The Consumers Clap back on Bias in the Media

Our final project (Jennelle, Raul and I)  allowed us to tackle an issue that affects a lot of us. Media and the Bias in coverage on particular news events in relation to sensationalism, terrorism and race. The process of making this project was quite difficult because it was slightly hard for us to live up to the expectations that we set for ourselves in our last project. :)

However….

Although, we were unable to provide visual details to accompany our voices. We were able to provide you with important thoughts and ideas that we hope could encourage you all to think deeper about the things we are told and shown.

Since media bias is such a BIG issue to tackle, we thought that it would be important to provide explanations for why it exists and then show examples of it in the media. Which would better help us explain to you all, why media bias is important for us to discuss and dissect. Also one of our goals was to highlight how language has definitely played a role and somehow impacts the way media serves us biased opinions to the people. And the three things that we broke our project down into were Sensationalism, Terrorism in the Media and Racism in the media.

For the first part of our project we started with blog posts. In each of those blog posts, we were able to give background on our subtopics that would somehow help us to help you all understand the different things that play into media bias. Each blog post, consisted of pictures and information of some sort that could help us backup some of the things that we believed media bias played into.

Initially we planned on doing a video talk show that would follow up with our last video. However, due to last minute restraints that had a lot to do with timing and the fact that finals are rolling around (Boo!) we decided to do a podcast instead. Although, it was a last minute resort for us, we figured that although there would probably be no video component that would be added, we would substitute that with more of our thoughts and our information that we got during our research to explain why Media Bias is such an issue.

When it comes to the some of the challenges that we had, I can say that timing might have played a very big role in all of this because as you know the semester winding down means preparation for finals is starting! However, that didn’t in anyway hinder our ability to create a high quality project, that although not visually there, it was allowed us to share our thoughts and expand on the blogs that we posted. That brings us to some of the strengths of this project, I think it allowed us to challenge some of our thoughts concerning the things that we are seen and shown in the media. I think that as a result we were able to put that in a podcast, that we hope can challenge others to think bigger and grander just like it did us

Media Bias and Tragedy

Sometimes with all the information around us we become so desensitized to what happens in media, that when something happens we believe that this is what the media should do. They should cover the issue and topic at hand. However, do you ever question why the media chooses one story over the other, especially when it holds just as much weight and value for the purpose of informing humanity?

For my final project, I plan on working with Jennelle and Raul to discuss the way media picks and chooses the specific type of tragedy or stories to cover. Some of the motivations for this project is to unearth why this is the case, since there are people in the world who are oppressed and hurting and what people around the world to hear their stories to somehow provide solidarity and help. We want to know what factors weigh into the reasoning behind the media’s decision to cover one topic over the other and how does that effect the tragedies and the issues that the public chooses to sympathize over. Also taking a look at language used and how language can often alter the point or the coverage that the media is choosing to cover. As we examine this, we hope to somehow show how race can play a part in this particular phenomenon. There is something to the instant coverage of a terrorist attack in Paris by ISIS but not an attack on the same day in Nigeria by Boko Haram, a group that is funded and trained by ISIS militants. By choosing to cover one story over the other, it can be said that the media is making somewhat of a statement to the world, in regards to what stories hold more weight and should be cared about more to the public. The overall goal here for us is to understand or show why the media chooses to show one tragedy over the other. And what ways do race play into it.

It's still somewhat unclear how we want to display this but we figured that between blog posts or video, we could dig deeper into why this is the case. Also if we continue with our theme of activism for our last video, we could possibly interview local activists or people who have had trouble getting their causes or issues heard, due to the media bias and coverages of more “sexy” or “sensational stories”  I also think that somehow incorporating a social media aspect would be good to show or be somewhat of the proof as to everything that we are trying to say. Basically on Facebook and Twitter and showing what people are talking about in relation to these different tragedies.

Some of the questions that would be worth asking are:

What ways can we bridge the gap in the ways media is choosing to cover certain stories?

Who are the people that are being covered and highlighted in these events?

