Blake Lively, Rihanna and Misty Copeland all made the list.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt on his surprising favorite film of the year during TIME's 2015 Best of Culture photo shoot: “Petit had this crazy idea, and even though every voice in his head must have said, ‘That’s impossible…you should give up now,’ he went ahead and did it anyway.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Read the full story on TIME.com. #JGL #bestof2015 http://ift.tt/1YojRtj
Meet the Cast of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Image 5 of 6. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The loveable R2-D2 has been a fan favorite since his first screen appearance in 1977's "Episode IV: A New Hope." “I grew up with them,” says Marco Grob (@marcogrob), who photographed the droid. "You get almost star-struck when you meet R2-D2. It’s incredible when you see it getting unwrapped. It was certainly one for the books. Something I’ll never forget.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ R2-D2 was photographed at Pinewood Studios, London on Oct. 29, 2015. Read the full story at TIME.com. #starwars #theforceawakens http://ift.tt/1Ys9v6B
Meet the Cast of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Image 4 of 6. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ J.J. Abrams is directing Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He recalls first seeing Star Wars at the Avco Center theater in Los Angeles, Calif. at age 11. “It was a confluence of greatness, all these levels of things working spectacularly together,” he says. “And it had incredible heart. There was a sweetness to the story that gave the film this palpable sense of hope.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's the kind of impression he hopes his new fillm will make, which, if the box office is any indication, most certainly will. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photograph by Marco Grob (@marcogrob) at Fox Studios in Los Angeles on Oct. 26, 2015. Meet the Cast of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Image 3 of 6. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mark Hamill plays Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is out in U.S. cinemas today. In an interview with TIME, Hamill admits he was surprised when he was called back to a galaxy far, far away. “Remember the torch-bearing angry villagers that stormed the castle in Frankenstein? I had images of that, substitute light sabers for torches,” he says. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, he concluded. “I had no choice whatsoever. And I love it." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photograph by Marco Grob (@marcogrob) in Los Angeles on Oct. 27, 2015. See the full story TIME.com. #starwars #theforceawakens http://ift.tt/22dNj4G
Meet the Cast of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Image 2 of 6. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, former Princess Leia, actress Carrie Fisher, returns to the screen as "General." Previously known for her revealing metal bikini, the 59-year-old actress says she was told to lose weight to play the character she originally portrayed 38 years ago. “They don’t want to hire all of me – only about three-quarters!” Fisher told Good Housekeeping U.K. “Nothing changes, it’s an appearance-driven thing. I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photograph by Marco Grob (@marcogrob) in Los Angeles on Oct. 27, 2015. Meet the Cast of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Image 1 of 6. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Out in U.S. cinemas today, Harrison Ford is reprising his role in the latest Star Wars sequel as the beloved Han Solo. For Ford, the original Star Wars movies changed the way we make fiction onscreen. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “When that giant spaceship flew over your head, and it was preceded by that kind of old-fashioned title crawl,” says Ford. “And then the rumbling sound of that spaceship, you were in the movie for approximately 30 seconds before you knew you were in for something that you had not seen before and that was gut-level engaging.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Marco Grob (@marcogrob) photographed Ford in Los Angeles, Calif. on Oct. 16, 2015. @TIME's Art Streiber (@aspictures) photographed Tina Fey, Paula Pell, and Amy Poehler for "Sisters", a comedy film written by Paula Pell that rolls out in theaters today. "We all came to the conclusion that the most successful image would come from having Paula play the 'straight woman' while Amy and Tina played it over the top," Streiber tells TIME. "Once we put on Kanye West’s 'Gold Digger' and Rihanna’s 'Bitch Better Have My Money,' Tina and Amy’s dance moves were unstoppable while Paula perfectly played 'disdain' for their gyrations." TIME's Top 10 Photos of 2015. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Each photograph, carefully culled from thousands and presented here unranked, reflects a unique and powerful point of view that represents the best of photojournalism this year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2015 gave us the ever picture of Pluto, made by @NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft. The high-resolution color image was taken more than nine years after the two cameras that shot it left Earth in the fastest spacecraft ever launched into space. "This is really the completion of a 50-year quest to explore all of the planets in our solar system," says photographer Alan Stern (@alanstern). "NASA began under President Kennedy and finished under President Obama. I believe that 100 years from now, this image will be an icon from the year 2015." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Read more from each #photographer at time.lightbox.com. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #topten #bestof2015 #pluto #space http://ift.tt/1O7fKGW

"I just took my phone out so the police [could] be aware that someone was present, [that] there was a witness over there," says Feidin Santana (#feidin), who shot video of police officer Michael Slager’s shooting Walter Scott eight times in the back. The still image from the video provided police evidence, traveled from social media to front pages and even made the cover of TIME. Never before has the camera been as ubiquitous as a witness. TIME's Top 10 Photos of 2015. Each photograph, carefully culled from thousands and presented here unranked, reflects a unique and powerful point of view that represents the best of photojournalism this year. TIME's photo editors selected photographs from critical news stories, such as the terror attacks in Paris. The picture that struck us most was from @ap.images' Peter Dejong who photographed a man carrying two children as panic broke out during an homage to victims. The terror and emotion he captured on their faces is striking. "Somebody started screaming around the corner from Le Petit Cambodge, and in a split second my brain started raccing weary of what the crowd would do," says Dejong. "I literally shot two images focusing on the person that appeared to stand still holding two children." "It was a surreal scene to be sitting along highway 20 with dozens of firefighters who were essentially waiting for the fire to come to them," says photographer Justin Sullivan (@sullyfoto). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Read more from each #photographer at time.lightbox.com. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #topten #bestof2015 #wildfires #california http://ift.tt/1UACMvj

"It was impossible not to think of World War I in that static, etheral moment," he tells TIME. "The ice and fog seemed to blanket the landscape and indeed, the emotions of the scene, temporarily delaying the shock of defeat and the reveal of the aftermath." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Read more from each #photographer at time.lightbox.com. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #topten #bestof2015 #ukraine http://ift.tt/1QsIP6d
