Creepiest comedy I've ever watched...
Spoilers for Drop Dead Fred
I've been watching a film called Drop Dead Fred, given to me to borrow. I've never heard of it in my life. It is described on the back of the cover as a 'rip-roaring funny comedy' and 'hilarious film'.
It is probably the creepiest thing I've ever watched.
Drop Dead Fred, in a nutshell, is an imaginary friend Elizabeth had in childhood. She breaks up with her husband and Fred comes back to haunt her. This guy Fred is just... wtf. He did things like get her to trash the kitchen while playing 'burglars' with her in the middle of the night, ending up with her dad getting arrested. He also cut her hair while she was sleeping. Twice, adult and child.
He also smeared dog poo over the carpet. Got her to sink a boat, punch a woman who she thought was Fred. AS AN ADULT.
He's also prompted Elizabeth to say she'll cut her mother's head off with scissors, eat her and 'poo her out all over the table'
I haven't found one bit of it funny. In fact, I'm almost certain Fred is either a pedophile or a Elizabeth has been having severe schizophrenic episodes since she was very young.
No one thought to take her to a psychologist at the time, and her mother tries to fix the situation when he 'comes back' as an adult by going to a CHILD psychologist, who simply gives her mother some pills to give her without even talking to Elizabeth (how the hell do you know what medication to give someone without seeing her to diagnose her?)
Fred can control her physical actions, is shown to physically do things in the real world despite not being real (so I'm assuming she's doing it without knowing it) and to make her think another person is him. He is creepy as hell.
The adults actions are even scarier. Mother taking away her jack in the box where 'Fred lives' despite the emotional trauma, a man saying he loves how crazy she is despite her having thrown food around the room in a restaurant. It's just weird.
At some point, her husband decided to come back to her (but it's pretty damn obvious he's using her) and he declares he can deal with Fred. He and Elizabeth get it on and Fred stands over them making out, making derogatory comments (pervert much?). And then he also suggested at one point that she slit her husbands throat with his shaver.
In the end, she pretty much has a drug trip and 'defeats her demons'. Which, bizarrely is the only part of the film which makes sense.
This film isn't just not funny, I'm actually scared by it. In my opinion, it's so bad it's bad.
I don't know what I'm going to tell my friend when he asks me if I liked it.
Oh, and it's revealed that Fred is 'helping' another child at the end o-o WTF.
And if you like that film, I meant no offence to you. Different tastes :3
