Title: The Women of Amphissa Date: 1887 Technique: Oil on canvas Place of conservation: Private collection Between history, fashion, and legends, Lawrence Alma-Tadema (Netherlands, 1836 - 1912) evokes the calm aftermath of a Dionysian (the god of the vineyard, wine, celebration, and its excesses) celebration through luminous marble, flowing draperies, and soft, muted tones. The sleeping and resting women create an atmosphere of silence and sensuality, while the standing figure adds a theatrical grace to the composition. Inspired by Ancient Greece, the painting blends classical beauty with a dreamlike intimacy that feels both elegant and timeless.
Amphissa : town located in the municipality of Delphi, Greece.