How does the media choose to portray the individuals that cause these problems?

How do people respond on social media? (i.e, changing profile picture to Paris colors for “support”)

What does this say about the importance society puts on certain lives over others?

How To Informational Videos

I really enjoyed this video because it was something that we can relate to being that all of us pretty much have to take a Rutgers bus at some point or time during our college experience here. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been to get on this buses and try to film this so kudos to you all because that takes a certain amount of dedication. Everything flowed properly as you transitioned from one point you were making to another. I also like the memes that you put in between your actual footage along with that picture of Stan the LX driver (he was the best). My only suggestion would have been that the lighting inn the room where you all were using the white board was pretty dim, perhaps it had something to do with the editing but I think overall it was a great video. Next year’s incoming freshmen class should definitely view this video!

Let me start off by saying that I am a major FOODIE so anything related to food, I am there which is partly why I enjoyed your video so much. I like the step by step part of the video that shows us the ingredients and literally showed us how much and basically how to prepare each ingredient for the meal. And I thought the video was important to millennials because you know, as you all said at the beginning of the video, a lot of millennials do not know how to cook and that is important for us to know how to do especially when we get into the real world and will have to prepare food that doesn’t consist of us going to a fast food restaurant. I also loved you all enjoying the food at the end of the video. I envied you for that lol. Technology wise, I think that there were certain points that deserved better focus from the camera. Perhaps this was a camera issue so it wasn’t too bad but if not, maybe better focus could have been better for the up close shots. Also I would suggest not referring to the idea of preparing food or eating food with your hands as “uncivilized” because there are plenty of cultures where eating with your hands is a part of the culture and we don’t want to offend anyone. :)

How to Be an Activist

The following video was done by us (Edressa, Dimitri, Jennelle, and Raul) to teach millennials out there on how to be an activist and ally. Nowadays, we are mostly taught things on how to manage your Facebook profile and other social media accounts, how to manage your finances, how to manage your time or payments. This year, 2015, we have started to see many major movements regarding LGBT issues, Black Lives Matter ect. Even more fascinating is that there are a plethora of issues occurring in our society and other societies around the world! Have you ever questioned yourself, how can I make a change and speak out for something I believe in? or… how can I get involved with this kind of issues and making it noticeable? The solution is to become an activist or ally! This video shows you steps and points from us as well as an exclusive look from an activist herself, that can turn you into the activist and ally you were always meant to be! Anyone can be an activist or ally, as long as you believe and stand for something! We hope you enjoy our video and tips to become the activist and ally you were always meant to be.

Check ya privilege...

Well…. Dimitri, Jennelle, Raul and I are trying to do our video on how to become an ally through activism and checking white privilege. Alot of times SOME of our white counterparts are left so confused as to how they can help with the struggle of those in the “minority” group. Well we will tell you how to just in case you were a little confused.

On the other end….

Checking your privilege, being an ally and being involved in activism doesn’t only apply to assisting a racial group but also to people who are marginalized and oppressed in this world by the systems put into place. All of us have some form of privilege that we may or may not recognize and it is important to understand that in order to “ally” correctly and be active as activists.

As of right now we don’t have much that we have already researched. I like to think that part of that is because we are already involved in activism and some of the stuff we plan on defining we know…HOWEVER we may add statistics and other information but i think we do know that we want to investigate what privilege is? What it means to “ally”? What is activism? And who are the people that are effected by all of this stuff.

Riding a Bike

So I know that this may seem slightly trivial but I don’t know how to ride a bike…

….and since I don’t know how to ride a bike. I thought that it would be good to right reviews on something that I can possibly use in the future if I ever decided that I wanted to learn how to ride a bike. 

For this video, I guess it worked because it seemed a little bit more personal and not some instructional tape that someone is tryna make money off of. (But I mean I don’t know maybe they are *shrugs*). The thing that he talks about in the beginning about balance is TRUTH! I have a hard time with balancing on the bike which is why I gave up. But I liked the way it was tailored to look more personal of a video, like the person who is in this video is probably actually somebody who was learning to ride a bike and lost like me...or maybe they are just incredibly talented at faking not knowing how to ride a bike...either way I enjoyed it some. I also think that the guy instructing the video was very informative and helpful for our sake. 

