Evaluation of Term 1 and 2 studies
For the first term I learned new techniques and researched new products that I would use to demonstrate these techniques.
Old age makeup is something I am more confident with because I have a better understanding of the structure I need to create and know which colours are better suited for highlighting and shading.
I feel much more confident with products now since I have discovered how to colour match effectively and how to contrast colours for better effect. I have more knowledge of skin tones and which colours work better on darker and lighter skins. From learning this I have gained confidence in working on lighter skin tones.
In the second term I was more confident doing my own work; it wasn’t easy but I felt comfortable researching and making developments to my existing face charts and make up designs because I felt more inspired and self-assured that my work was progressively developing as I was creating work that I loved.
Theory work during the first term was difficult for me because I was hesitant about the ideas I had and it was difficult for the ideas and thought processes to be linked together. During the second term I understood more of what the theory work was about and this improved my organisation as I was prioritising my research and putting effort into finding out about the upcoming topics like ballet; I was far more prepared because it wasn’t something completely new and I knew where to find my information.
My makeup development during the second term improved vastly with my new found confidence and preparation. I knew which products I was supposed to use, which brushes would be appropriate and how to prepare my model. I became more organised with my work station and I was more conscientious with my timing; I was aware of the timings I had to allow for my makeup application to maximise and manage my available lesson time.
Facial hair was the easiest lesson that I had because it was easy to do the beard and moustache and was fun because we had to apply them on each other and we were all girls, so that was a great lesson. I enjoyed this lesson because I learnt new techniques and worked with crepe hair, this was something I hadn’t done before so it was a new exciting experience. If I were to do it again, I would change the shape and the application precision because the two sides aren’t even. I would also add more hair to the chin area because the overall look was not quite as realistic as I’d have liked. I will consider letting the spirit gum dry out a bit more before applying the hair next time because the fake hair would adhere to the skin a bit better. I enjoyed working with my model because I was confident working on her and I felt the facial hair I applied complimented her face shape. I was happy with my final result despite the changes I might make next time.
The first year was very hard for me because everything was new, the modules were very different from the modules I did on Level 3. I had help from the Learning support department to help me understand what I had to do. The writing of the assignments has been the most challenging part of the course. I have difficulties with spelling because of my dyslexia so I have needed support and extra time to complete work which had helped me. I also found learning the techniques for the make-up difficult because I didn’t know much about the products I was using. The Blog was also new for me. I had never done a blog before so I had to do a lot of research about the designers, the make-up and the hair and fashion designers. The only lesson that I found very difficult was Theatrical Make-up because I had to do a lot of research and writing before actually doing the make-up.
I feel I am very confident with hair styling, washing and blow drying because this is something I have been doing for nearly 3 years. I also now feel that my knowledge of make-up skills has improved a lot; my technique has got better and my timing skills have really improved. I am quite good at learning for myself and finding out what I have to do and I’m more confident know about going into shops and asking about products, makeup and what is new and what is on trend.
I feel my team work skills are excellent and I love working in a team because I am a good listener and I enjoy hearing other people’s ideas. I feel we learn from each other when we work in a team. I also enjoyed doing body painting because it was something I had done when I did Level 3 so I could develop my knowledge and the teacher was very helpful with developing my skills.
With Current Trends, it was difficult at the beginning to research and find the information, but now I feel confident with this and I enjoy finding out about current trends because it’s about everything I love doing; hair, makeup and fashion. The teacher for Current Trends was also very helpful and made the class interesting; she was an inspiration to me.
If I had to rate myself and the progress I have made, I would give myself 8/10 because I feel I have improved. It hasn’t been easy but I have gained a lot of confidence and I feel happy and know what I need to do to achieve a high standard.
