The next morning, after numerous hugs and goodbyes, we each went our separate ways. No doubt the memories made in New Zealand will continue to flourish in our minds, and our love for this paradise of a country forever hold a place in our hearts. Thank you to all our families, friends, fellow hikers, Kiwis and readers for the continual support along our journey. This experience was definitely enhanced because of you all. As always, cheers and happy trails!
12/12/13 - 4/20/14
These guys. Together we walked the length of New Zealand, 3,050 kilometers, in four months and eight days. I could not be more proud of our first official thru-hike. Congratulations my best friends, let’s start hitching!
On 4/20/14, Easter Sunday, we finished the Te Araroa. I know now is the time for deep reflections, inspirational quotes, tales of wisdom, etc gained along the trail, and those may come, but for now we celebrate. We loitered the Bluff sign drinking our champagne and beers for several hours relishing in our glory. Goal accomplished!
4/20/14 - 30k Invercargill to Bluff. This is it. Can you believe it? The grand finale. We left Invercargill and arrived at Bluff in the early afternoon. On the walk to the beach I tried to reflect on what I was feeling at the time. Excited? Nervous? Sad? Relieved? Elated? All the above. It seemed as if it all came to an end so fast. We were out of trail and I don't know if I was ready. Of course we were ready to finish our thruhike of the country, many conversations were held regarding the sacrifices made due to our commitment to one continual, unbroken path from Cape Reinga to Bluff. But you become addicted to trail life. Waking up every morning in a different place, carrying everything you needed to survive, walking all day knowing just around the corner is another jaw-dropping view, being away from society's distractions, the list goes on. For me at least, this is what I am never ready to finish. With the expectations this would be memorable moment in each of our lives we prepared the best we could - by bringing multiple bottles of champagne and brews.
4/18/14 - 40k 4/19/14 - 37k Yes, I know. We're reaching for content here. On 4/18 we walked from Nightcaps to the small town of Thornbury. We arrived at Thornbury on Good Friday with the entire "town" closed up. Because it was just a little after 4pm Jeb and I decided to go on a little adventure to a small beach town we'd heard good things about. We hitched out and were in Riverton by 5pm. I think being near the beach made the fact we were finishing in two days all the more real. We celebrated with a pitcher or two and a lovely big breakfast (including a molten chocolate brownie) at the cutest cafe the next morning. On 4/19/13 we finished our road walk to Invercargill, a larger town only 30k away from Bluff. (30k!) Amazingly enough, we ran into two of our friends, Dylan and Mary, on the walk in (they were riding in a car like normal folks) and told them to meet us in town for the big day tomorrow. The six of us rented a room at a holiday park on the edge of town and stuffed our faces with pizza and beer in preparation for the grand finale.
4/17/14 - 50k Today we woke up to similar weather as experienced in the past five days - cold and wet. We decided to take a bail trail to a local road where Robby, Jeb and I nailed out a grueling 50 kilometers. We met back up with Britt in the small town of Nightcaps where we were once again blessed with some local Kiwi hospitality. A couple we met at a pub invited us into their home for our first night of warm and dry sleep in almost a week. The perfect reward for a big day.
4/16/14 - 17k Today was rough. Our plan was to move over 30k, but the Takitimu Range had other plans. We woke up to a chilly rain that prevailed all day making our visibility low and our pace even lower. We arrived at our halfway point, Apirima Hut a little after noon, and after much discussion decided to stay the rest of the day and finish the track tomorrow. Pictured above is breakfast the next morning and Jeb taking advantage of our half day off.
4/15/14 - Who needs herding dogs when you've got three hikers to help the herd change paddocks?
4/15/14 - 52k That's right, 52k of lovely road walking to Princhester Hut. Maybe that's why this picture herding sheep is our solo one for the day.
4/14/14 - Not the most riveting video, I know. But this is a good example of our relationship with tussock. The bunches of tall grass make a usually easy terrain extremely slow going due to the lack of visibility to see where you are stepping (often enough there are small streams winding through the fields) making tussock well, suck. Jeb thought it would be funny to grab a video of me exchanging a few choice words with the testy grass.
4/14/14 - 34k We woke up to a rainy, cold day and made our way past Mavora Lake as the weather cleared to end the camping by South Mavora Lake.
4/14/14 - We love trail hazards. It brings out the inner Dutch from Predator in us all.
4/13/14 - Amy & Jeb, 34k - Britt & Robby, 10k Jeb and I were up bright and early hoping to catching a ride all the way to the start of the track. Unfortunately, we made it almost all the way, but ended up walking an extra 10k plus the 24k to meet up with Britt and Robby at Taipo Hut.
4/12/14 - 11k, Robby and Britt Leaving Queentown was slightly more difficult than we thought, for Jeb and myself. For practicability purposes, the four of us split in half when hitching. Even though we both hit the edge of town with our thumbs out around noon, Britt and Robby got lucky with a ride all the way to our destination, the start of the Greenstone Track, while Jeb and I got a total of seven rides inching us halfway where we finally called it a night. Robby and Britt then hiked 11k to the first hut and Jeb and I hit a local pub for some well deserved brews.
4/11/14 - 22k Today we left Arrowtown for Queenstown. Once in Queenstown the boys and I met back up with Britt at none other than Fergburger, a very popular craft burger joint. At the very north of the north island we began hearing stories of this infamous American classic. Honestly? Yes, the burgers were huuuge, but we all agreed slightly overrated. Nonetheless, we were supremely satisfied. The rest of the day was spent touring around Queenstown playing role of tourist. Easy enough, Queenstown is definitely a top entertaining city in New Zealand.
4/10/14 Continued. Oh, we found recliners. So random, but absolutely welcomed. Isn't Arrowntown the cutest? Definitely would recommend the local Thai food joint (note last picture.) And notice the change of color? Here comes fall, y'all.
4/10/14 - 32k Finally emerging from the Moratapi Alpine Track we followed the Arrow River through Macetown and into Arrowtown where we stayed the night. Macetown was a gold mining town with a population of 100 to 300 people from 1863 until the early 1900s. Arrowtown, the absolute cutest town in my opinion, is the most popular historic gold mining town in the Otago region located on the banks of the Arrow River.
