// yeah yeah i know, hiatus and all that. and i may be repeating myself. but bro. i just want to get this off my chest in regards to how legends ZA has left me as of recently.
legends ZA may have been the very game that has broken me. listen, i'm going to be completely honest with y'all, i'm extremely lax when it comes to pokemon games. i've been into this franchise since i was a wee gal, utterly fell in love with DPPT and haven't looked back since.
even with their flaws, i've liked the franchise even well into the 3d jump. i enjoyed swsh. i LOVED legends arceus and scarvio with all my heart. and although i'm of the opinion that bdsp is the absolute worst in all accounts.... legends ZA may have been the one game that has made me go ''if people hate this game, i don't blame them''.
i'm sorry, but scarvio fed me well when it comes to characters, story and gameplay. i was already skeptical when i watched the trailers for ZA and saw the battle system was going to change. but having played about... 80% of the whole game (including the DLC), it's been two months since i touched it because i can't take it anymore. the moment i was given the rayquaza mission i felt the little energy i had left being drained like water in dry terrain. the characters, which are a good reason i play ANY game, are extremely one-dimensional for the most part, the writing is very flimsy, the plot save for very specific things is extremely simple and aimless, the fact that we're dealing with just ONE city instead of a whole region is absolutely terrible and the reason a lot of the game sucks and feels limiting, and everything you do in the game is repetitive and boring even into the DLC. if anything, the DLC makes everything WORSE with all the resource managing and repetitive tasks over and over and over and over.
my whole motivation for the DLC was to get zeraora, cause i genuinely love that stupid electric cat. but the moment i was given the rayquaza mission, i felt my will to live falling into the depths of the distortion world, and i haven't touched the game in like 2 months as of the time i'm writing this. not to mention i'm of the opinion that mega evolution is the worst implemented gimmick of all of the ones we've had so far in SO MANY WAYS.
i'm deeply scared for the future ngl. i really REALLY don't want them to do something like this ever again ngl. i enjoyed legends arceus even with its obvious flaws. i did NOT enjoy legends ZA in the slightest.
// needless to say i love LOVE that misty gave her a shiny wooper that has now become a quagsire... i've always had the desire for rika to begin interacting with the johtonian wooper line and get familiarized with them, and this is very good for her! i also like that then misty invites her to swim together sometime :')
but my favorite part is definitely the little side story thingy you do where she literally invites the protag for dinner and chocolates...
''get ready, cause when we're done with this feast i've got the feeling you won't feel hungry in a while!''
this 100% means nothing in the grand scheme of things but knowing my rika's past, i LOVE LOVE this addition... she 100% invites the people she likes to food and treats because she likes the idea of providing food for someone as a show of gratitude/affection... knowing she spent a long time surviving in the wilderness not eating very well... she knows what going hungry/eating poorly is and wants to prevent the people she loves from going through that at all costs...
so. what the fuck do you mean that rika calls katy 'cariño' (darling) RIKAAA WHEN I GET YOU-
also this was hilarious to me personally because ''jugar a dos bandas'' can mean both ''play both sides'' and a way to say someone is bisexual KJFKFJGKJGKJH
also i'm taking this as confirmation that rika frequents katy's bakery cause that's just adorable
+ she helps her deliver sweets to everyone AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
// personally i think if rika and corbeau discovered each other's backstories they'd feel so fucking seen.
''you also used to be a semi-feral child that caused problems for adults, pokemon were your only friends for a long time, and managed to get out of your situation thanks to someone's kindness???''
// personally i think if rika and corbeau discovered each other's backstories they'd feel so fucking seen.
''you also used to be a semi-feral child that caused problems for adults, pokemon were your only friends for a long time, and managed to get out of your situation thanks to someone's kindness???''
