poems 4 lovers, strangers, and everything in between
1. you had walked me to my car on a cold april night. you weren’t wearing a jacket and i could tell you were cold but you didn’t want to leave first. i think somewhere in the universe, we’re still in that parking lot. you had held my hand tightly that summer, but i don’t think anyone else has ever held it with that much care.
2. we had gotten high in your car and wore our best to some chain restaurant. we had laughed so hard over $12 pasta. i don’t even remember what had been so funny, but i do remember thinking that i never wanted to stop making you laugh. i fell asleep on the drive back. i loved every second of that day because you were there with me. thank you for driving me home.
3. it was a warm september and we were day drunk, wandering through some little town. you told me you’d let me drive your car one day and i told you about the best taco place in the world and how’d we go next time. i think somewhere along the way, we got lost in translation. im sorry i couldn’t be a lover, but i never thought we’d stop being friends. i hope you get the mint lemonade if you ever do go, it was my favorite.
4. we fell asleep on the phone that night. swapping ghost stories in hushed whispers. it was everything a first love is. sweet and innocent and chaotic and tragic. we were never going to get married but it was nice playing house; even if it was just for a summer. every love since has been a dark red sea that pulls you to the bottom but sometimes i look back and miss the shallow, pink creek that was ours.
5. we took turns smoking out of your window on a cold december night. i knew this was never going to end well but there’s beauty in holding on to hope. this is the only memory i kept that isn’t tainted. i don’t have any more to say.
6. you had lit my cigarette and we talked about god, the universe and everything in between. we had walked all through the city until the buildings were blue with the first glimpse of sunlight. we never saw each other again after that night. i no longer smoke but your lighter rests safely in my collection.
i understand why old people sit outside just to sit outside
we aren’t doing enough arts and crafts in this world I’m telling you
