Starflights never had a worse headache.
The desert is suffocatingly dry, and his heart pounds in the back of his skull and all the way to the tips of his ears. He thought living on a volcano for all of his life would prepare him for this. He was very, very wrong.
"Here," says the small dragon, her harmless tail tapping against his arm as she settles in front of them with two bowls of water, "I can't promise it'll help, but it's better than nothing."
"I knew you'd bring these," Fatespeaker beams, nudging him with her elbow, see Starflight? Patience."
He hums an agreement, and nods to the gold dragon, murmuring a thank you before gingerly picking up his bowl, careful not to spill.
"Drink slow," she tells him, talons fiddling with her copper arm band, "I might not be able to get more."
He drinks slow. It's icy relief, and he barely manages to stop himself from drinking it all right then and there.
The gold dragon smiles as he puts his bowl down. Fatespeaker sets hers down too.
"Better?"
"Much," Starflight answers, "thank you."
"How did it taste?"
"Cold," Fatespeaker answers, and Starflight nods in agreement, "it scared me."
"I was hoping it would," the gold dragon beams, "well- taste cold, that is. Not scare you."
so in the alternate prophecy au:
-clay is the bigwings and agrees to go with starflight when he needs him
-tsunami is trans and steps up to be in the prophecy cause in her eyes she’s the only one who will be able to do it right and doesn’t care what anybody else says
-glory grew up in the rainforest and found the tunnels while exploring with kinkajou and is now very worried for her best friend as well as orchid and the other disappeared rainwings and will do anything to get them back, even if it means being a part of some weird nightwing’s prophecy
-starflight was hatched under 3 moons because of mastermind’s experiments and has seen the so called ‘prophecy dragonets’ first hand and decided that he better take matters into his own hands or this prophecy isn’t going to end well for any of the tribes
-but sunny? i’ve got no idea. she’s in the desert. she’s half nightwing and was hatched under three moons. does she have nightwing powers? does she look different? i’m sure she acts different. is thorn in charge of the scorpion den? does starflight fall in love with her?
basically today is going to be me slowly figuring out what to do with sunny in this au feel free to drop by my inbox if you wanna help me toss ideas around!
anybody ever think about the alternate prophecy au
"All clear over here," comes a voice from the trees- one that startles Starflight nearly out of his scales.
A dragonet comes into view, one he's only seen in visions.
"Crane," he gapes. "You're supposed to be dead."
More doodles from last year before I threw them out. More doodles coming soon
looking back at posts on this blog is equal parts fun and embarrassing . i was really out here posting every thought in my brain huh
Tsunami remains frozen on the ground as they bring him in.
He’s terrifying, bloodshot eyes and scars all up and down his body.
“Gill of the SeaWings!” Vermillion announces.
Starflight anchors on Tsunami’s mind.
She stares up at the SeaWing with wide eyes. In her head, memories wash over her, of this dragon smiling and holding her as if she’s the most precious thing in the world.
“I’m a girl now.” She says, climbing over his tail.
“Oh?” Gill smiles down at her, keeping his tail still for her, “Is that so?”
Tsunami nods, boosting herself up, “You have to call me Tsunami now and if you don’t I’ll bite you.”
Gill laughs brightly and wraps her up in his wings, “Sounds good, princess. Does your mother know that she has another challenger for the throne?”
Tsunami shakes herself out of the memory. And looks to Starflight, a desperate look in her eye.
That’s her Father, Starflight realizes, in horror, Tsunami has to kill her Father.
The future is a strange thing.
Starflight watches the spilled puddle of ink spread across the floor, inching towards his tail and seeping into crevasses. Black ink drips from his talons, as if his scales are melting off, and he takes a deep breath.
Inside his mind, a million timelines ripple. Some fade from existence, others become brighter. Dropping the inkwell was like skipping a stone over a lake of possibilities- with each ripple comes a new future, a new timeline for him to worry about and scribble down.
It’s incredible how one small action can change the future so drastically, Starflight thinks to himself, not for the first time, as he bends to retrieve the inkwell. He braces himself against the table, his wings helping him balance on the way down.
He straightens again, placing the inkwell gently next to his scroll, I didn’t ruin this scroll, at least. If I did I’d have to start over.
