The day after John Walker had a truck dropped on him during a save gone-wrong, he woke up in a bad mood. Usually, the serum took care of aches and pains but he had a dull headache that hadn’t gone away with sleep. Still, he tried to follow his routine—habits from his past lives to keep himself steady: waking up at 4:30 regardless if he had a mission or not, going for a run, taking cold showers, and fixing himself a cup of black coffee that did absolutely nothing for him. He had tried to enjoy the quiet of his mornings, but the silence made him feel on edge. Even worse, the kitchen was too clean. Stark had designed it, so it was industrial with all shiny surfaces and smart tech, and was always so clean that it was hard to tell that six people used the space daily. Probably. He hardly saw anyone using the kitchen. Usually, if he timed it right, he was able to avoid most of his teammates before 8am. The only other early riser was Bucky, but after a silent but deeply uncomfortable run-in at 6 am two weeks into living in the Watch Tower, they had both, without discussion, altered their schedules to ensure it never happened again.
John Walker didn’t really know how he felt about his change of circumstance. On the one hand, almost anything was better than his sad, lonely apartment he had moved into after separating from Olivia. On the other, it was hard to tell whether he was really meant to be in the Watch Tower, or merely allowed to be. Sure, he was on the team, but he felt like he was intruding whenever he would walk through the common areas and see Yelena, Ava, and Bob lounging on the couches, watching TV, or talking with an ease that was always just out of reach for him. He usually would just nod his head in acknowledgement at whoever noticed him first and retreated to whatever task he could plausibly claim required his immediate attention.
After yesterday’s more embarrassing-than-painful disaster, he had decided that today would be better. His morning run time had been solid, good enough to suggest he was finally coming out of the slump he had been in. As he made his way back to the kitchen for breakfast, he was already planning the rest of the morning in neat, manageable pieces. When the elevator doors to the common area opened, there were two giant pallets of boxes blocking the exit that he had to push out of the way. Curiosity got the better of him and he opened one of the massive cardboard boxes to see the team’s gaudy orange logo printed across plush blankets. This was undoubtedly its own can of worms, but he didn’t want to let it ruin his day.
He made his way into the kitchen. Yelena was already there, nursing a coffee and a bowl of porridge. She looked unusually put together for the hour, with sleek hair, a clean and ironed jumpsuit on, and an alert posture that suggested an early meeting rather than a leisurely breakfast. Walker registered this, filed it away under ‘none of his business,’ and grabbed a green protein smoothie from the fridge.
“Good morning, Flat Stanley,” Yelena smirked at him over her coffee. John decided to ignore her comment.
“What’s with all the stuff by the elevator?” he asked, trying to sound cool and unaffected.
“It’s all our merch that won’t sell. Mel let us know that they're keeping it here until they can find a better spot for it.” She paused just long enough to add, “Don’t you check your email?”
“Won’t sell because of the lawsuit, or won’t sell because it’s unpopular?” Walker asked, interest piqued.
Yelena raised her eyebrows at him but didn’t answer beyond, “You know, you should really check your inbox more often.”
---------------------
John Walker was still determined to have a good day. Really, he was. Even as he swore up a storm under his breath watching Barnes and Yelena scale a skyscraper in Midtown to get a malfunctioning crane under control. Even Ava was somewhere outside of his line of sight, phasing through the buildings to help evacuate the construction workers trapped on the highest floors of the building. Even though John was stuck on the ground with Alexei and even Bob, who were coordinating the evacuation of the streets below the danger zone with the FDNY and NYPD.
Ten months into working together, the team had these kinds of saves down to a science. Within twenty minutes, the crane was stable, the workers were safe, and reporters were already circling. Walker gave his usual kind of statement, professional, concise, and boring to a reporter he thought he recognized. His mind began to wander with thoughts of FaceTiming his son later when a question directed at Barnes snapped him out of it.
“What keeps you ready for a job like this?”
Bucky shrugged, arms folded across his chest. “Same as always. Sleep, focus, a good razor. Barbasol works.”
