On August 15, 1977, Jerry Ehman, a volunteer at the Ohio State SETI progam, observed a strong signal received by the radio telescope. It was dubbed the "Wow! signal" because he circled the spot on the printout and jotted down "Wow!" on the page. Some deem it the best candidate for a radio signal from an artificial, extraterrestrial source ever discovered and to date has never been observed again (SETI, event)
