foods, not caring at all that you were there. He watched you for a few moments as you hummed along to the song, spinning around on the countertop and grabbing a baking tray. As you turned to grab a spoon, you finally spotted him, silently watching from the doorway.
“Oh crap,” you exclaimed, his figure scaring you half to death as you practically fell off the counter. All the house elves stopped what they were doing to look at you before following your gaze to Sirius. They narrowed their eyes at him, knowing that the young Sirius Black usually came and went without a word, taking any type of food he wanted.
“I didn’t mean to scare you,” he said, moving farther into the kitchen. You said nothing as you brushed off your shirt, extra flour covering it in your fright.
“Is Mr. Black bothering you ma’am,” A house elf nearby asked, causing you to laugh at Sirius’s shocked expression.
“No Pokie, it’s quite alright. And what did I tell you about calling me ma’am,” you said teasingly, the house elf giving a sheepish smile before scuttering away. All the other house elves got back to work at once as you chuckled to yourself, your gaze moving up to reach Sirius’s.
Of course, you knew of Sirius Black. You had interacted with him a few times, being in the same various classes over the years, but nothing prolonged. He was handsome, that was for sure. And as he stood there, slightly dumbfounded at the scene around him, you couldn’t help but smile.
Sirius knew he had seen you before, but couldn’t quite remember a time when you had talked. He had never really had a reason to talk to you, until now. Right now, you had flour across your forehead in a line, as if you had wiped your fingers across it on accident. Your hair was up and out of your face, a few stray strands making their way into your eyes. You were in casual clothing, but Sirius couldn’t deny it, he found himself smitten.
“You know all of them?” He asked after a few seconds, fully walking into the room now, looking down at the cookies you were making.
“The elves?” you asked, him nodding his response.
“Yeah, I come here a lot on my free time, especially during the holidays when no one is really around. The castle can get pretty boring,” you said, the oven beeping behind you. You quickly shut it off, squeezing past Sirius to grab the oven mitts. His hands gently went to your waist as you slipped by, causing a blush to raise on your cheeks. You were quick to slip them on and open the oven, the heat of the oven hiding your flushed cheeks.
“Why didn’t you go home for the holidays?” He asked inquisitively.
“Why didn’t you?” You asked back, raising your eyebrows, gently lifting the cookies off the tray with a spatula.
“Touché,” he said with a laugh, jumping up onto the counter you were previously on, “Would you believe me if I said I have crazy parents that practically want to disown me?”
You stopped what you were doing to look up at him, his gray eyes looking straight into yours. His practically neutral expression hid a hint of sadness, a hint only one would notice if they had it too.
“Would you believe me if I said the same?” You asked seriously, both hands against the counter. Sirius blinked a few times before raising his hand up, tilting his head towards it as if he wanted you to grasp it. You placed your hand in his as he moved it up and down, shaking it.
“Hi, I’m Sirius Black, and I would very much like to get to know you better.”