I loved this video because the people missing up reminded so much of me lol. It was informative but it was also still very personal. It was very formal in the sense that there were interviews in between so it was still very planned out as to when there would be interviews, etc. But to actually see people falling and making mistakes was still very funny for me because they weren’t afraid to learn to ride at such an “older” age and do so in front of a whole group of people. One thing that I didn’t like about this video was that there were only women in the video learning how to ride a bike. There are guys that can’t ride bikes either lol!! Which is obvious as indicated in my last video. But I say that because it would have been funnier to see more people fall and make the foolish mistakes people make tryna ride a bike.

Maybe these videos will prompt me to learn how to ride a bike eventually. I guess I’ll put that one on my bucket list.

Podcast Responses

Millennials of Color: This is a really great podcast. And something that needed to be discussed because it requires an understanding beyond the surface level of things. I agree that millennials of color have different “narratives”  than our white counterparts and that that changed the idea of “what” a millennial really is. For one the idea of these “generational groups” is to look at trends in the ways people of these generations act and operate within a particular time period, etc. And good thing on talking about microaggressions because these are words and ideas that can somehow go over our heads and if we don’t find a way to recognize it and nip it in the bud, it can snowball into a more passive-aggressive way of people who using race to pull down other groups of people. I also like the idea of discussing the way the killings Black and Brown bodies have been helping millennials of color to give way to their own voice. However, I think that having just a “voice” isn’t enough. We can sometime get complacent with the idea that social media goes SUCH a long way. However, it only goes but so far because we need people who are willing to go to action as well. My only issue would be that there seemed to be some “cutting off” of each other, but it just demonstrated such enthusiasm you all had for the topic which I appreciated so much. Important conversation to be had. Thanks for that! 

The Impact of Social Media:  I loved the music in the background in the beginning. And it seemed so professional with the structure of the whole podcast as a whole. It seemed almost like a real radio show. I do see the idea of self expression in the idea of us expressing ourselves. However, while I don’t think ALL of us are narcissistic, I think that people lose themselves in it and automatically believe that they are the people that they portray on social media even if it is not true. There are some blurred lines there which can swing either way. **I also forgot to add in my reblog that I liked the way you guys pretended (I guess from my understanding :p) to interview the people you mentioned that used platforms of social media for fame or other business ventures through clips of already existed media. I really enjoyed that and it was really creative.

Generation Hire Me:   Thank yall for bringing up the whole idea of entry level jobs!!!! I am a 5th year and am looking to get into law enforcement if law school doesn’t work out and all this entry level stuff requires us practically to be rocket scientists and we are barely out of college. I really like that you all discussed this because its so relevant to what we are going to have to deal with whether now or in a couple of years. And its nice to know that we all basically have similar concerns. Also the the topic of trades being stigmatized is so true, which can kinda put pressure on people to apply to college and university when they don’t want to do that only because its seen as “bad” by society and the jobs are super hard. I also liked the sound effects that you all added. It was dope and gave the same effect as a radio show.  And btw, the LSAT is HARDDDDD. I’m studying for it now and took two practice tests. If that isn’t an option DON’T DO IT!!!!! lolololololol.

The millennial, often described in terms that imply privilege, becomes a category that perpetuates the colorblind policies that often ignores the racialized policies and social relations that still prevail in America. Is the millennial a category capable of addressing the different realities that different demographics face or does it serve to justify a myth of laziness that once again dis-empowers the minority individual? In this podcast we explore the policies that created the racial structures that still exist, look at the way that they create a standard that the minority is always at opposition with, and finally look at the power of social media in the creation of a space and a voice for the millennial of color.

