Brooch, gold, opal, and enamel (ca. 1900) Herman Marcus (American, 1828–1899) and his firm, Marcus and Co., crafted this Egyptian Revival piece during a period of intense interest in ancient treasures. The brooch features a large white opal set in a gold frame adorned with a scarab at the top, Egyptian figures on each side, and a stylized ibis below.
