Varúa Rapa Nui (2014)

Graphic novel awarded with the Best Comic Book Award in Chile in 2012 at FIC, the main comic fair of our country, and FONDART Creation, takes place in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, when history is confused with legend. 

We witness the collapse of the distant island of Hiva: volcanic eruptions, drought and famine threaten its inhabitants. On the verge of an ecological collapse, the chief (ariki) Roroi must find another place for his people, on the verge of extinction. This desperate search for a new home will lead them to discover a new land, finally arriving the Rapanui people with their King Hotu Matu'a at the head, to a mysterious island inhabited by two antagonistic spirits. It is precisely these two Varua (spirits), Ivi (which means Bone in Rapanui) and Honu (Tortoise) who, through their rivalries, conflicts and continuous interferences with humans, will spin the history of the island, from the first wave of Eastern migration , until the second, which comes from the West.

 Archeology and legends come together to unravel the mysteries of Rapa Nui covering more than 4,000 years of history, along the main milestones that have made this culture so special, through a story solidly structured by the scriptwriter and anthropologist Bernadette Labourdette, who lived all her childhood on the island. The artist is Ismael Hernández, a graduate in Fine Arts and specialized in the development of comic books about native peoples. Both are supported by a large team of collaborators among which are anthropologists, archaeologists, historians and Rapa Nui people who have been the support to structure this story.

Ngāhuia Te Awekotuku is a radical feminist, academic, lesbian rights activist and advocate for Māori sovereignty. Born in Rotorua of Tuhoe, Waikato and Te Arawa descent, she completed a PhD on the effects of tourism on the Te Arawa people. Before her retirement she held various positions including curator of ethnology at the Waikato Museum and professor of Maori studies at Victoria University of Wellington. Te Awekotuku is credited with starting the Gay Liberation movement in New Zealand in 1972 after being denied entry to the United States for being a lesbian - or ‘known sexual deviant.’ She was also active in Ngā Tamatoa, the emergent Māori rights group, and a founding member of Auckland University Women’s Liberation Group. In 1989, with the publication of Tahuri, Te Awekotuku became the first writer in New Zealand to publish lesbian fiction under her own name. Loosely autobiographical stories of a young Māori girl’s growing up and discovery of sexual identity, this collection makes Māori, and especially lesbian, women central and Pakeha peripheral, carrying out what Te Awekotuku has called her ‘responsibility to the fierce women fighters, shamans and poets of Māori legend and myth the resilient courageous women of my own extended family to ensure their stories are not lost in a mawkishly romantic muddle of male translated history’.

“Fāgogo in Samoan refers to fables that are told in a shared context. The receiver of a Fāgogo is vested with an expectation to share the story, making it their own and then passing it on. PATI SOLOMONA TYRELL’s work unpacks the colonial gaze placed on queer brown bodies in an attempt to return gender and sexually diverse identities back to their oracle status.

In Pati Solomona Tyrell’s practice, fāgogo is situated as a restorative practice, shared with other artists and collaborators from the Pasifika LGBTQI space in Aotearoa.  In the film that gives this exhibition its title, the research, writing, choreography, styling and garment construction is all collaborative and honours the tradition of fāgogo by sharing the responsibility of telling this story and allowing artists to respond to their own cultural heritage, unpacking the colonial gaze placed on queer brown bodies to return gender and sexually diverse identities back to their oracle status.”

The occupation of Bastion Point / Takaparawhau

Led by Joe Hawke, the Ōrākei Māori Action Committee occupied Takaparawhā (Bastion Point reserve), a promontory overlooking Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour. Ngāti Whātua maintained the land had been unjustly taken from them and were angered by plans to subdivide it for a private housing development.

In April 1977, a disused warehouse was re-erected on the site as Arohanui Marae, but facilities were rudimentary and in winter the exposed promontory was a bleak place to live. In February 1978, the government offered to return some land and houses to Ngāti Whātua if the iwi paid $200,000 in development costs. The occupiers stayed put, but on 25 May – 506 days after they had arrived – a large force of police moved in to evict them, arresting 222 protestors and demolishing buildings.

When the jurisdiction of the Waitangi Tribunal was widened to cover retrospective issues, Joe Hawke’s Ōrākei claim was the first historical claim to be heard. The Tribunal’s 1987 report recommended the return of land to Ngāti Whātua, and the following year the government agreed

Watching footage of the mass arrests and demolition is heartbreaking. The police sent all the Māori cops out to be on the front line and try to ‘talk’ toa whenua into surrendering. When the cops decided occupiers weren’t going to capitulate, they smashed apart homes, dragged elders into police vans, and prevented parents from visiting their children’s gravesites.

Hey, y’all! Since Moana came out I’ve been seeing a lot more talk on Pacific Island folk, but a lot of it has been using the terms “Pacific Islander” and “Polynesian” interchangeably. Polynesia is a specific region of the Pacific Islands, while the Pacific Islands consist of the regions Micronesia and Melanesia as well. Much love from your local Micronesian. 🌸🍃
