Today was a little bittersweet. I fell in love with this property instantly. 6 acres of beautiful greenery. But I have to be smart in the land I buy. Over half of it is unusable due to the spongy wet ground. But what a sight to adore! I can't wait to see what other areas will catch my eye. Just picturing myself and little home is making this experience so much better.
BIG Progress.
I FINALLY HAVE A DOOR! Once my dad got that door up it instantly felt like a home. He also got all of the windows in and that seemed like a dangerous task since he had to lift the Windows to the top of a ladder to set them. Talk about anxiety! I wish I would have got a picture of that. Now that the house is wrapped, has windows, and a door my dad and I can start ordering the siding. the exterior is SO close to being done. I am extremely thrilled and thankful that my dad and I are able to do this together. My mom is just beaming with excitement to start on the interior. We are constantly finding ideas of how to make the home "mine". Yesterday we also had a random visit from some strangers who couldn't help but take a look at the project. It's so nice to be able to share this with so many people. We've gotten a lot of interest, ideas, and help!
Financial and Mental Exhaustion.
Shopping for my tiny house brings me so many emotions. It is mentally exhausting coming up with ideas for the exterior and interior and it's also draining having to spend the money I worked so hard to save. But what I am spending is really helping things come together. The roof, windows, and door are all ready to be set in place. After about two hours at Lowes figuring out custom dimensions for the Windows and door I was able to actually accomplish a large (and EXPENSIVE) order. It was severely draining mentally, physically, and financially but I am glad my mom was there to help me out. As the walls are just about up I am able to picture what I will be living in. TINY could almost be an understatement. It is definitely small. But it's amazing how talented my dad is. He's never done something like this and it's really neat seeing all the inventive things he can do. I am really looking forward to the exterior being completed. It's going to be beautiful. However, after today's shopping trip I think that once the exterior is completely finished I am going to take a break to financially recover for a month or two. I knew this was going to be a spendy project. I am lucky to have a small savings. But I also know that I don't want to run my balance to zero. During the short break I will be able to focus on the details of the interior. That will definitely be another challenge seeing how I am very indecisive. I can't say enough how exhausting this project is. But it is TOTALLY worth it and it will be even more worth it once it is all finished.
PROGRESS.
Sunshine has been such a blessing for this build. My dad has been moving so quickly with getting things done. And it is so fun to help. We have finally gotten a roof up and a whole wall. While so much progress is happening, I am finally realizing how small my soon-to-be home is going to be. It's definitely going to be a different experience. Next I will be choosing my siding, rooftop, windows, and door. I am thrilled at how fast it is moving along. God is so good.
ANOTHER BIG DAY! With a small window of no rain we were able to get 3 more of the 8 walls up. Only two more to build and put up and I will have the structure of my house. So happy.
Today's progress was incredible. However, we were halted because of our bipolar Washington weather. We went from sun to rain to hail to sun to more rain. Our power even went off and on a few times. It's so nice to finally see a structure up. I'm happy to see the rest of the walls up. Hoping for some sun next weekend.
Week 4 & 5.
The lack of posting is due to the rain and the whole family getting a bad cold. We've been slow moving in the building process. My dad has been working during his minimal time off to build the walls so that we can build the ultimate structure of my new home. A lot of frustrations arose because of measurements and figuring out where we wanted Windows to be. I was anticipating the day we would actually begin to see something out up and today was the day!! However, we were halted because of today's bipolar weather or sun to rain to hail to sun to more rain. Our power even flickered off and on a couple times. Yikes. But today was a big day, as we did get so elf the walls up.
Week 3. Building the subfloor with insulation underneath. Looks easy. But very difficult due to different measurements and leveling the insulation with the top of the 2x4s.
We bought so much stuff at Lowes. And this is only the beginning. YIKES.
Build Day!
TODAY WAS A BIG DAY! My dad and I got up early to go on a shopping trip. Who knew buying wood and supplies would be so exciting?! After stocking up and checking out it was time to head home. Let me tell you... swiping a debit card has never felt so exhausting. We got home and started right away. The trailer arose the obstacle of 1/4 inch water in some places of it. It took a little time getting the water out and the surface close to dry. We started the build by bolting 2x6s to the walls of the trailer to begin the subfloor. Almost took my bicep out by hitting it right on the corner of the steel frame. D: Next was nailing 34 brackets (4 nails each) onto the wood we had just bolted to the frame. Luckily my dad didn't have me help much on that. Next was putting 17 2x6s into those brackets all precut to fit. We sadly ran out of screw and time due to lack of sunlight. We didn't get all that we wanted done today but we accomplished a lot. With my dad and I both working full time jobs l, my home won't be built in a short time. It will be a long project. But it's so fun and exciting to finally have it started. Our next plan is to finish the subfloor and begin the main structure.
So this was the first large purchase towards my tiny home. It doesn't look like much but it is one of the most important things. This 24 ft trailer will be the base for my little home. And since it is on wheels I will be able to take it where I please. :) The next step will be sub-flooring and basic structure.
Week 1:
Who would have thought that I would ever be able to say that I am building my own home?! The excitement is overflowing as my dad and I begin this crazy adventure to build myself my own tiny home. You must think I’m some sort or crazy… Right?! A tiny home? How could anyone want to live in something as small as 200 sq ft?! Where will all your stuff go? You’re going to have to give up a lot. Yes. I know this will not be easy. It will be hard. But this will be the most fun and wild experience. And I will be able to say that it’s MINE. My idea from the ground up. Not many people get the pleasure of that. While I may be sacrificing a lot to go little. It will make me appreciate the finer things in life… Along with the smaller. Follow me on this adventure as I build my home. I’m excited to be able to share this with the world.
