When people ask “what do blind people see,” I often hear things like “literally nothing, they don’t see black because they literally can’t see.” And that’s true…for some blind people.
However, many legally blind people do have varying degrees of remaining vision. What that looks like depends a lot on why they are blind. For example, when asked to describe her vision in 2012, Christine Hà said it was “like if you take a really hot shower and then you look into the foggy bathroom mirror, where you only see vague shapes and shadows.” Christine was not born with this level of vision; she has Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder, so she progressively lost vision later in life.
There is a wide range of answers to “what do blind people see,” so I wanted to provide just a few resources for people who are curious or want to write a blind character with some remaining vision. While looking up various conditions on medical sites is a good starting point, nothing beats first-hand experience.

important points :
- note that whatever I’m writting here is usually not enough, more research is welcome
- this is to represent Muslims in a better way than media does, and more accurately, do not use this negatively
- avoid harmful and wrong stereotypes like depicting characters as terrorists, unintelligent, uncivilized and so and so. Please
- not all Muslims are Arabs and not all Arabs are Muslims
- the Muslim community is very diverse so don’t limit yourself to Muslim countries, it is also important to note that each has a unique experience and so I’ll just stick to the basics
- following religion is more like a spectrum and many factors and views come into effect, so not all that I’m writing is followed by everyone, and some do things differently.
- everyone’s relationship with faith is personal and important, if you’re not Muslim I’d highly advice not to discuss this in your story. Include Muslim characters that’s okay but don’t delve into faith
- please remember to support Muslim voices as well and not just use them as characters in stories.
-finally, thank you for putting in the care to write Muslim characters.
the basics (under cut)
prayer :
- muslims usually pray 5 times a day. the fajir prayer is before sunrise, then comes Dhur which is at noon, Asir is afternoon and Maghrib is at sunset. Then finally comes Isha which is at night but before 12 am ( isha means dinner so think of it as around the time for Dinner )
- before praying, we need to do Wudu which is washing our face, arms, and legs In a specific routine. This wudu is broken by some things and must be redone before aproaching prayer such as sleeping, using the toilet, uh. Basically discharging.
- in case there is no water, Muslims would perform taiamum which is done with sand.
- it’s important to note that whilst having periods, women won’t pray as it breaks the wudu.
- you rolled out a sajada which is like a little carpet and it’s aimed at where Kaaba would be.
- no one is allowed to cross infront of you while praying ( kids and animals are okay because they don’t know but like, generally ) it’s like you’re standing infront of Allah ( God )
- each prayer differs by the number of rakaat if you want to get specific, but you’d probably just need to know about the movements themselves.
- after prayer, some Muslims would raise their palms up for Dua, it’s asking for what they want maybe health or wellness or heaven and so and so. It’s about having a conversation with Allah.
- kids usually start to learn to pray at 7 and then stick to it at 10.
- prayers can be done both at home, outside, and in the mosque.
- prayers can be done alone or in groups (preferable) . in the case of a group prayer, an Imam, the person who calls for prayer would usually lead, but it’s mostly choosing the person who had memorized the most of the Quran And oldest. ( mostly men unless all of the group are women )
- in a mosque, women and men pray separately but at home, families can pray together.
- while there are 5 prayers, not everyone prays all of the five, and some people would pray more than five and that’s okay ( the extra prayers are after sunrise but before dhur, and between isha and fajir )
dua or Athkar
- dua Isn’t just reserved for prayer, it can be done anytime and anywhere, a famous example is students doing it when they’re approaching an example , or saying it to someone when they have a baby and so.
- there is also Athkar which people love to say through the day. Some for morning, for waking up, for night and for going to sleep, for when they’re sad or when they’re happy, when they’re going out and coming back home. there are many but not everyone reads them or does all of them.
Quraan:
- Quran is the book of Islam, it’s the word of Allah that was sent to his massenger prophet Muhammad and it’s sacred. it holds stories and guidance about Islam.
- just like prayer, Muslims can’t touch it unless they have Wudu.
- note, with the new technology, reading it on your screen doesn’t require wudu.
Juma :
- juma is Friday, and the name comes from an Arabic word that means meeting. It’s usually a day for families to meet and visit each other but it’s also a day of worship.
- Muslim men would go to the mosque, if they can, to perform prayer, but first the imam would give a lecture about any topic deemed important.
- Muslim women can go too but it’s by choice.
relationships :
- in the context of Islam, interacting with someone of the other gender should be limited, but many would . What’s the word? Not stick to it much.
- while it‘s not… accepted much? some Muslims do date but the very wrong thing would be sleeping with someone or getting intimate before marriage.
- when it comes to marriage, it’s done through first asking the parents of the bride for her hand. They must gain her aproval too and her parents and then comes several optional steps before the wedding where the couple would get to know each other. lastly the wedding.
-interfaith marriage is allowed in away. A Muslim man can marry a woman of an abrahamic religion, but a Muslim woman can only Mary as Muslim man ( because kids would usually take upon their dad, even in papers )
- I found the book “ the map of salt and stars “ depict these points the best i also highly recommend it
Ramadan and Islamic holidays :
- Ramadan is a month of fasting. Muslims would fast from sunrise till sunset for 28 or 29 days. The day of which the month starts and ends in is determined by the shape of the moon as Islam follows lunar years.
- Eid El-Fitir comes after Ramadan, after the last day it’s three days where families meat and make food to give around. it’s a celebration. many families have a tradition of giving kids Eidya which is basically money.
- Eid Al-Adha comes next and in it families would sacrifice a lamb or a goat. when I say sacrifice it’s about cooking it and making food to give to your family and your neighborhood and just, eat together.
islamic funeral :
- when a Muslim dies, they are usually washed up by their family or at by people who give that service.
- after washing, their bodies are wrapped in a white cloth called Kafan, and they’re laid down in the mosque as the imam and people pray a specific prayer for them.
- then the men would bury them.
Haram and halal:
- haram means forbidden and halal is allowed.
- pork and certain types of meat are haram.
- halal chicken and meat should be slaughtered in an islamic way or otherwise they’re haram. Adding to that, fish is halal no matter how you cut it.
- things like wine and beer and just alchoholic beverages in general are haram.
Hygiene :
hygiene is very important in islamic culture ( see : wudu ) and highly regarded as important
When it comes to using toilets , Muslims don’t use paper towels but rather wash up using a water hose that’s usually around in muslim countries
If not available, some would bring wet tissue or water along
It’s always advisable to take through showers on fridays and after periods
Along with showering, many use musk or oud behind the ears to add a nice soft fregnance