Well. He might have to start over anyway, considering what he’s just done to the timelines. He flicks as much ink as he can off his talons and leans over to begin writing again.
The oldest RainWing will die in a week by starving to death. The littlest one will need a band for her snout- her venom control has gotten better. Deathbringer will be back in three days-
Pain shoots through his head- he brings one talon up to press against his forehead. Ink drips down his arm.
“Ow,” he breathes.
Someone with extremely annoyed thoughts is coming up the tunnel- it must be Morrowseer, he’s always upset about something- and there’s Mastermind, talking animatedly about research, plans, and-
“-for him to go to the rainforest, next time. He hasn’t gone back since he hatched- I think some sunlight and fruit would be good for him.”
Starflight looks up as they enter the room. They’re talking about him.
Morrowseer says nothing as Mastermind continues to ramble. Starflight draws his wings in closer and tries to drown Morrowseer’s thoughts with the lake in his head. It doesn’t work very well.
"Dragonet,” Morrowseer says suddenly, making Starflight flinch even though he’s been looking straight at Morrowseer for an entire minute, “What do you know about the prophecy?”
“Prophecy?” Starflight repeats, scrambling to think of what prophecy Morrowseer could possibly- oh. “About the end of the war?”
Morrowseer keeps his face neutral. The annoyed thoughts lessen just a bit at that. He nods.
“Well, it ah-” he tries to remember. The false prophecy never seemed important enough to remember, considering the very real, (and very possible), futures parading around in his head. Luckily for him, Mastermind has it at the forefront of his mind, probably not on purpose, “It’s going to come to pass soon, isn’t it?”
Morrowseer’s thoughts twist towards annoyed again. Whoops.
“Two years,” Mastermind corrects.
Starflight twists his talons together.
“Five dragonets born on the brightest night,” he tries again, “A MudWing, a SeaWing, a SkyWing, a SandWing and a NightWing. They’re going to pick a queen and bring an end to the war, twenty years after it began, which is two years from now.”
Never mind that he’s the only NightWing dragonet hatched on the brightest night and definitely not cut out for some big, heroic destiny, but clearly Morrowseer doesn’t care about that because-
"We’ve found some dragonets fit for the prophecy,” Morrowseer says, “And it’s your job to keep an eye on them.”
Turns out the mass of vines is not solid.
Starflight falls through the canopy with a yelp, wings sprawled as he plummets, landing with a splash into the water below.
It takes him a moment to right himself, head shooting above the surface of the water. He takes a deep breath, his voice too loud as it echoes back at him, and a sudden rush of voices come to his head.
Ah, Starflight ducks his head, away from all the SeaWing eyes that have just turned to him, and quickly imagines rain, rain, rain, drowning out all of their thoughts before they can overwhelm him.
So I was right. The Summer Palace is here.
For some reason he isn’t as thrilled about that fact as he thought he would be.
“Little dragon?” Jambu’s voice echoes much too loudly through the palace, “You alright down there?”
Starflight looks up. Jambu and Glory poke their heads through the hole he made in the canopy.
“Alright,” He calls back. The SeaWings are still staring at him. He glances around to all of them again, feeling like a strange black blob in the middle of all the green and blue.
“Uhm,” his voice feels too loud, even though he’s speaking at a normal volume, “I’m-”
“You!”
Starflight whirls around. For a moment the voices are back, crowding in his mind for a split second, and he flings up his wings to block the wave of water that comes crashing over his head. With it, the voices go away again.
He shakes water off his wings and brings them back to his sides, coming face-to-face with a blue SeaWing dragonet that looks to be about his age.
She sizes him up with sharp green eyes and he suddenly feels very, very small. A peek into her mind shows she’s ready to claw him.
“Who are you?” she demand, lashing her tail, “State your business!”
Starflight doesn’t know what to say. This is a dangerous dragon, he can tell by her mind.
But you don’t know if this dragon is actually a she, he realizes, as the minds around him leak through the rain. The dragons in here seem very conflicted on what pronouns to use for this dragonet.
Two splashes behind him, and the new dragonet glares over his shoulder. The rain lets up a little. Glory and Jambu have landed behind him.
