castiel watched in utter confusion. this was not the reaction he’d been expecting, and the longer the behaviour went on, the more he began to realise that she hadn’t been lying. it seemed she truly didn’t know. how she didn’t know, he couldn’t fathom, but he was fairly certain this wasn’t how someone who’d been caught in a lie would react. for a moment, he considered simply flying away with a flutter of wings and leaving her to deal with this alone, but something told him he shouldn’t. this woman felt important for a reason. “ um, ” he spoke, feeling extremely awkward and standing completely still. “ are you alright? ”

emma would feel embarrassed later. she had managed to avoid a panic attack as bad as this one for awhile. she knew that she was shaking like crazy and didn’t really expect him to stick around. she’d been dealing with her panic attacks since she was a child. she tried to regulate her breathing and fight her way through the terrible memories. her eyes opened when she heard his voice and shook her head. “i...can’t breathe,” she gasped.

“ hey, em! ” jack beamed, seeing his sister and walking towards her. he folded his legs beneath himself as he took a seat next to her, looking over her shoulder at what she was drawing. a big grin formed on his face at what he saw. it was beautiful, like all of her artwork, but this one was extra special. “ it’s me! it looks just like me. ”

emma looked up at the sound of her name and gave her brother a beaming smile. one that usually ended up being reserved for just him. she rested her head against him as he looked down at her sketch. she let out a giggle and nodded. “it’s a sketch of you. i’d hope it looks like you,” she teased.

emma sat down at one of her favorite trees in the park with her sketchbook. school had been exhausting and she needed some time to just decompress. she opened to the page where she was working on a sketch of jack.  ( @devilsbcrn​ )

“ and they didn’t annoy the crap out of you sometimes ? ” dean found that hard to believe, but as much as he pretended as though he and sam were at constant sibling-like war with one another, there was nothing that he wouldn’t do for the kid when it really came down to it. “ i thought it might have been, i haven’t seen anywhere else that looks even half as good. ” he nodded, though there was some relief to be found that emma thought the burgers were good. she seemed like a good judge, a good opinion to trust, for whatever reason. “ and is it a good job ? does it pay well ? ” he wasn’t sure why he wanted to know, why it concerned him at all, but he wanted to know.

emma chuckled. “not really. but some of them kind of just ignored me. foster siblings are different. but i have a foster brother i wouldn’t trade for the whole world. he’s the best,” she said with a small smile. she’d felt so alone till she’d met jack. she chuckled and nodded. “yeah we don’t really have a whole lot of variety around here,” she told him. she shrugged. “it’s okay. i only work when they really need help or i need some extra cash. i mostly work at the little art shop downtown,” she answered with a nod. she was forced to work due to her being 18 and not bringing her foster father anymore money through the government.

castiel didn’t believe a word the young woman said. “ an amazon. all female abominations who reproduce with unsuspecting human males, who’re then brutally murdered by their offspring. you’re monsters, ” he explained. although he was convinced the girl already knew of this, he assumed she was just attempting to play innocent to avoid confrontation. “ i am an angel of the lord. lying to me is foolish, particularly about something i already know the answer to. now i would like a real answer. where is your family? ”

emma froze as soon as the words left his mouth. abomination. monster. what mother would leave their child unless it was an abomination? a monster? the words rang clear in her head from all those years ago. her eyes were wide as she lost herself in the memory of that place. the foster home that had ruined her. she barely even heard his next words about being an angel and lying. she was already gone. where is your family? huh? the voice wouldn’t stop ringing in her head. she shook her head, covering her ears, her voice gone again.

“Well, why not try drinking a little tonight?” Caroline suggested, leaning over to grab another drink for the other girl. “It might help you loosen up a little. Besides, one drink won’t kill you. Just make you a little tipsy.” 

emma chewed on her lip and looked around. she wished jack was there. he’d know what to do and how to handle the situation. she, of course, didn’t have enough self conviction to say no herself. she hesitantly took the drink from the blonde. “uhm i guess not...”

