To Love Without Acknowledgement
A romance between a clumsy warrior and his clan’s healer goes unremarked
So we know that Tigerclaw got one-shot gitted and stripped of all nine lives, but presumably Brokentail didn't. Oakstar didn't. So when a leader does something evil and loses a life afterward, a life that isn't their last, do they just sit there in StarClan, frozen as their aspects wait to merge once and for all? Did anyone try to kill the shade of Brokentail as he lost life after life? Is it forbidden to touch a leader who's not fully there?
How did Badgerfang feel when he saw his leader, the cat that sent him to his death, still a a corpse and flickering like a flame?
How did the rest of the kits killed along with him?
What of the adults who died in battle or tried to refuse him?
What did Stonefur think when Leopardstar lost her first life? Her fourth? How much restraint would it take to know that revenge is seconds away, that the chance to ask why is right in front of you?
There had to be something stopping the dead cats wronged by a bad leader from making sure that leader didn't see the rest of their lives.
based off this : Hey, here's a fun new game. Put "📓" or some other version of a book emoji into my inbox and I'll explain the plot of a fanfiction that I haven't written but daydream about.
I have a bunch of fics that are half-scattered ideas and one of those is
Firepaw realizes something is up with ShadowClan before his first Gathering.
Whether it's because he found Yellowfang or because he saw cats smaller than him at the border, Firepaw is Suspicious! And we all know what happens when he is Suspicious.
Not sure what he does about it first. He could roll in toadstools and slink around ShadowClan territory. He could try and ask Sandpaw and Dustpaw to very little avail but get them interested. He could find a kitten in training being tossed over the border like Ravenpaw was and that could tip him off.
Hey, here's a fun new game. Put "📓" or some other version of a book emoji into my inbox and I'll explain the plot of a fanfiction that I haven't written but daydream about.
The two month gap between Firepaw first joining ThunderClan and finding Yellowfang is rife with potential.
I could have Wolf ferry every ShadowClan kit to the barn once a week. The ShadowClan cats who come across the exiles in that graphic novel could tell them about Wolf and have them go to ThunderClan.
I could have them see ShadowClan attacking WindClan in a dream or have Barkface send someone to Wolf like "you were right! Thanks for the warning!" and Wolf could go haring off and maybe get there too late but still have the bunch of apprentices and kittens that were sent to get help to look after.
RiverClan could try for Sunningrocks but they could just leave it alone and the apprentices be the only ones interacting across the border.
Only question is: How OP to I want Wolf to be and how much do I want to throw off canon…?
We have (at long last) an example of a leader retiring and giving up their lives to do so. We have a leader who needed to be forced out at the very beginning of the series. We have a Clan in absolute crisis when the Stars don't get their way.
So.
Would StarClan at the beginning of the series be able to take back lives like they've given them out? Should a leader truly have to die each time to give up that life or can they be deemed unworthy by StarClan
"There are always going to be cats who look at you strangely. Who see you not for who you are, but who they think you should be. They can go eat shit, don't listen to any of them. You make your own path by doing what you know to be right. It is actions that make a cat, not just what they say or think."
"Okay. What does…"
"This have to do with your father? Well, many folks, depending on who you hear, will say that he is not a good cat. I will say that 'good' is relative. He was kind to you and your mother and your older brother, while he lived with us.
He was not nearly as kind to everyone else he lived with. And when he stopped being the cat everyone thought they knew, when he openly started to hurt cats to get what he wanted… that was when he became a massive problem. He changed for the worse, and nobody here can deal with that."
"Why can you?"
"I joined Thunderwoods, but he didn't raise me. I saw him as exactly who he was. There was no kind necessary to someone he saw as dirt he could flick off his foot."
"You don't seem very bitter about that," Tawnypaw mused. "I know I am. They all hate us for something we didn't even do."
"Yeah, it sucks being born to someone deemed 'the wrong cat' by arbitrary standards."
"What's -?"
"Arbitrary? Random. Not something clear to anyone but the cat making those rules up. Make no sense at all."
"Thanks."
"So. Tigerclaw hurt cats here in Thunderwoods. He lives in Shadowmarsh now, and they've accepted him. He might want to see you, but if he does, that happens at Fourtrees with cats from both colonies present. Nobody gets to take you away from your mother and the rest of us, even if they say Tigerclaw really wants to see you."
"But what's so bad about that? Why wouldn't he want to see us? He's our father."
