Favorite Costumes (5/?) - Labyrinth 1986

Sarah’s ballgown 

Sarah’s Ballgown from 1986’s Labyrinth was designed by Brian Froud and Ellen Flyte. There are panniers worn under the skirt. The skirt is comprised of six layers; the bottom layers are made up of cotton muslin lining, yellowish iridescent layer, soft white, and light dove gray layers, and silver lace. The top layers are made up of cotton muslin lining, pink and greenish iridescent layers. The final layer of fabric has an irregular pattern with silver threads throughout. The iridescent layers and lace are scalloped at the hem. The skirt is pleated in Kingussie pleats at the front and back. The dress has a dramatic puffed leg of mutton sleeve made of the pink iridescent fabric and silver lace from the skirt and is gathered at the top and goes into a fitted sleeve with lace at the cuff. The bodice is boned, has princess seams, and a pointed waistline. The bottom edge of the bodice is piped. The neckline has lace appliques, rhinestones, and beads.

While I love all the costumes in Labyrinth, Sarah’s ballgown from the dream sequence deserves it’s own moment. This is one of my favorite costumes because it is so unabashedly a BALLGOWN. This gown is also a perfect snapshot of  the decade its from. The excessiveness of the 1980′s is perfectly captured in this dress. I also love how the styling is proportional to the largeness of the gown, big hair and a spun silver metal headpiece.