“ well it’s nice to hear that it’s a generic thing, and not just my terrible luck with a sibling. ” anybody that knew dean would know that he was joking, that there wasn’t anything in the world that he wouldn’t do for his baby brother, even after all of the time that they’d spent apart recently. “ you seem to be doing just fine, now. that’s an improvement, then ? ” he could relate, given how terrible he was himself at talking about his feelings. “ what do you think of this place ? and could you recommend a good burger joint ? or is there seriously only one restaurant in this freaking town ? ”

emma let out a soft laugh and shook her head. “i’m sure you two get along better than you play it off, huh? i mean you’re brothers. i’ve had some foster siblings before,” she admitted softly. she shrugged. “i guess so,” she commented. she didn’t let herself get close to a whole lot of people. she was shy and didn’t always know how to interact with people. “it’s alright. a quiet town. but the grill is pretty much the only good place to eat. but i think their burgers are pretty good. i work there sometimes.”

The blondes eyebrows arched at the other girls comment. She looked uncomfortable, more so than anyone else she’d seen that night. “Why not? It’s free alcohol. If you’re worried about the underage drinking thing don’t be. The police always give leniency when it’s these kind of events. Besides, you never know, you might find a cute guy.”

emma shrunk back slightly and shrugged. “i’m not really much of a drinker,” she answered, feeling awkward. she fiddled the sleeves of her sweatshirt. “it’s not so much that. i just haven’t ever had anything to drink. oh i doubt that will happen, either.”

castiel was quickly beginning to realise that mystic falls was infested with monstrous beings. he could take out a handful alone, but not half the town. he’d need backup, ideally, but it would be foolish to bring more angels here, given that he was trapped. there was no point in bringing an entire army of angels if they couldn’t leave. if anything, it would be foolish. they could allow a small number of humans to die at the hands and teeth of the monsters if it meant the angels were free to do more good. the bigger picture was more important. for now, though, castiel was stuck here. 

“ what is an amazon doing in mystic falls alone? ” he asked as he approached the young woman, voice cold and harsh. amazons travelled in groups, never alone. it didn’t make any sense. yet he hadn’t seen any others, so far. plenty of other creatures, but none of this girl’s species. “ where is your family? ”

emma hadn’t always lived in mystic falls but she had lived there for several years now. since the latest in the long line of foster homes resided in the small town. she had no idea what went bump in the night around her. she didn’t usually get to go out after dark. her foster father was very strict with what she could and couldn’t do. even if she was 18. 

emma had been sitting on a rock, watching the bonfire when she heard someone speak. she looked up and frowned at the cold tone the man spoke to her with, flinching slightly out of habit. “a what?” she asked with a slight squeak, confused. she shook her head, shifting awkwardly under his gaze. “i don’t have one. i’m an orphan.”

“it’s kind of weird, isn’t it? all the parties in the woods. it’s like people are begging to be a cautionary tale.” or maybe it was just her, maybe other people didn’t know about the supernatural so they had no idea of the constant dangers around them. “but to each their own i guess, the comet should be pretty nice to see though.” allison said, looking over to the other then. “have you been to many parties like this?”

emma looked over with big green eyes at the other girl. “like the start of a horror movie,” she agreed. she hadn’t thought about it until then but with all of them spread out in the woods, that wouldn’t be a big stretch. emma fiddled shyly with her sleeves and shook her head. “not really. i’m not much of a party girl,” she admitted.

Caroline had expected the night of the comet to be a busy one, but it seemed like the entire town’s population and more were out in the forest waiting for the comet to appear. The smell of the bonfire mixed with noise from the hustle and bustle of people had Caroline feeling right at home, a small smile on her lips. Of course, she wouldn’t probably be feeling a little happier if she’d worn tights with her dress. Bare legs combined with the chill of the night was not exactly ideal, but the outfit had already attracted a few glances, something that fuelled the young blonde’s ego. 

Making her way towards the excess of alcohol she was quick to take one of the red cups, filling it with whatever the hell was in the keg that some of the guys had brought.

“You know what? I am going to drink until someone is hot enough to makeout with.” she decided out loud to no one in particular, flicking her hair back as she looked around the crowds, deep in thought.

emma wasn’t necessarily comfortable in big crowds but she had wanted to see the comet. she wasn’t like some of the others in town who had dressed up for the event - she stuck with what was comfortable which happened to be jeans and a cropped hoodie. she was playing with the sleeves of the hoodie as she wandered around the festival. she turned when she heard the voice of caroline. she, of course, knew who caroline was but she didn’t really interact much with her fellow senior. “i don’t think i’m going to drink,” she said softly.