Bucky hated talking to the press, so an answer longer than three words surprised Walker. John glanced at Bucky, but the other super-soldier pretended not to see him, keeping his eyes transfixed ahead of him. Huh, that was weird, he thought.
It was even weirder when Barbasol boxes had appeared later that week, stacked on top of the pallets of unsellable blankets. A box even showed up outside his door, which Walker, to his own surprise, ended up using, and liking.
A strange energy had settled over the team in the week following the crane save. Maybe it was the post-rescue press coverage—they’d actually gotten some positive attention, for once. Or maybe it was just random deliveries showing up at the Watch Tower every day. Whatever it was, everyone seemed to be in a very, very good mood.
Even Bucky seemed happier, which was an improvement on his usual drill-sergeant-like attitude for conditioning training. That afternoon, he had gone so far as to let Yelena pick the music to listen to as everyone ran drills, which meant that Walker had to endure trashy pop music while Bucky constantly turned up his treadmill. He tried to enjoy the music that really only Yelena and Bob seemed to like. Maybe Ava liked this kind of music too, but she was conspicuously absent. She arrived halfway through practice in her street clothes, no doubt drawing more attention than she intended to. Her hair was super shiny and impossibly long, causing Yelena to let out a low whistle when she saw Ava.
“Your hair,” she said, tilting her head. “It’s so… shiny.”
Ava shrugged, dropping her backpack on the ground and tying her hair back. “What? I wasn’t skipping for no reason. I was shooting my L’Oreal spot today.”
“Spot?” Walker wondered out loud.
“You know, our ads?” Yelena said. “The ones we are contractually obligated to do?”
“Walker knows all about spots,” Alexei said, clapping him on the shoulder. “I’ve been talking about mine for the past two weeks! You know--”
Walker absolutely didn’t know what Alexei was talking about, because he habitually tuned out the ridiculous old man whenever he wasn’t talking about mission-critical things. He freed himself of Alexei’s grip and grabbed his phone out of his duffle bag. Walker opened his blocked contacts and unblocked Mel, who had previously had a bad habit of calling him after 5pm and on the weekends. Before he could go to his inbox and find his contract for the team, Mel’s name lit up his phone screen. He answered the phone, but before he could get out any more than a “Yes ma’am” she was speaking a thousand words a minute.
“Valentina is literally about to sue you for breach of contract.” Mel said it slower this time, but that didn’t mean what she was saying made any more sense. “Quarter Three ends in two weeks and we don’t have any record of you doing your mandatory sponsorship for Q2 and Q3.”
“Huh?”
“Remember you all signed new contracts back in January that got your salary, benefits, and living situations set up? One part of the contract was that you guys have required public appearances and duties, including at least one brand collaboration every two quarters.”
“This is the first I’m hearing about it,” John said, aware of how stupid this made him sound.
“Then you really should have gone over the contract with a lawyer, like I suggested,” Mel sighed. “Have you even looked at a list of our potential partners?”
John swiped through his phone quickly and found the list in his inbox: Heinenken, Barbasol, Tide, Xbox, Ampm, Peloton, and Talk2Me. “Okay, this isn’t so bad, I’ll just mention I like to visit Ampm during an interview and we’re good?”
“It’s not that simple, John.”
“What? Why not? That’s all Bucky did.”
“Bucky specifically negotiated the contractual appearances portion of his contract down so he only has to do endorsements and no commercials. Unless you have a really good lawyer, you have to do a commercial.”
“Shit,” John muttered.
“Yeah, shit. These things take time. And a lot of these brands have already lined up their campaigns for this quarter and next.”
“Okay, so what about Peloton?”
“They just wrapped a big campaign. They won’t be interested for a minute. How do you feel about Heineken?”
“I’m not peddling that Dutch swill,” John scoffed.
“Okay, well, there’s always Talk2Me?”
“What even is that? An app?”
“Sort of,” Mel sounded cautious. “It’s an online platform that helps connect people to therapists.”
“Therapy? I’m not doing that.”
“Just think about it.”
