The Poetics of Softness
Q: “an object that give in is actually stronger than one which resists, for which reason it also permits the opportunity to be oneself in a new way”
C: I really like this portion of the article because it not only applies to sculpture but also it can also be applied to human relationships as well. To develop in any type of relationship, there has to be some level of vulnerability and softness which can make a relationship stronger. In a way this can be seen as “giving in” and letting your true self out which can be seen as strong and courageous. When you “resist” there is no opportunity to grow and expand mentally. In sculpture, we tend to manipulate and change the natural state of the materials and sometimes they can become weaker. We don’t allow them to exist as they are.
Q: Can an object that has not been manipulated, just changed in context, still be considered a sculpture (ex: a plain water bottle)?
