Grieving A Living Soul

You stood by and did nothing. The words bubbled up like acid in her mind and throat as she looked at the screen of her former teacher.

Fire spilled across her psyche, burning her with a reminder of that night. The feeling of it all, the panic, the fear, the sorrow, the anger. He was hurt and she was denied the right to see him. He was hurt and she had to let him go off to hack doctors who would not even try to reverse the damage.

“My love, how many times have I told you about having your little fantasies in front of my displays? It gets expensive to repair the screens.”

It was his voice that snapped her out of it, just enough to see she’d fractured the screen with her fist. She didn’t care about the blood dripping down it, or the damage she’d done; she just cared about her plan. It was simple: find Granville at her weakest like she’d found him, prevent those who cared from getting to her, and make sure she never got the right treatment. Eleanor would do to her what she’d done to him, and she would make sure it hurt.

“Eleanor.”

A hand fell on her shoulder, and she flinched. His cold stare is what she noticed first – the boy I knew is dead – and she managed a quiet, “I know, I’m sorry.” She didn’t mean it, not really anyway.

“Try again.” The words came out like a command, as he softly squeezed her arm.

“I’m sorry.” The apology felt poisonous, she shouldn’t be apologizing for this, she should be apologizing for having not brained their old professor yet.

“If anyone else knew how much anger hid behind that smile…”

His words acted as a hesitant balm, calming her. “I know, and I know you want me to work on it.”

“You’re quite wrong there, I’d rather you use it.”

There it was: use it, benefit from it; a hint of the new man, the one who’d taken over the body of her love. Her mind took her back again, a different flood of memories. The memories of times where lips came close, where smiles were shared, hands clasped within each other over some little experiment.

He sighed, “You’re thinking about it again, aren’t you?”

She didn’t answer him, turning her attention to the fragments of glass stuck within her flesh. “You need to stop picking at that, love. Your fingers aren’t suited for the removal of such things.” He pushed her plucking hand away with surprising gentleness, and he observed her closely.

“With me now,” he murmured, his voice half commanding, half asking as he took her down the halls; turning into a separate room. “Take a seat.” She would have protested, had he not pushed her down into the chair.

“You need the glass removed, do not make this more complicated than it needs to be.” An eerie purple glow cast over her, and she turned away, not wanting to look upon the injury. “You do know you can look at it, it will not blind you.”

“I’d rather not, and you know why.”

“I never said I didn’t, simply that your obsession with living in the past is unnecessary. After all, this is who I am now.” He paused, his gaze becoming more calculating, “And if you still claim to love me, I’d rather see you accept it.”

Those words hurt, but she wouldn’t show it. It hurt how he just accepted this, as if the person he was never existed. She held out her hand, waiting for the familiar pain of the cleansing of her injury.

He may have spoken to her as he carefully removed the shards, but she didn’t notice. Her mind was drowning itself in memories again, ones that made her smile, ones that made her cry. When she felt the soft bandages however, her mind refocused.

“So, you came back from there,” Obake’s voice was soft, almost sorrowful, “You hid from me again; in those memories.”

She was about to apologize before he gently hugged her, his fingers carding through her peppered ginger hair. “I understand how important your plan is to you, I really, really do Ellie. But you can’t go day to day like this, you’re losing yourself. It’s disturbing.”

The next words she spoke came out, unbidden.

“What right have you got to say about me losing myself?”

I need to ramble.

I need to ramble about him:

Obake. (aka Bob Aken)

First off, what does "obake" mean?

He is A Thing That Has Changed.

And he IS in a sense a Ghost Of A Deceased Human.

The accident that made him who he is, in a way "killed" Bob Aken; and in result gave birth to Obake.

He is the thing that changed, blinded by ambition and led on without limits he was changed.

He was thought dead by everyone who knew him as Bob.

He is a metaphorical GHOST.

And the fact that this name he chose, the new self he chose was one that represented that change and that "death" means so much to me.

He knows he is changed, and he chooses to wear that as a mark upon himself. He chooses to openly admit he is a ghost of himself.

Very few people who undergo a change like that do.

And I respect that he embraces the fact that he was changed instead of avoiding the truth like many people do.

I could also ramble about the preternatural thing. But I am not going to do that just yet.
