'The Overs' Update
Making one statement about this, then disappearing: The Overs is not being published. That rumor spread around like wildfire these past few months and I did not want to deny or confirm it simply because I WAS, at one point (around February), pretty committed to trying to totally rewrite it and turn it into an original piece. Many assumed I was just going to copy-paste it and toss it to a publisher, which...hurt, among other far more hurtful assumptions made during that time. At this point though, (mid/late April) I was really only planning to take The Overs down 1. because of the sheer overwhelm of a community it attracted, and 2. because I was very disappointed with the poor handling of the character arcs and stories for the women of The Pitt S2 (among other controversies the cast and writers have accrued) and did not feel comfortable associating my work with the show anymore. Now, however, there's a wave of people validly upset about The Overs taking place during the Jim Crow era. Truthfully, I wrote it to be set during the 60s of southern America because I wanted to write about and convey the terribly difficult struggles of homosexuality (something I very personally identify with), but it felt very wrong not to include other main characters from The Pitt's cast, and I absolutely refused to write off or downplay those characters' struggles or their identity (specifically with Heather Collins and her family) for the sake of an insensitively naive / false depiction of what that time in history (especially in Tennessee) was like. I am not a person of color, and though I tried doing as much research as was available to me in order to educate myself and try to tackle this difficult subject matter, it was ambitious at best, and insensitive altogether to try doing so. I've taken The Overs down now and removed myself and my work from all fandom spaces. Human to human: I'm still not even sure whether that was the correct decision to make, but it felt like what was best, considering the amount of upset the story was/is causing. The very last thing I ever wanted to do was upset anyone or come across with ill intention, my goal was to write a story depicting the struggles of homosexual relationships while not ignoring the struggles of other characters.
