“Sir-!” Oh gosh, and Alphonse still managed to be smaller than the Strong-Arm Alchemist, despite his hulking form. He stood in front of the Major, waving his arms a bit as if that would be a distraction.
“Yes, sir, I understand! It’s- it’s outrageously priced, sir, but you-- your shirt, sir, we’re in public-!”
“You don’t get to tell me who’s overreacting. You’re under-reacting!“
“All murder is illegal. Also, attempted murder.“
"Well, that’s just mean. And kind of weird."
"We cannot tell you. We’re not allowed."

“R-right! Right, of course, s-sir!” So of course he would decide to actually work on a day that Alphonse was reading fiction… noooooo, he couldn’t walk up on days when he was breastplate deep in an alkahestry text or something like that…
He turned fully toward the Colonel, sufficiently blocking the stack of texts behind him. Hopefully he wouldn’t--
Of course he noticed. Damn it, the Colonel was perceptive- trust begets leniency, it would seem, and Alphonse had been too trusting of Roy from the start. He shifted a bit, shaking his head emphatically from side to side. “That’s not--” ........... better to let him go with that.
“......... Yes! Yes, that is what I’ve been researching while Ed is away. Thank you for keeping that... between us... sir.”

Were that his eyes could blink in confusion, they would. Instead, a red, unwavering stare met the blond’s. He’d... met someone like Alphonse before? He didn’t know how to politely tell someone that no, he highly doubted that, but he’d entertain it at least. “I-is that right? Huh...” he offered, reaching a massive gloved hand nervously behind his head.
Eizen... Eizen the Reaper. Oh dear. Why was he called the Reaper? That felt like a title that never followed something positive. It wasn’t like someone named the Reaper would offer cookies to kids or lead charity runs. No, Reaper often insinuated something more heinous, didn’t it? But this man didn’t seem heinous. He just seemed... well a bit far of center, to be certain.
What was the harm in being polite?
He held out a hand, masking his tentativeness with surprising ease ( well, considering his body and expression couldn’t betray him ). “I’m Alphonse Elric. It’s nice to meet you... Eizen.” He’d almost elected to calling him Reaper. That didn’t sit well. He really hoped the guy didn’t tell him to call him Reaper...
Sometimes it baffled him, how hard Edward could sleep. Despite his heavy footfalls, despite the fact that he dropped his book twice, and despite the way the unsanded, unruly door caught on the floor with a pained groan as he tugged it open, his older brother gave naught by a disturbed snort before he fell back into a sound snooze. He knew there was no real difference, reading inside or outside- there was no cool breeze, no issue of light to hinder him, no allure of nature other than aesthetic. But something always comforted him about sitting out in the courtyard when he got the chance. Perhaps it was the phantom memory of a breeze, the recall of a chilly winter’s night, the mystery of the dark that used to frighten a much younger, more naive Alphonse.
Or... maybe it was just the stars.
Reading commonly was just that- another new book, a concept to master, something to pass the tedium of another sleepless night. But nights like this, where the clouds were parted, the moon in reticent hiding, and the stars in full view? These nights reminded him of rolling hills and the mild spring. They reminded him of drawing phony transmutation circles between the stars, professing adamantly in front of a particular female witness why his was so much cooler and more useful ( and maybe sneaking in how he was taller just for spite ). They reminded him of laughter and the plush of gentle grass tickling against his back...
Kinda felt like a crime, just ignoring them like that. If there was one thing Alphonse now had in spades, it was time. He could elect some unconstructive moments to stargazing, to thought.
And so the armor sat, still as stone, head cant skyward with an all but forgotten heavy tome in his lap. Edward would inevitably nap on the train where there was no sky to distract him. He could play catch up later.
[thereapersbooty] Another walking, talking suit of armor? Eizen had seen one before, but that daemon had sacrificed himself to become the ultimate blade. This one didn't seem particularly daemonic. Perhaps it was some rare treasure? "Fascinating," he murmured, eyeing the gigantic suit. Probably a bit rude on his part, but the Reaper didn't always stand on courtesy.
And here he’d almost expected today to pass by normally. Then again, when was there ever a normal day for them? And it wasn’t as if Alphonse wasn’t accustomed to people side-eyeing him in wonder and curiosity. He was... well, an oddity to be sure, even if people weren’t fully aware of how much so. But typically these people were more.... how do you put it...
Tactful.
The armor peered down at the blond, genuine curiosity in his tone as he said, “Can I help you, sir?”

“C-Colonel!” It was as if he thought he’d done something wrong, sitting patiently, awaiting Edward’s return to the state library. Well, less that he’d done something wrong and more that he’d been caught red-handed reading what was clearly not alchemy text. No, he’d meandered to a more leisurely area of the library, plucking off of the shelf a tome that was nondescript in a way that betrayed he had clearly removed the dust jacket.
The armor snapped it shut, hiding the book beneath a generous supply of educational material. “Wh-why are you here? Ed should be back any time-!”

As many people do, Alphonse Elric had a fatal weakness. This weakness was not physical- his armored form had chinks and wear, to be sure, but was majorly resilient and sturdy. This weakness was not of heart either. Alphonse’s moral compass was stable and assured, his maturity typically beyond his years. No, his weakness of note was an emotional one, one of compassion, of kindness...
Particularly toward felines.
At present, the armored form hovered in the side alley, thumb running over the head of the nearly sleeping kitten. It was always a pleasant surprise when an animal trusted him. With his hulking form and guess-work approach to gentleness, he couldn’t blame trepidation from animals. So when the diminutive orange tabby curled affectionately in his palm... well-! What else was he supposed to do!? Leave it out in the elements, cold and injured and hungry?!
He weighed his options critically. Leaving him here was unacceptable. Inconceivable. And anyone who expected him to do that was nothing short of inhuman ( and he would have no qualms telling them as much ). But sneaking him home... his brother wouldn’t allow; as frustrating as that was, Alphonse understood. Nonetheless... did he know anyone who could take him in? Probably not.... He could make him a little house! ... no, that was stupid...
“And how’d you do that to your tail, little buddy...?” he said softly, inspecting it with a keen severity. The docking was clearly not genetic, but nor did it seem human manufactured. Another animal? Or some other accident... It needed to be addressed properly...
“........... Ed’s gonna kill me...”

This body comes with many inconveniences. But inconveniences don’t make me miserable! There is no reason for you to pity me! My life was put back together with alchemy by my brother. If I deny myself, that would mean I’m denying my brother, along with alchemy. I believe in the potential that alchemy holds. I want to believe in it!
