Why Martial Arts?
We are often asked: "Why participate in martial arts?" For many students, that answer is realized after their first class; and for others, the answer is seen after years of training. The truth is martial arts can mean so many things. It can mean getting us into shape, or learning how to stay focused and increase our discipline. It can even be about learning self-defense techniques. And for many, it is simply a great family-bonding experience. Often we find the answer to the question, “Why martial arts?” not to be an answer; but instead, a challenge. The real question then becomes, “What do you want to see yourself do with martial arts?” and further, “What type of person do you want to become as a result of martial arts?” Perhaps, you would like to see yourself as a little more confident, or maybe you’d like to work on your reaction time. Martial arts becomes more than a sport; it becomes a way of life. And once it is a way of life, it becomes our friend, our coach, our therapist, and sometimes, even our nemesis. Martial arts is what we need it to be. It’s there for you when you need it most, and it’s there for you when you least expect it to pull you through the most difficult of times. You make martial arts what you want it to be. We, the instructors and fellow martial artists, help you get the most out of what you need from martial arts. Whether it’s to reach a specific goal, improve on your coordination, or even set a healthy standard for your family; we, like martial arts, will be there every step of the way. From Humble Beginnings
Korean Proverb:
가랑비에 옷 젖는 줄 모른다 Translation: The little things add up, as does the rain in a drizzle, so that the little things amount to a big thing. We may start out as white belts; but overtime, we blossom into so much more. With every punch and kick, every class, and every day we live, we learn that being a black belt is more than mastering a few impressive techniques but a definition of our character. Martial arts becomes more than a sport, and instead: a way of life. It's about applying the tenets of TaeKwonDo to our everyday lives, and continuing to prosper under them. Thus as we live each day, practice a technique, and then start another day we can look back, years from now, and see all that we have become and all the wisdom we have gained.
The Meaning Behind Tiger-Rock
Tiger-Rock is identified with the symbolism of the Siberian tiger, native to Korea and known for its power, prowess and sense of justice, but unfortunately endangered, just as our tenets are endangered values. As the Tiger symbolizes justice and bravery, the Rock symbolizes the steadfast and immovable life spirit of the Korean and Western civilizations. Tiger-Rock Martial Arts International believes that the success comes from honoring both Korean/Eastern cultural heritage and the philosophy of the Western mind dating back to the Athenian culture, the beginning of Western democratic thought.

Nia Sanchez--4th Degree Tiger-Rock Black Belt and now -Miss USA 2014
Miss USA 2014, Nia Sanchez, is a Tiger-Rock 4th degree Black Belt. She explains why self-defense is important: Nia Sanchez doesn't feel like she's ever been in any real physical danger. She has never felt threatened in public or feared she could be the victim of any type of violence. There was, though, that one time a few years ago when she was in a public place and some jerk grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her in the opposite direction of the way she was going. Maybe the man was just joking around. Sanchez wasn't going to stick around to find out, quickly using her martial arts training to get the man to remove his grip. That joker got off easily. Sanchez, the newest Miss USA, is a fourth-degree black belt in taekwondo and competed in tournaments through high school. If she wanted to hurt the guy badly, she could have. The Las Vegas resident and Miss Nevada has been training in taekwondo since she was 8 years old and also has two years of Brazilian jiu-jitsu training under her belt. "I've never been in a situation where I felt threatened or anything," Sanchez told FOX Sports. "I'm very lucky for that. But I'm confident that if it ever did happen, I could take care of myself." Don't expect Sanchez, 24, to be competing in the UFC or MMA any time soon. While she is a big fan of the sport, she has actually never been to a live UFC event, which she hopes will change in July in Las Vegas. Sanchez has heard quite a bit about UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, but has never seen her fight. Rousey defends her belt against Alexis Davis at UFC 175 on July 5 at Mandalay Bay. Rousey was the first American woman to earn an Olympic medal in judo. Like Sanchez, she has trained in martial arts almost her entire life. When she was 16 years old, Sanchez's trainer moved, so her father ended up buying the taekwondo studio. Ironically, her sensei opened up a new gym in Washington state — near where her mother lived. When Sanchez visited her mother, she was able to continue her training, too. "It's been a way of life for me," Sanchez said. "I like tradition. I like the respect factor of it." Though she's a beauty queen and will represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant later this year, Sanchez said she wasn't very