Mateo and Kristine didn't actually get married, hence the missing rings. But, they both PROMISED each other to actually have a family tho, and call each other as husband/wife while not being married/tied to marriage.. They both want the freedom still, while having the responsibility to care for a baby, but as I already mentioned, she passes and Mateo is now left with Jose.. But since he isn't exactly married to Kristine, there weren't any much loss Mateo had to deal with, and he does still deeply miss her, but all of his focus has been lately on taking care of Jose, while having to move on.