Sam walked around the town square, slightly curious as to why there were so many people out and about during the night. He probably missed the memo. “Oh, hey. Do you happen to know what’s going on?” He asked the person nearest to him, hoping that they were a local. He gestured to everyone else and noticed..candles. It seemed weird. 

emma had heard about the comet before. she’d been in mystic falls for awhile now and had heard about most of their town traditions. she chewed on her lip as she wandered around on her own. it was actually a miracle that her foster father let her come out this late. emma turned when she heard a voice behind her. her eyes widened slightly as she looked up at the very tall guy. “oh uhm, it’s the comet festival. there’s a comet that comes only once like every 140 years or something.”

“ i think so. i mean he gets on my nerves sometimes, but that’s just normal. and god knows i get on his last nerve sometimes too. but we’re always looking out for one another. ” and dean would one hundred percent be dead in the ground somewhere ( with no magical angel resurrections this time ) if it wasn’t for sam, that much was just a fact. “ he is, yeah i’m the big brother. i sort of raised him, too. if i’m being honest. ” but he’d never viewed it as a burden, even now as he was older and realised that it should never have been down to him in the first place. “ well it’s good to get it out. ” hypocritical, given that he never followed that advice himself, but for some reason he felt responsible for the girl, despite having just met her. “ so what, you been here your whole life then ? ”

emma chuckled and nodded. “i’ve heard that about siblings,” she replied. “it sounds nice though. you kind of have a big brother vibe going on,” she told him with a small smile. maybe that was why she felt strangely comfortable with him. it was honestly freaking her out how comfortable she was. she blushed and nodded. “i guess so. i’m not really good at that,” she said honestly. she shook her head. “a lot but no i’ve been in foster homes in other towns growing up and an orphanage.”

“  yeah. he’s around here somewhere. ” there used to be a time where dean would have refused to let sammy out of his sight, especially in a situation as foreign and screwed up as this, and especially with heaven’s little soldiers on their asses about the damn apocalypse that they had started, but he knew that his little brother could take care of himself. “ hey - don’t worry about it. we all got crap we gotta deal with, and for some people talking about it makes it easier. ” not in dean’s personal case, because never once had he willingly discussed something that had been bothering him without somebody else bugging him about it first, but not everyone was as messed up as him. “ you know your dad ? “

“that’s cool. to have a brother. at least i think so. but i’ve been by myself,” she replied. “so he’s younger than you, then?” she asked curiously. she’d always been curious about siblings. really about having a family in general. she never really felt like she was a part of any of the foster families she’d been a part of. she shrugged. “i don’t usually talk about it. i don’t...i don’t usually talk this much at all,” she said, muttering mostly to herself. she shook her head. “no. i don’t know any of my blood family. i’m a foster kid.”

castiel had been wandering mystic falls aimlessly. he wasn’t used to this, being trapped in a town by a spell that could apparently contain even angels, and the other angels were offering him no assistance. they had more important issues to focus on. like the apocalypse. like lucifer. one measly angel who couldn’t even follow commands correctly wasn’t particularly high on their list of priorities. so he didn’t really know what else to do with himself. there was only so much he and dean could research.

his eyes narrowed as he came across the young woman, frowning deeply. he didn’t know her name, had never even seen her before, and yet he knew she was important. “ hello, ” he greeted, eyes locked on her as he analysed her further, head tilted to the side. “ you’re a relative of dean winchester. ”

emma had never known who her blood family was. she’d been dropped off at a hospital and they were never heard from again. so when someone approached her and told her she was was related to someone, she blinked in confusion. “uhm, hi?” she said, chewing on her lips as green eyes met blue. “i’m sorry, who? i don’t know any of my relatives,” she said with blushed cheeks.

“you’re welcome. sorry, i didn’t mean to pry i just saw it and you, and well yeah.” she said, shrugging lightly. the girl sitting here also was basically a welcoming treat for any supernatural beings just waiting to prey, she wasn’t going to let that happen.

she shook her head. “oh no it’s alright. i don’t mind. i mean it’s always nice to hear that my stuff looks good,” she replied shyly. she chewed on her lip awkwardly. “d-do you wanna sit down?”