Who thought a 6 second video could make you famous? Well in our first podcast, “The Impact of Social Media,” Raul, Julie, and myself talk about probably one of the most talked about topics in our generation; millennials. In our podcast we revolve around the revolution of social media and what it has done to those who create their own material using different social media platforms like YouTube, Vine, and even Snapchat. So what can happen after making videos for these different platforms? If you get known, companies will actually reach out to you to promote their products. So people who reach up to 250,000-300,000 followers are big enough to work with. In our podcast, we interview three well known internet celebrities who made their debut by simply posting a video on social media. They probably didn’t think it’d turn out the way it did, but they’re doing better now than they were before. Our three guests are Tyler Oakley, Lilly Singh aka Superwoman, and Jerome Jarre. As Millennials who are all about to start entering the real world work force (it’s a scary thought, isn’t it?), it’s only natural that we should be looking into the availability of jobs, their longevity, and their prospect towards our planned futures. Likewise, as college students, we are expected to be making choices that will lead us where we want to go. It’s a pretty obvious plan, but is it something that is feasible for us to do? Are we even going to be able to use our college degrees in the work force? In our Podcast, Generation Jobless, we give our personal stories about how we are trying to prepare ourselves for the potentially daunting work lives we are going to lead, and insight to how we feel that it might be to pursue any job once we leave school. Featuring some valuable narratives from Peter, who gave us a bit of pointers and evidence that getting a job after college might not be the scariest notion in the world.

Music and Fashion has shown to be one of the most power things that can define a culture and a particular period in time. For us, we decided to focus on music and fashion during the period of 80s and 90s. We wanted to make it more specific to millennials who were born in the timeline that characterizes millennials of the 80s and 90s and how growing up in those periods helped influence the way that they use music and fashion and integrate the two together. We also slightly dived into the idea of social causes and social justice and how that somehow influenced or was influenced by music and fashion in the 80s and 90s all the way to now. .Lastly, for our interview, we were able to take a slightly different direction by trying to understand the way millennials from other countries understood music and fashion in their culture and also in the context of American culture. This puts things into perspective as to how music and fashion not just of the 80s and 90s but in general can impact people culturally and beyond.

Music and Fashion

Exploring music and fashion allows us to take a closer look at what that does for our creativity. Music and fashion create an expression that knows no boundaries. Music as an art form can be considered the closest thing we will get to a universal language. We share a different respect and admiration for people when we are able to understand them through various art forms and platforms. In addition to that fashion is a way to express a particular culture surrounding music or particular genre. For example hip hop music generates its own culture in fashion that can be reflective in the way that people who subscribe to that culture dresses and act. A more specific example of that was Run DMC and the Addias track suits, sneakers and kangos that they wore during their music performances and videos. Eventually, this was something that reflected in the fashion of the people at the time. 

Also certain music artists such as some of my favorite artists Janelle Monae and Jidenna showcase their fashion in their music videos to reflect their desire to go against the grain and tackle certain confinements that society puts on people creatively and artistically. In this case, fashion and music is being used as a platform to reflect their stance on certain social issues and beliefs society has about the way we dress and present ourselves to society as a whole, particularly in reference to the African-American/Black community.  There was even a time where Janelle Monae shut down a twitter troll in a dope ass way by telling him that she was “Not for Male Consumpton” after he told her to start being more sexy. Which sorta intersects with the idea of feminism along with the way we even view how women should express themselves in music and fashion. At that leads me to the song YOGA, which she performs which perfectly describes how she feels in particularly

Team Millennials!

After listening to these podcasts I feel obligated once again to stand up for my generation. It’s weird because before this class I really did not pay much attention to what generational group I belonged to but now I am 100% without a doubt shout it out #TEAMMILLENNIAL. The first podcast’s beginning millennial panic! really annoyed me. Especially in the beginning where millennials are described as trust fund hipsters who are lazy and don’t look for jobs. By the way I do know when the Pope said we “can’t be saved” but as a Christian I want to scream huh? The podcast does pose a good question about why is this group of people being scapegoated. Why are we being punished because some of our parents have WORKED HARD to provide for us. By the way most of the millennials I know work extremely hard supporting themselves and contributing to the family. I think that a very small minority of millennials are able to not work and cherry pick whatever job want. Most of us realize that you must work hard in order to enjoy a life of comfort.