"He is, and he has every right to want to watch you grow. But he left the colony you two live in to join someone else. He doesn't get to take you anywhere unless your mother says he can. He gave up that right alongside membership to the colony."
"But why? What did he do to hurt so many cats?"
"Well, that's quite the list, cubs. And it won't give you a good view of who he is. Anything I could say about Tigerclaw is marred by my personal feelings."
"But you don't treat us like everyone else. You don't think we're bad just because he is."
"I try not to place the sins of a parent upon their cub, no. I do my best to see everyone as their own cat. Are you sure you don't want to wait until you're older? Growing up might give you more context for life and how things work. It would be easier to stomach with the knowledge and wisdom you gain as you grow."
"But who will let us do that?" Tawnypaw challenged.
"Aw, cubs…"
"We deserve to know why they hate us so much. What did he do?"
"When I first came to the forest, the deputy of Thunderwoods was a cat called Redtail. He was a tortoiseshell with a bunch ginger on 'im, darker than me. When I first got to the forest, he and Tigerclaw and my friend, Ravensong, were battling Riverrun for rights to Sunningrocks. In that battle, Redtail died. Tigerclaw was directly responsible for that death."
"Like… he didn't help when Redtail got hurt?"
"Like he was the one who hurt Redtail. That's actually how I got theses cars on my back. He keeps his claws partly unsheathed at all times because they're long and sharp enough to do this kind of damage."
Bramblepaw whimpered and stepped forward, pressing his face into Wolf's flank.
"I'm so sorry…" He whispered. "How do you… How can you even stand to look at me?"
"Because you're smart and clever and half that bastard's size and you stopped when Snowpaw squealed during playfights and you are learning, cub. Both of you are learning to be your own cats. Nobody can take that away from you."
"But… they treat you the same way they treat us. So if it was just that…"
"You're right, smart cub, you're absolutely right. The thing that everyone is mad about… He tried to hurt Bluestar like he hurt Redtail. He wanted to become leader and wasn't willing to serve under her. So he hurt her to take her place. But you don't go against your leader in this colony. That's the biggest no-no there is, among others. The cats around here can't get over that. He betrayed them, and they're taking it out on you.
Which. Speaking of that, let me know when someone says or does something because of this, yeah? They might not like looking at you, but they'll hate getting their teeth kicked in by me."
"You don't have to do that!" Bramblepaw blurted out, alarmed.
"Would you really?" Tawnypaw wondered.
"We all have the same training. Often, you have to back up your words with actions."
"Okay," Tawnypaw said skeptically. "But I don't think they'll stop hating us just because you yell at them."
"We'll see," Wolf smirked. "Wouldn't be the first time."
"I think you should tell them about Tigerclaw." Goldenflower announced. "You're the deputy, after all, someone they know to respect. They would take it well from you. And... you started all this. You've been uneasy around him, around us, from the beginning. You won't hold anything back. You'll tell them the truth."
"Oh, that is a dangerous request, my dear friend. I am not the cat you want to talk about your former mate. You know I don't mince words and you will not like what I have to say."
"Exactly. They need to know why everyone looks at them weirdly and treats them badly. Why not hear it from the cat who started it all?"
"Because I didn't start this. I was pissed off at Tigerclaw for shredding me in battle and treating me and Ravensong like dirt he got beneath his claws. Everything he did is solely on him and has nothing to do with you or his cubs."
"Would that everyone else could see that," Goldenflower sighed.
"I'm sorry that they don't. Betrayal tends to run deep when it comes to close-ranked communities. You know everything about each other, or think you do. So finding out something new, good or bad, is a major shock. Finding out something terrible that uproots everything you stand for..."
"Is even worse," Goldenflower agreed. "My point remains."
"Oh yeah, sure, leave the facts of life to me. But you best not do this again. You never know what your cubs'll come back knowing."
"So… what? You mean to tell me you knew? The entire time, you knew what he was like? What he'd done? You were using us to keep track of him until he did something right in front of us? What if you hadn't stopped him in time?! You can't just expect things to go your way just because you think you know everything!"
"I think," Wolf said. "that there was no proof. I got to the cubs before they got to the Thunderpath. I warned the last set of warriors leaving on patrol that we were spread too thin, that they should stick closer thank usual. But to get someone to believe everything? You don't even believe what's happening right here right now. You expect me to take you all on faith? I can't and I won't. I needed proof."
