To Our Veterans
As we enjoy this beautiful day, let us all take a moment to reflect on and appreciate the sacrifices that the men and women in our military, along with their families, have made and continue to make in protecting our freedoms and this great nation. Thank you to all who have served and are serving in our military. As I reflect on those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, I'm reminded of the following clip from the movie 'Saving Private Ryan'. In the movie, General Marshall recites a letter that President Lincoln wrote to a mother who lost all five of her sons fighting in the Civil War. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLDvVaLFqXI]

Voting Irregularities in Virginia
There are numerous reports of touchscreen voting machines improperly recording votes for Democrats instead of Republicans. Watch an actual example of what's happening in this link from Channel 13 discussing what's happening in VA Beach as voters try to cast their ballots. http://www.13newsnow.com/story/news/politics/elections/2014/11/04/rep-rigell-voting-machine-problems-in-2nd-d/18455653 My legislation, that became law in 2007, phases out these types of voting machines. It is time these voting machines are no longer used. 1.usa.gov/1AcJgKC

Farmers Insurance Dream Big Challenge
Ms. Cindy Ferek, a physical education teacher at Turner Ashby High School in Bridgewater, has been selected as a finalist in the competition to receive a $100,000 grant from Farmers Insurance Dream Big Challenge program. Her proposal, a mile-long paved trail around the school, will help prepare students for the real-time challenges of driving through exercises targeting decision making. In addition, it will help make Bridgewater's beautiful surroundings more accessible to special needs students at Turner Ashby. In addition, the trail would be open to the public, making it a valuable contribution to the community as a whole. Ms. Ferek is the only finalist selected from the Commonwealth and anyone with a valid email address can vote at https://www.thankamillionteachers.com. Polls won't close until November 30, so please share this and let's help Ms. Ferek make this excellent project a reality!

This weekend, Friday, October 10th through Monday, October 13th, Virginia will be holding its 8th Energy Star and WaterSense Sales Tax Holiday. If you need to replace any of your old household appliances, this 'tax holiday' weekend is a great opportunity to save money now and in the future. Qualifying products must be priced at or under $2,500 and certain used Energy Star and WaterSense products will also qualify for the tax exemptions. Online orders also fall under the holiday, as long as they are purchased within the time limits, and manufacturers have the items available for immediate shipping. I hope that you will take advantage of this great yearly event. Products that are tax exempt this weekend include light bulbs, air conditioners, ceiling fans, washing machines, dishwashers, dehumidifiers, and refrigerators. The Virginia Department of Taxation has an informative webpage about the holiday. Should you have any questions, you can visit the page at http://www.tax.virginia.gov/site.cfm?alias=EnergyStarQualifiedProductsHoliday