The second podcast  The Millennials’ Are Here, The Millennials’ Are Here! tried to focus on the skills of a millennials. According to them even though we have helicopter parents and think life ends at 30 (yeah okay where do they get this information from HBO’s GIRLS?)  This podcast made me like ridiculously angry. It was so condescending and comical. Their suggests read like a Dr. Seuss book for millennials. They disguise the fact that they do not think millennials are capable of doing anything by suggesting shadowing and mentoring. For a cruel minute I honestly thought this was some sort of satire because it is so unbelievably. They are basically saying millennials have the mindset as a child so treat them as such. Hold their hand through lala land and spoon feed them everything. At the end of this podcast I just wanted to clap and say very good Johnny you dressed yourself all by yourself today. Good for you! I mean what is this crap.

The mullercast podcast was interesting even though it took entirely too long to jump into the actually topic. I mean come on everyone knows that millennials only have a 10 second attention span. I’m kidding but it was nice to hear Case Kenny’s account on drive and how he left his job to start something he is actually passionate about. I think he is right. He said, “when it is about harnessing and leveraging as many experiences as you can until you reach enlightenment.” I think that he also makes a valid point about the way millennials go about getting employment. There are so many ways to success in this day and age. I think that technology in particular makes the world our oyster. We have the ability to create start ups or gain success without putting up much capital and with very little overhead. This allows us to career hop more because we have a much better chance of landing on our feet than our predecessors.

Overall the podcast were interesting but the Baby Boomers, Gen X and the Great generation better watch out because #TeamMillennial is running full speed ahead and we have no intention of stopping!!

I actually thought that first and last podcast was more in favor for the way millennials operate. According to them they were just providing numbers and data from some study that was done at USC, I believe that was supposed to have all the answers about our job habits. But it seemed really insulting though (the study). The second one was flat right disrespectful and degrading to us making it seems that our parents caring for us and trying not to make the mistakes they made almost as a crime. Overall, I agree with a lot that you mentioned here.

“2015 Year of Pursuit”

After listening to “Millennial Culture and the Experience Driven Life” by The Muller Cast,  I noticed it kind of related to the previous podcast where they both touch up on the topic of millennials in the workforce. By the year 2020, 1 in 3 adults will be a millennial and 75% of the workforce will be a millennial in the year 2025. This generation is the most diverse in American history. Millennials can be identified as 18-34 year olds. We supposedly generalize groups around our mindset. This generation is distrusting, demanding and inpatient. But on the flip side, our experience is very unique. We were around at the beginning of new innovations where the world was changing. We experienced when internet came about all the way to smart phones being made. With world existing institutions being in place for so many year, they haven’t been updated. The last podcast and this podcast but address the same issue as to how millennials are the “Facebook generation.” When someone sees a post on Facebook, they accept it and turn that into their view. It is now a way of education yourself and influencing others. Years ago, before smart phones and internet was around, to be well educated, you had to look for it yourself. People who went on walks through the park experienced it first hand, but now this so called “Facebook generation” just look things up and “experience” it through what they see on a screen. 

Some people aren’t happy with the job they are in so they job hop in hope of finding a better job with better compensation. They want to go where they can learn and get something out of their job. You should be the only person who tells you what you want and shouldn’t hesitate because people might look down at you. You want to do what you think is best because you wouldn’t want to be working for a company that you’re miserable at. 

When they talked about our generation having a unique experience, I would agree. We were the generation of some of the greatest innovations that we still use till this day, and we have seen some things that people born in the next generation won’t be able to see again. In terms of us in the workforce, we are sometimes not happy in the job that we currently possess. This might be a result because we simply aren’t happy in our job or because they aren’t paying enough. We wouldn’t want to keep job hopping so we can eventually be an employee for years and gain all the knowledge you can. Nobody but yourself should tell you where to work because at the end of the day, you’re the one waking up and going into work. If you aren’t happy, why would you want to keep going to that job? To wrap all this up, all three podcast tied into the same theme of millennials. They kind of all had negative things to say about this generation, but also had good things on the flip side. Not everyone fits those stereotypes and people should have a wider mindset when it comes to thinking about who millennials really are.

