You Tore Out My Heart - Tiny Little Houses 

Tiny Little Houses is a relatively unknown band, originating from Melbourne, Australia with a small discography, releasing their first single album - You Tore My Heart Out - in late October. Therefore, you would think that they’d be experimental, stark and a little bit all over the place with their first debut tracks. But their sound is so precise and fitting, it’s like listening to a mature band that has hit their stride with a sophomore album. Though the single only supplies four taster tracks, they are all fantastic.

You Tore Out My Heart is definitely about heartbreak (the title says it all), but it isn’t cliché. The album starts off with the nihilistic anthem Soon We Won’t Exist. Through appropriately juxtaposed pessimistic lyrics and a cheerful rhythm and melody, the song is the perfect introduction to this album. It doesn’t throw you straight into the awful, chest-deep shit feeling of being heartbroken but what it does do is highlight those first couple of days after the disintegration of a relationship, where you feel like nothing matters and everything’s a joke. Then Easy – the album’s standout song – begins to play. A lo-fi mix between Modest Mouse and early Tegan and Sara, Easy is catchy, but exposed. It is surprisingly rational, unlike so many end-all songs about unrequited love – which makes it inherently sincere. Every Man Knows His Plague; And You Are Mine goes in the complete opposite direction, comparing the relationship to a disease. Again, nihilistic but this time, the music suits the material. The album’s namesake and concluding song is your usual stare-into-the-distance-longingly breakup track, yet the candour of the lyrics allows You Tore Out My Heart to transcend chestnut and reach enlightenment.

Sure, Tiny Little Houses does not end their album on a happy or even bittersweet note. It instead  becomes progressively more exposed and aching. The Breakup is fresh and you’re not so sweet, but a hell of a lot more bitter. At least this means we might get a full debut album filled with the rest of the story soon.

Standout tracks: All of them. You can’t go wrong.