“Why should I do an ad for something that has literally never worked?”
“John, you don’t really have the luxury of choice.” Mel’s voice was thin and tired. “Out of the brands left, Talk2Me is your best option, unless you can find a company to collaborate with you on your own. Please just let me put
you in contact with the people over there.”
“Fine. I don’t know how well this is going to go over considering there’s nothing a therapist can teach me about dealing with life’s shit. I won’t be a very good spokesman.”
---------------------
The therapist’s office was decorated like a tourist threw up in the waiting room, with big prints of the city skyline and an I ❤ NY poster that had seen better days. A TV was playing some kind of boring home improvement program, which John passively watched until Ava’s face popped up during a commercial break. She was at a party, smiling beside an actress he vaguely remembered from a movie a few years back, and Ava’s hair really did look fancy. That had to be more enjoyable than this, he thought to himself. Of course he would end up with this kind of bullshit gig.
It’s not that John didn’t believe in therapy. It probably worked for some people, like alcoholics and orphans. But John wasn’t like that. He knew how to handle what life had thrown at him. And he didn’t want his already damaged public persona to be attached to something as embarrassing as therapy. If John closed his eyes he could imagine what his father would say…
“John Walker?” A deep baritone voice pulled him from his thoughts. John looked up to find a tall man with close-cropped hair and an expensive neutral expression—someone who looked more like a banker than a therapist. He offered his hand. “Vincent Rossin. Nice to meet you.”
John shook his hand and followed the therapist into a bare back hallway that had none of the eyesore decorations from the waiting room, just some framed certifications and a big Talk2Me sign.
“I see you filled out the digital intake form,” Vincent said, without turning his eyes to John as he opened the door to his office. “I appreciate that. Means we can get going faster.”
Vincent’s office was decorated very simply: two leather chairs positioned across from each other, a bookshelf full of psychology titles, a decently expensive couch, and one plant sitting by the window. John took a seat at one of the chairs.
“So John. Is this your first time in therapy?” John responded with a nod. “Then what brings you in today?”
“Contractual obligation.”
“Right. I heard you're about to be the new face of Talk2Me.” John wrinkled his nose and scoffed. “Yeah?” John felt Vincent’s eyes on him, sizing him up. “You don’t sound thrilled.”
“Let’s just say if New York law didn’t require me to use this service before endorsing it, I wouldn’t be here.”
“Fair enough,” Vincent shrugged, setting down his pen. John waited for judgement, for an impassioned defense of psychology, but it didn't come. John heard himself fill the silence.
“Look, I understand that this stuff is important for some people, but I don’t think talking about my shit is going to do anything for me.”
“That’s not unusual for guys like you. Former Army, right?
John bristled. “Yeah.”
“Me too. In another life.” Vincent adjusted himself in his armchair, and a flash of metal above his shoe made Walker swallow hard. You can’t exactly bitch about your life to someone who’s had it objectively worse.
“Look. I don’t want to sit here and whine about my childhood. Life is hard. You deal with it. You find ways to move on.”
“You don’t have to talk about your childhood,” Vincent said easily. “You don’t have to talk about anything, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“Isn’t that your whole job?” John frowned.
“Not really,” Vincent said. “My job is to help people notice patterns they’re unable to see on their own.”
“That’s gotta be a fancy way to say ‘whining about their problems.’”
Vincent smiled, and John suddenly became aware that Vincent had likely heard all of this before. “Sometimes,” Vincent said, idly twisting a pen with his fingers. “Mostly it’s problem-solving.”
“I’m not a problem.”
“I didn’t say you were,” Vincent replied, unaffected. “You probably just have some habits that made sense for a different time, and don’t make sense anymore.”
John thought about his morning routine, the terse looks exchanged with Yelena, his morning runs that didn’t clear his mind of thoughts of Olivia, of Lemar, of Latvia, of social media, of everything. “I’m functioning just fine.”
“Sure,” Vincent shrugged. “Most of my clients are. They have jobs, relationships. Some of them even have public profiles. And yet, something brings them in here. A partner, a doctor, a contract-- something brings them into my office.”