It's unfortunate that from those podcast, specifically the second one (which I HATED) doesn't really see that we have a unique experience. I think partly because the 90s millennials were born at a unique time where many things in society were still intact where we were able to get the perspective of things of those before is but also at a time where we also were presented with so much new technology before us. I think that puts us at an interesting place to see things in a perspective that probably hasn't been seen before. However, I think a lot of people think we are just selfish, spoiled and lazy. Which can be far from the truth. I think right now in our generation we can be seen as a combo of a couple of generations before us, for our involvement in social movements and also (in my opinion) our work ethic.

Millennial Mania

This week I listened to three podcasts,“Millennial Panic!” (The Cracked Podcast), “The Millennials Are Here!” (Advisorpod) and “Millennial Culture and the Experience Driven Life” (The MullerCast). Although each podcast was about the Millennials they all offered different perspectives and insights of what this generation is about. 

The Cracked Podcast was by far the most interesting and educational out of the three. Host Jack O’Brien talked about the notorious stereotype that Millennials are often branded with by the media and older generations. David Pargin, executive writer at Cracked, explained how the media portrays GenMe as “aimless, entitled, young people who refuse to get a job”. From there he went on to explain the rapid change in economy, productivity and technology and how the old institutions haven’t adapted to these changes. However, millennials have learned to live in this new “Jeffersonian” world where its not necessary for everyone to do menial labor and work Monday through Friday from 9 to 5. We have the opportunity to really find a career we love and take our time doing it. 

“The Millennials Are Here!” was my least favorite of the podcasts. Business advisors Kirk Hulett and Chris Kirby give tips to help companies attract millennial employees. They started off by describing this generation as all the negative stereotypes that O’Brien addressed in the Cracked Podcast. The tone of the 9 minute clip was very condescending towards millennials and made it seem as if they should be catered to and coddled by their employers. I think the only point I agreed with is the implementation of mentorship programs within companies. I think relationships between millennial employees and their older more experienced co-workers is important in erasing the tension and misunderstanding between generations. 

The third podcast by the Mullercast featured millennial entrepreneur and co-founder of PRSUIT.com, Case Kenny. He offered his own perspective as millennial in the workforce and the journey to his most current project. He briefly talked about how he disagreed with the use of millennial as a marketing label. He also vented his frustration with this generation and they’re tendency to take-in information passively through social media. A frustration I agreed with and am guilty of committing myself. Kenny also holds a skepticism towards the old work institutions and ideals. Much of what he expressed was inline with O’Brien and Pargin discussed. 

My biggest dissatisfaction with these podcasts was the lack of diversity. All the creators of these podcasts were first-world, middle-class (or higher), Caucasian men. While I really appreciated all the insight provided, it came from a similar perspectives. Kenny talked about how varied the mindsets within this generation are and and I would like to hear more about them.

I love that you mentioned the idea of diversity when it comes to the ideas presented about what a millennial is what defines that. The last podcast you mentioned that talked with the millennial entrepreneur where he actually mentions the idea that the definition of a millennial is only framed to cater to one mindset or type of person when in actuality there are so many different people with different mindsets and realities to make up what a millennial is. Mentioning that is important bc it shows that we all don't think we think the same so why is everyone else categorizing us as if we do. But the second podcast particularly the second one (which I didn't like much either) makes it seem that millennials are all the same person with the same realities and mindsets.

Millennial Obessession

Apparently, millennials are spoiled & we don’t try to push ourselves and that can be seen in the way we would be okay with being unemployed than being at a job thatwe would hate. That says more to me about our ability to stand by our ideas and our own decisions. 

STOP GENERALIZING US!!!