Fifty Ways For Brokenstar To Die (that's cool but if my friends ask where you are I'm gonna say) :p
"The Gift given by your ancestors has been misused, but if you ever want a chance at rebuilding, it must be spent in its entirety. I have some suggestions, but it's ultimately up to you. But know this: If this cat leaves, he will take your remaining hope for the future with you."
"What do you suggest?"
"I'm interested in seeing what Shadowmarsh comes up with. You all have suffered under him more than any cat can dare to claim. How he goes is rightfully yours."
"But if we asked? Would you be willing to tell just Runningnose or our elders and let them give us those ideas later?"
"Sure!" Wolf grinned coldly.
1. "Make him eat deathberries. Maybe give him poppyseeds first if you're feeling merciful or don't want him to know. The poison might one-shot him but don't count on that.
2. Drown him. Take him to the marsh and sit on him underwater. Won't have to do anything but sit on 'im and watch for marsh creatures.
3. Hell, you could have him fight one of them just for shits and giggles.
4. Drop him off a tall building in Chelford and watch him go splat.
5. Take him to the long Thunderpath at the end of Chelford and watch him get hit by a million cars.
6. Tell the cats of Chelford that he's the reason they never have food or even just his name and rank, and let them air their grievances. That one will be death by a thousand cuts, same as you would, but city cats in particular can be vicious fuckers and they absolutely hold a grudge. You never wanna mess with a city cat.
7. Have a bunch of cats attack him at once. If you're feeling particularly vicious, you could have cats line up in order of grievance and each cat gets a chance to cut him somewhere. Rub debris in the wound for maximum chance of infection.
8. Hell, you could just cut him rub debris in his wound, and watch him get sick from that a bunch.
9. Have cats slit his throat each time he comes back."
"Holy shit, cub, you are absolutely vicious."
"These are all in theory. I could never do any of these in practice, nor would I want to."
"I'll pass these on if we ever run out of ideas. Maybe give them to an elder with a long memory. Thank you for your insight, Firepaw. You have done the cats of ShadowClan a great service."
LINE BREAK
"This is part of the reason I can't be a healer. I don't deserve to be able to decide who lives or dies and how. Giving me that power, even if it's just learning which herbs will kill you at which dose, is not going to work out for anyone. Let me wrap cuts and splint broken bones and talk to cats about their problems, but there are a million ways to die out here. I'm not okay with being given the tools to enact any of them."
StarClan "can't" interfere
“What…? What do you mean you can only give me one life?”
“It’s all he’s lost, I’m afraid. Thank that ginger cub when you get the chance. You could be getting nothing.”
“Why am I not getting all nine?”
“StarClan’s power is not infinite. There can only be as many leaders as there are Clans to lead. And only one cat per Clan can have nine lives. Right now, Brokenstar has eight. Let that be a start.”
“So… what? He has to die seven more times?” Runningnose [Sleetwhisker, the name flashed through her thoughts] growled, astonished. “The cub really was right. Brokenstar dying nine times sure will be tedious.”
“But we deserve a reward for all he’s put us through… this cub… well, these next few days sure will be interesting.”
Possible StarClan ceremony:
"Nine lives you were given and nine lives you have failed to use as StarClan willed. They will now be stripped from you in the order they were given."
"With this life, I rescind my [confidence] in you."
"With this life, I take back the trust you have abused."
"You have proven you have no capacity for justice, so I rescind your ability to mete it."
you need to understand that i have two sets of headcanons. there's the set of realistic headcanons based on my genuine reading of the show, and then there's me playing pretend with my dolls.
Something no one except me cares about is that they cut sooo much of Cloudpaw's apprentice-era shit-headedness from the graphic novels. Which is fine. No problem, genuinely.
However. Because Squirrelpaw is a main character, her apprentice-era shit-headedness will absolutely not be cut out. So this new wave of graphic novels is going to re-ignite the discourse that Squirrelpaw is somehow this uniquely disobedient, insubordinate, terrible harpy bitch and no other apprentice has ever been as bad as her. Which. Cloudpaw was objectively worse. Cloudpaw did everything Squirrelpaw did and had just as much attitude as Squirrelpaw had, PLUS he pulled Kibblegate.
But that got cut down significantly, if not nixed entirely. And now the fandom, some of whom are new and have only read the GNs, some of whom have never had the firmest grasp on basic reading comprehension in the first place, is gearing up to have this same stupid fucking discouse of Annoying Woman Syndrome-ing Squirrelpaw AAAALLL OVER AGAAAIIIN