John exhaled sharply. “I don’t see the point.”
“The point is giving you a place where you don’t have to be ‘on.’ Where you can say something honest and unfiltered and not have it thrown back in your face. If you’re honest with yourself, do you have a relationship like that now?”
John shook his head.
“You don’t need to believe in some kind of spiritual transformation that happens in therapy. I ask everyone who comes in here to be curious that their life could be better if they had different tools to manage life’s problems.”
“And if I decide this is all bullshit?”
“Then you’ll be informed, which is much better than being ignorant.”
John hesitated, and nodded slowly. “I’m not promising anything more than I’m contracted too.”
“Fair enough,” Vincent said. “We’ll take it one session at a time.”
---------------------
“Hello team!” John clocked Alexei’s voice before the elevator doors were fully opened. By the time they slid apart, Alexei was already hauling a massive cardboard box across the common room, grinning ear to ear. “It finally came! Is so exciting!” Alexei slapped the box with a meaty hand.
Ava rose from the couch with cat-like grace. “What is it?”
“It’s Lena’s Peloton,” Alexei beamed. “Lena!”
“I’m here, I’m here,” Yelena was rubbing her ear as she walked into the room. “No need to shout.”
“This is yours?” John asked as he glanced at Yelena and the giant box. “Don’t we have enough equipment in the gym?”
Yelena rolled her eyes. “No Walker, this is part of my brand deal with Peloton.”
“Say again?”
“I filmed a series of bike workouts with them. This bike is part of my payment.”
“This is so cool,” Ava said, running a hand over the bike, which Alexei had somehow already managed to get out of the box. “Did you get some of the monthly subscription paid for too?”
“One year,” Yelena said smugly. “After that… Well, we’ll see how generous Valentina is feeling.”
“I can't believe Peloton worked with you,” John said under his breath. He didn’t intend for it to be overheard, but that didn’t stop Yelena from catching his eye.
“Something wrong, Walker?”
“No, no. This is just a lot cooler than what I ended up doing.”
“What did you end up doing, John?” Bucky appeared by his side like Yelena’s comment had summoned him. “Sell your likeness to be a villain in a video game?”
“No,” John said, a little too defensively, but any will to hit back stalled out before he could say anything else.
“I saw your ad this morning,” Bob piped up from the corner chair that he had been curled up in reading a book. “While I was watching TV. Talk2Me, right?”
“The therapy app?” Bucky asked, looking at John.
“Yeah,” John sighed softly.
Alexei’s face brightened, and he clapped John on the shoulder. “Ah! Very brave, John. You are face of emotional vulnerability and strength.”
“I’m not the face of anything.”
“Can we watch it?” Yelena asked, already grabbing the remote to the common area’s giant TV. “I need to see John Walker: Therapy Spokesman."
“I don’t think—” But Yelena had already pulled up the video. John sank into the couch as his face appeared on screen, professionally lit, calmly saying words like “taking the first step” and “growth” while tasteful B-roll of him running in Central Park and staring out over the Hudson played. Ava tilted her head, eyes flicking between John and the screen. “You look… approachable.”
“Is that good?” John was hyperaware of the heat creeping up his neck.
Bucky made eye contact with John and gave him a small nod, which honestly did help.
“It’s good!” Alexei smiled at John. “You look like a man who listens.”
“It’s good, John. Really.” Yelena said, smiling at John. “Is that where you’ve been going on Thursday afternoons?”
Before John could answer, the ad ended and immediately rolled into another. Alexei’s face filled the screen, shouting joyfully about BetHero, the premier platform for betting on superhero outcomes, showing the different amounts you could win on parlays about whether Spider-Man will trap a baddie in a web or dangle them upside-down; or how many minor traffic accidents the New Avengers would cause during a save.
John groaned with the rest of the team, exchanging smiles with Bob and Yelena. When the ad ended, he didn’t make up an excuse to get up and leave. Instead, he turned to Bucky and asked a question about his Barbasol razors, and the laughter that followed came easily.