// i already stated my opinion on some things in a previous post about plza, but. my god. having to defeat 1000 trainers to get the shiny charm is the worst thing i've ever had to do in a pokemon game. i'm so short because i enjoy the battling system in this game so little that maybe i haven't done as many battles as the average person(?), but good grief it's all just so repetitive and tedious, i hate it. i really do.
also the more i think about it, the more i'm 100% gonna not touch this game ever again after i'm done with the dlc. the more i think about how the story and characters were fumbled so bad, the more i dislike it. there's no other explanation as to why i see so much praise for it other than recency bias, and even then i still don't understand. don't get me wrong, it's not abysmal dogshit or anything, but good lord...
i really, REALLY miss SV and legends arceus gameplay and story/character wise lmao
// btw, i ''finished'' (still got a lot to do but i'm in the post-game now) pokemon legends za and i... have opinions.
(don't read this post if you like lysa//ndre or XY)
i have mixed feelings leaning towards negative towards XY as games as it is. don't get me wrong, i enjoy them, but they're the weakest pokemon games ever. a lot of characters are forgettable, i don't like team flare nor lysandre, i don't like the rivals either. also i'll be honest with you all, the concept of mega evolution is fine on paper but the execution i don't particularly care about...? there's a lot of pokemon that i don't rly care for and others that i think didn't even need megas, and honestly, i prefer regional variants over megas 100000 times. i think they're fine but nothing to lose my shit about, basically, so whether it was present or absent in the franchise i'm very neutral about.
outside of the pokemon being solid (though even with that i have my gripes, the overabundance of kanto pokemon is extremely felt and i hate that), the map being pretty in areas and things like poke amie and such, the only salvageable thing was AZ's story, and even that was poorly told in the og games.
legends ZA wraps that up specifically in a neat way. but... i'm going to be honest... this may be the most 'meh' entry in a while. it's very clear this game was made more for ppl who like the battling and competitive side of things more than those who play pokemon for fun + the story and characters, because in the story and characterization department it's all mostly pretty weak. also barely any character from the original games shows up, and those who show up either have an ok development, they're basically reset rendering their whole setup and arc meaningless (lysandre, sorry) or... they showed up for like 3 scenes and that's it.
on top of that, your rivals are very boring/one-dimensional for the most part? naveen definitely carries and his interactions are the most meaningful and i rly like him, but the other two are very underexplored and from the very beginning of the game it all feels very forced and contrived, they barely feel like friends. i really like corbeau and naveen, jacinthe is fun too, but outside of that everyone is on the same line of 'okay but very underexplored'.
though one of my biggest problems with ZA is that sometimes i feel uncomfortable catching pokemon from a logical standpoint. the quasartico people are basically taking wild pokemon and shoving them in habitats unnatural to them, mixing them with pokemon they don't go along with that much, causing them to be aggressive and you're basically going into these areas to corner and catch them... in legends arceus it felt leagues more fair since you're the one throwing yourself into their natural environment + the context and setting was different and it felt fairer in my opinion, same for the blueberry academy biomes in scarlet and violet, but here it just feels unfair to the pokemon. i know i shouldn't think THAT much but i swear i spent most of the game thinking the quasartico people were gonna be the bad guys (also a lot of NPCs complain about how dangerous and concerning it all is)... but i guess because you cannot catch pokemon otherwise, it just had to happen like this i guess.
also, i've never been a fan of real time battles. i don't want them to stay. and if they have to stay, keep them out of the main titles and just keep them in the legends games. every time a new pokemon game comes out i can play them for many hours at a time, but this one has left me feeling exhausted and burnt out after only playing 1-2 hours every day. i don't think that's a good sign. also i've heard a lot of folks with physical disabilities among others struggling to play and that just makes me so mad and sad...
// sometimes i wonder how it'd go if rika and corbeau met. i think they'd both have their scary/office persona on first thing, with neither of them allowing any weak points to show, only for corbeau to start acting aggressively benelovent at some point, rika quickly noticing he's actually a pretty solid guy with a good heart and easily slipping into her casual self
then she notices he's short af and flirts with him smiles to herself