People who are not millennials want us to live in a society that no longer exists anymore. Its a constant battle. One of the men in the “Millennial Panic” podcast mentions that the whole purpose (usually) for generations before to do things as they do is so the next generation doesn’t have to struggle the way they did, which I agree with because you can’t want to help make us comfortable then bash us for being comfortable with the living we have. It can’t be both ways. Its frustrating to have the generations before us work hard to create things or advantages for us to take in but it is almost as if they don’t want us to be too happy while we enjoy them. 

Also the same guy also mentioned that since millennials are growing up in a very high tech society we are less likely to feed into the notion that we are being paid to work and assist in jobs that pay us little to nothing especially if we have a machine doing most of the work for us (WHICH I AGREE WITH)...so why work a job that will not stimulate or challange us?

The second podcast disgusted me because it sounded more like a self help manual to businesss and such basically on how to deal with people of our generation as if we are so difficult to deal with. *rolls eyes*

One of the cohosts even said that the advantage of getting older is “breaking the spirits of millennials”. Sheesh. Why so harsh? Apparently we are the “I want it now” generation. When in my opinion from people I encounter in my generation everyone has the “I Want It Now” but more so in the way that we refuse to settle for less than we deserve. Which goes back to what I mentioned earlier about what one of the guys in the Millennial Panic podcast pointed out. We aren’t spoiled, we just refuse to tolerate less than what we know can challange us.

I loved this quote from the last podcast that the guest said in referene to what a millennial is, “People tend to generalize to create these collective groups so that they can create content around a mindset”.  And this here I agree with. Everything is so generalized with reference to the way that the world sees us. Which is so unfair because when its convinent for older generations they can find a way to see how we are doing things wrong. This though, I am sure will be how the millennials see the generations after us. Thats just how things go. However, you cant make unfair generatizations that completely diminish our ability to function and behave like adults. As I mentioned earlier, society changes and as that happens we have to adapt to the time and the experiences that are in front of us cannot and should not be judged off of that. Lastly, the guest on this last podcast also mentions that due to all the different mindsets not just in the millennial generation but other ones before us as well, we can generalize because everyone has their own way and set standard when it comes to living.

When will they stop generalizing us an actually acknowledge or appreciate the stuff we do “right”.

Health thru. the Ages

Greatest Generation (experienced the Great Depression and WWII)

-Although during the great depression a lack of food and resources hurt the american people of the top causes of death suicide was the only one to increase especially as unemployment increased. 

-The aftermath of World War II brought along changes in public policy  and health like medicare but this generation had to live with toxic reminisces of the war. Not only did the war cause death in itself survivors suffered from cold injuries, radiation, and mental health issues.

Baby Boomers (1946-64)

- After WWII there was increase in population yearly until that died off in 1964. Wealthy, most active and physically fit of that time. Were expected to live longer lives and not healthier. Widespread obesity among them which could’ve led to an epidemic that would’ve increased aging. 

-Rates of Alzheimers Disease drastically increased and as the number of baby boomers get older the more develop the disease to levels that have not been seen before.  And 80% of people between 50 and 90 years old are sexually active but fewer are practicing safe sex. And 14% have Hep. C.

Generation Xers (1965 and 1980)

- There was more awareness towards sexual health during this generation. Partly due to the sudden change in tradition and the way of going about monogamy. Gen Xers were more likely to experiment with more sexual partners during this period before settling down and starting a family.

- The change in tradition along with the lack of understanding and education on STDs and STIs plays a part in explaining why over the years they became more tamed of going about choosing sexual partners in later generations.

Millennials (early 1980′s-1999)

- The greatest health problems regarding this generation is within with mental and physical health.

-This generation is prone to higher stress levels then previous generations because of certain expectations their parents have on them. Out of all generations, Millennials are least likely to know how to manage their stress, thus increasing mental health problems. The way that this generations copes with stress is through music, video games, and the internet. 

-Regarding their physical health, they are less likely do some activity compared to previous generations due to much time spent in front of a computer or tv. These practices has contributed to the rise of child obesity. 

-What is different about this generation is that they are more curious on where their food comes from. This generation is more likely to buy more organic products rather than focusing on brand/labels.