“Hello, little one,” Jambu says pleasantly, his scales still a shocking bright pink, “This is a cool place!”
The SeaWing narrows her eyes at him, then at Glory, whose scales are a sky blue with bits of orange and annoyed green at the edges of her wings and tail. Jealousy flashes through the SeaWing’s mind before her green eyes snap back to Starflight.
“What is a NightWing doing here?” She spits the word NightWing as if it’s a rotten fish.
Starflight looks to the timelines. Is the truth the best option here?
Looks like the odds are about 50/50, he decides after a moment, May as well just tell the truth.
“I’m here to fulfill a prophecy,” he tells her, “May I speak with Queen Coral?”
The future is a strange thing.
Starflight watches the spilled puddle of ink spread across the floor, inching towards his tail and seeping into crevasses. Black ink drips from his talons, as if his scales are melting off, and he takes a deep breath.

“Watch out!”
Starflight yelps when a dragon slams into him, knocking both of them out of the air.
A burst of flame singes his wingtips- he closes them quickly and pulls his tail closer. The dragon holding him got hit with more flames than he did- but all they do is shudder and keep flying.
Amber eyes meet his, soft and concerned-
“Are you alright?”
Three moons, this dragon has pretty eyes. Starflight thinks. He peeks into this dragons mind. All his thoughts are loud and worried. He doesn’t seem to care at all about Starflight being a NightWing.
“How did you do that?” Starflight asks, “You just- the fire-”
The MudWing smiles at him, “I’m just built that way.”
“You are a peculiar little dragon,” Jambu tells him.
Starflight brings his wings closer.
“You can’t change your scales?” Liana asks.
Starflight shakes his head. He’s not sure he can speak, with all the new thoughts parading around in his head. Happy RainWings are much harder to block out than all the NightWings on the island.
Glory is calm. He anchors onto her thoughts and tries to wash out his mind with rain.
“I like your little silver bits,” Jambu says, grinning, as a few of the dragons behind him make their scales black and starry, “I’ll have to try something like that.”
Starflight just nods.
Jambu doesn’t mind the lack of an answer, “So what brings you to the rainforest?
Starflight freezes. He didn’t mean to come–he isn’t supposed to be here at all.
How will they react?
They won’t, he realizes, glancing at the futures, The only colors I can see are curious. There’s no anger or sadness, just curious and confused.
“I’m just passing through.”
Shades of pink and purple-orange ripple through the crowd of RainWings. There’s no further questioning or demands, just smiles and nods.
“I see!” Jambu says, “Well, glad to have you! Feel free to wander around, just be careful of sleeping dragons. It’s almost sun time.”
Starflight’s train of thought comes to an abrupt halt.
“Sun time?”
Starflight collides with another dragon in the air just outside the sand kingdom tunnel and ends up sprawled on the rainforest floor, which of course has him panicking a moment later.
Did Father notice I’m missing and send Strongwings after me? Was that a RainWing? Why would anyone other than a NightWing be out here-
“Starflight?”
He knows that voice.
“Deathbringer!” Starflight yelps, turning over quickly to find Deathbringer standing over him, “Don’t kill anyone! Not Blaze! I’m goi-!”
“Shh…” Deathbringer hushes him, flicking his wings open and casting a glance up to the other tunnel in the tree, “Not here, bud.”
“But-”
Deathbringer looks back at him with that smile of his- the one that says Starflight should read his mind.
“You didn’t-”
“Hush, little dragon,” Deathbringer hushes him again. His eyes turn amused, even as he glances back at the tunnel again, “I’ll lose my job if we talk about it here-”
“You won’t,” Starflight scans the trees for minds, “Nobody is in the tunnel. The only dragons here are us and Glory.”
Deathbringer tilts his head. “Glory?”

Tsunami does not take him to Queen Coral.
In fact, for about ten minutes, the entire Summer Palace is dead silent. Dragons think, not at him, but rather loudly.
A prophecy? What kind of prophecy?
The dragonet prophecy?
Is he the Wings of Night?
Eventually a dragon swoops down from the pavilion with a friendly sort of look on his face and tells Starflight to come with him.
