katniss is so funny she’s like “oh i know i care about peeta but i don’t know if i love him” then they have to sedate her every time she thinks of peeta being tortured
I'm having emotions about this scene. How vulnerable Katniss can be with Peeta, and he can be with her, how affectionate they are. It's a beautiful snapshot into their relationship and one of my favorites.
I love that in Catching fire Katniss comes to the conclusion the other tributes are trying to keep Peeta alive because they must see how amazingly perfectly wonderful he is. When in actuality that’s just her having a crush and everyone else recognizing that if Peeta gets hurt Katniss will go fully feral and unhinged and probably try to kill everyone and then herself.
lowkey, people that harp on about how “everlark is only together trauma and experiences” are so funny to me.
because on one hand, it just isn’t fair to either of them to reduce their mutual affection, admiration, and love for each other on the trauma that i am sure both of them resent. and there are too many scenes of them simply enjoying the presence of each other for no other reason than it makes them happy.
but on the other hand, the few harpers are like dancing around a truth. that katniss and peeta share experiences throughout the book that make it such that peeta is the only person who really knows this post-games katniss. and the more that they go though different experiences with each other, the more they connect and grow together.
i mean, if we were to think of it platonically, mockingjay had a whole thing going on where katniss got in trouble with gale because he was upset she was going to finnick to talk about her problems instead of him. but the main reason she was talking to finnick is because he understood what it was like to have a love one in the capitol. and she needed to be with someone who understood her.
and so of course it makes sense that katniss and peeta grew together as their shared experiences (and yes… even traumatic experiences) with each other.
and that is kind of the whole point. because while gale began the series as the person katniss could trust the most (because she had so much history and experiences with him), that relationship shifts to everlark. because katniss keeps having more experiences that tie her to peeta.
I think it's also important to note that a very important part of relationships is shared values, at least to a certain extent. I think the characters are in many situations that show their core values and it becomes clear that Katniss and Peeta's values align more than her and Gale's do. This is especially true in Mockingjay when we see Gale make decisions that would "sacrifice innocent's for the greater good" whereas Peeta's more altruistic nature would lean towards saving as many lives as possible, aligning with Katniss. Katniss and Peeta don't want to shoot first and only kill out of necessity. Gale kills out of prevention, not allowing the enemy a chance to surrender.
I think it's also important to note that in the beginning of the books, Katniss talks about how maybe one day she could love Gale and see him that way, but she's never known enough safety to let herself feel anything romantic towards him. But in that same vein, Katniss truly falls in love with Peeta in the arena of the 75th games. It's where she describes the first kiss that's ever made her feel anything. Meaning, she says she can't let herself think that way about Gale for a lack of safety but can't help thinking about Peeta that way while in unsafe situations.
She also states in the books that Gale has too much fire fueled by hatred, while Peeta is peace and sunlight. I don't think that had Katniss ended up with Gale, she would ever be able to truly heal and know peace. She would never feel understood with him the way she does with Peeta. His softness and understanding is what heals her. They aren't just trauma bonded or forced together, they are exactly who the other needs them to be without compromising who they are.
TLDR: Peeta has the softness, comfort, and understanding that Katniss has always needed and she has the strength and understanding that he needs. Gale was only ever an option that Katniss would have had to settle for, but he would never be what she needs or a soft place to land.
The love triangle was never intended to be the center of the story, but as a way to showcase Katniss' values and healing, imho. A commentary on the morals of war.

Moon Knight S01E01 The Goldfish Problem
moon knight is not realistic because if oscar isaac stood me up on a date then called me back two days later i’d simply haul ass and meet him. you’re right babe it IS friday that’s on me.
I'm back on my Loki bullshit so here's a short list of song lyrics that make me think of him
You know I left a part of me back in New York/You know the hero died, so what's the movie for?/You know it still hurts underneath my scars from when they pulled me apart/You knew the password so I let you in the door/You knew you won, so what's the point of keeping score?/You know it still hurts underneath my scars from when they pulled me apart but what you did was just as dark/Darling, this was just as hard
- Hoax, Taylor Swift
Then there's the simple fact that I was born this way/In such a tout assimilation or mistakes/And don't you misjudge what I'm capable of/If I'm heir to a broken will, I'll fall/And I won't want to get up/Just leave me down here, down where the truth won't go/No I don't want to give up/Just dust me off and I swear you never know/Look away/Shade you eyes/Don't stop
- Look Away, The Dear Hunter
(there's more to this one but I don't want to put the whole song. You should check it out though)
But it wasn't long before I felt nothing below me/And all of the ground I thought I'd gained taken away/I thought I was strong, not strong enough; my mettle was bending/Foolish plans kisses foolish hearts goodbye
- Ouroboros, The Dear Hunter
(again, there's more to this one, check it out)
You blamed it all on your kids/We were young, we were innocent/You told me a lie, fuck you for that/Fuck all your pride and fuck all your prayers and/All this time I waited like a fool
- Leader of the Landslide, The Lumineers
From the destruction, out of the flame/You need a villain, give me a name
- Salt and the Sea, The Lumineers
Hold the line/Do you fight for pride or glory?/Do you hold your scars close to your heart?/Fall behind/Who will love to tell your story?/You were taught to leave no man behind
- Backbone, Kaleo
As usual, if you use any of this as inspiration for anything, please let me know! I'd be happy to see what you make!
Edit: I forgot one!
And at the trial, they'll be no jury/And all the dead are gonna play witness/Its not too late to say you're sorry/But it's too late to truly mean it
- Dear Dictator, Saint Motel
Tom Hiddleston in Thor (2011) dir. by Kenneth Branagh
"From the destruction, out of the flame
You need a villain, give me a name"
- The Lumineers, Salt and the Sea
“The revelation of Loki’s lineage that he was adopted… you see this extraordinary vulnerability in him, which gives way to anger, and rage, and self-disgust, and confusion. And then all of those things harden to what becomes his malevolence.” — Tom Hiddleston
