By: Leslie Ludy Over the years I’ve seen many young Christians attempt to build a God-honoring relationship without a vibrant walk with Christ backing it up. Every time, it falls apart. Without an active, daily, living, breathing, passionate relationship with Christ, it’s nothing more than human wisdom and human effort attempting to reach the heights of Heavenly romance. Without the power of Christ’s Spirit, it simply can’t be done. When I think about the early days of my love story with Eric, I don’t just remember the wonder of falling in love and the beauty of discovering Eric’s heart. Rather, I vividly remember falling in love with Jesus Christ and basking in the beauty of a romance with Him – a romance that was enhanced, not diminished, by my love story with Eric. When my relationship with Eric began, everyone expected us to start living out the typical “boyfriend/girlfriend” pattern – becoming completely preoccupied with each other, spending every waking moment of our spare time together, expressing our physical affection for each other, and letting the focus of our thoughts and conversation be about our passionate feelings for each other. But we knew that God wanted something different for us. He wanted to remain at the center of our relationship – not just in theory, but in reality. We realized that if we started focusing on our feelings for each other rather than our mutual passion for Christ, we would push Him to the outside of our romance. So we entrusted our emotions to God. We asked Him to guard our hearts and not unlock passion for each other until the proper time. In the meantime, we agreed to keep our conversation, focus, and energy centered upon Jesus Christ and not each other. To most people, it seemed strange. Here we were, a young couple in a serious relationship with the intention of getting married someday – and we didn’t even act like we were dating. We didn’t hold hands. We didn’t kiss. We didn’t sit close together on the couch and whisper into each other’s ear. We didn’t have long, ardent phone conversations. We didn’t talk about our feelings for each other. I stand amazed at this. There is nothing God cant do! He is Alagbara, the Greatest one. -------------------------------------- So when you come before Him and He says, "Ask, what would you have me do for you." He is not saying, "What do you think I can do for you?" No. He's giving you a blank check. ASK FOR WHATEVER YOU DESIRE. I once read in a book that, "If you ask the earth to give you a penny, it will give it to you. And if you ask it for millions of money (choose your favorite currency), it would also give it to you." [Paraphrased] That's just the earth disbursing its magnanimous creative force... How much more the Almighty God; the President of the universe. ------------------------------------------ Now here is the interesting part. When a beggar seeks you out, you dont get stretched at all by his need because all he needs is a mite. So swiftly (for those with the Church heart), you give it to him. That's Mickey Mouse; so easy and fast. But imagine the beggar asking you for a million naira. Imagine your reaction too! That's like asking for the moon. Its pretty difficult or impossible to oblige. --------------------------------------------- But with God, to supply 1 kobo and 1 million naira to any one, me or you requires the same effort as in, He would grant both request effortlessly. Mr. I Hate Fairy Tales “You’re right…no one likes to fail, but no matter what any of us guys do we will all do exactly that.” A guy says from behind his saddened, but stern eyes. He continues to convey how he feels that no matter how hard a guy tries, it won’t be good enough in the end any how. “I blame it on the fairy tales and romantic comedies,” He says. “There’s knights in shining armor, the biggest engagement rings ever, and guys that always know what to say.” This strikes you a bit oddly. You have put numerous amounts of hours lamenting how media has affected the perception of the ideal beauty and the pressures you have likely felt with all of the super models on TV, yet it never really dawned on you how that same thing might be occurring for guys. What do fairy tales and romantic comedies say about guys? They should always dress nice, have a nice home (a horse and carriage is a nice perk), never be grumpy, be the perfect balance of sensitive and masculine, able to beat up 1 to 40 guys all by himself if need be, and, oh yes, he must always leave the toilet seat down, because he is the most thoughtful and caring man alive. Mr. I Hate Fairy Tales backs this up with a personal story of how he once bought his ex 12 roses. However, she was hurt, because he did not get her lilies. She felt he should know her better than that, because lilies were her favorite flower…not roses. Many examples followed, but the final conclusion was that he did not feel that getting into a relationship would benefit him. Have you ever been told that your need to get married should'nt be your number 1 priority in life? Yes it shouldn't. Number 1 should be to love God and serve Him with the whole of your heart. Mr. Not Financially Set Another guy speaks up and points out that his main reason for not being active in the relationship scene was that he felt he needed to be financially set before he could seriously commit to a woman. He begins to express how his parents struggled financially and how it put a lot of stress on their marriage. He would simply rather not set himself up to fail. If he could become financially secure, then he would feel much more at ease about being with a woman. In addition to this, he opens up and reveals that he believes most women want this. He expresses his insecurity that even though he has a decent job while still in grad school, that he still feels inept as a man because he could not support a woman even if he wanted to. “To pursue a woman, a guy has to be a man. He has to feel like a man. If not, what does he really have to offer?” Mr. Doomsday After the money talk subsided a man blurted out, “I don’t date simply because I’m not any good at it!” This guy was very straightforward and honest about the fact that he would rather put time into things he knew he was good at. He laid out a list of reasons why romance was simply not in his blood. His parents and many other relatives got married only to divorce in the end. His own relationships always ended in pain, and he was much better at so many other areas of his life. Why endure the heartache and waste his and some poor girl's time by starting something that most likely wouldn’t work out anyway? After his initial premise for singlehood ended, he got quiet.