girly growing up. At tournaments, she never wore makeup and always had her hair up in a ponytail. The object was never to look attractive — it was to win. "I wanted to look as tough as possible," Sanchez said. Today, people are stunned by her taekwondo pedigree. She continues to train and now that she'll be living in New York during her stint as Miss USA, she's currently looking for a gym where she can practice taekwondo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Her sister is also a BJJ competitor. "They don’t even get it," Sanchez said of outsiders. "I think it's kind of a funny reaction. I explain to them how it's a part of my life." Sanchez took some heat for an answer she gave to a Miss USA judge about the high rate of sexual assault crimes against undergraduate college women. Sanchez responded that it's important for a woman to know how to defend herself. Obviously, women should not have to defend themselves — no one should fear be the victim of an attack. But Sanchez thinks in case there is trouble, a female should know self-defense. "Why not empower women to take care of themselves?" Sanchez said. "It would be great to live in a world without crime and without rape and murder. But that's not reality." Sanchez said when she has kids, she will definitely put them into martial arts classes from an early age. She sounds almost like Rousey when she explains what she believes people should know how to do when faced with a violent threat. "Break their knee, break their ankle, break their elbow," Sanchez said. "Make sure they're in so much pain, they can't cause you any pain." Not quite spoken like the typical beauty queen. Cosette Pease proves TaeKwonDo is more than self-defense.
Cosette Pease recently made the cover of She Magazine, a popular magazine for women based out of Sioux Falls, SD. Pease, a 2nd Degree Level 4 Black Belt, is a student and trainer at Tiger-Rock Martial Arts of Sioux Falls. In the featured article, Pease talks about her journey through Taekwondo and the benefits of participating in the sport. Pease originally took up Taekwondo so that she could spend more time with her family, but she quickly realized that Taekwondo was something more than just simple self-defense. She had also believed that once she reached black belt that she would be done. However, Pease says, "You realize that the black belt is the beginning of the journey. You think by the time you get to black belt you'll know everything and have it all mastered, but that's not the case. You're starting to see openings in your sparring and get better at strategizing. You just want to continue." She grew to love the challenge that Tiger-Rock Taekwondo presented to her and was inspired to obtain her Certified Personal Trainer license. The physical benefits of Taekwondo are something that Pease enjoys as well. As someone who has always been into fitness, she found that Taekwondo stressed the importance of body alignment and the power needed to execute different movements. Being aware of one's own body alignment and the connection that makes into building power is one of the main teachings in Tiger-Rock Martial Arts. "Before you start," Pease said, "You're not really sure what to expect, because you see people doing forms and breaking boards, but you don't really realize how much coordination is involved, or that sparring is one of the best calorie burners there is." Learning self-defense skills is another benefit to participating in Taekwondo, but Pease stresses the importance of continuing that education rather than taking one or two classes. "You can go to a self-defense class once and find it to be really helpful, but you're going to forget it if you aren't practicing it regularly … That's something you develop by being disciplined so that it becomes more natural," she stated. Providing the opportunity for members to learn and apply self-defense skills is something included in every training session. Tiger-Rock students regularly practice escape skills and counter-aggression skills, and they are tested on those skills as well. These are skills that are stressed so that they become second nature to the students. Although Taekwondo is a great physical sport that provides valuable skills, it is also a sport that students enjoy and have fun participating in. Many enjoy sparring against one another, and Pease is no different. "It's kind of a thrill when you line up against a big guy and you can hold your own and land a shot on him," she said. "And it's a great stress relief, too. We're serious about it, but there's a fun aspect to it where you've gotten to know the people who have been doing it for awhile. There's just a fun factor, too, of being able to hit somebody in the head and then laugh and do a fist bump and say, 'That was awesome!'" The Dragon Who Rose Up From the Stream.
It's #MotivationalMonday! 개 천에서 용 난다 is translated to, "a dragon (용) who rises up from the stream (개천)." In Korea, they use this idiom to mean a person with great talent was once a person who had nothing. In TaeKwonDo, we all begin as white belts and remember our first few steps as martial artists. We carry these memories with us as we move up in the ranks; and eventually, we become the "dragons" who rose up from our own "streams" of hard work, dedication, and perseverance.
