ZAEED // masscni
He didn’t spend much time in the mess area. Like most of the other residents of the SR-2′s engineering deck, he wasn’t much of a team player, and thus far Mess Sergeant Gardner hadn’t made anything better than what he could put together himself in the shitty pre-fabricator he kept under his surveillance station. He got company, sometimes - Shepard came by a lot, was always keen to listen for a bit, and that Chambers girl had been pretty determined for awhile, although he got the impression that he’d finally scared her off with that one about the Turian recruit whose head had been pulped by a sniper on Taetus. He didn’t mind it - liked it, even, but there was a reason he had access to ship-wide surveillance in the first place, and there was a reason he didn’t eat in the mess; because he was a paranoid son of a bitch, and the SR-2 was too squeaky-clean for him to ever feel safe without his back to a wall in a room he knew forward and back.
He didn’t spot her on the cams coming down - might have glanced away at just the wrong moment - and another knife hit the makeshift dartboard across the cargo compartment dead center just as the door slid open. Not Shepard - that new one, what the hell was her name? Silence. No, Quiet, that was it - merc handle if he’d ever heard one. Young, just a little more dressed than Jack on any given day - hell of a shot with a rifle, way he’d heard it. And she’d brought coffee, apparently - good stuff. There wasn’t much left of his olfactory nerves but a couple of implants and a nasty lump of scar tissue, but he had the smell of synthesized coffee pinged, and that sure as hell wasn’t it.
Probably said something about him that his first impulse was to be suspicious. Said something else that he took the cup anyway. If he was going to die from poison laced into real coffee, so fucking be it.
“Hell of a first impression you’re makin’, sweetheart.” It was good. He usually added liquor, but you didn’t blaspheme a drink like this with alcohol unless you were some kind of goddamn heathen. “Stuff must’ve cost a fortune - gonna tell me what I did to earn a cut of the take?”
Quiet watched him with slow blinking eyes, that long pause between unnatural, unnerving to most. She was waiting, careful to drink from her cup at the same exact moment as him, her eyes locked on Zaeed’s, though giving an unfair favoritism to the cybernetic implant. She wondered which one saw her clearer.
The cups lowered at the same time, and with it the sniper’s posture changed, suddenly relaxing and taking time to stare out the view window by the compactor. At the great void beyond. Another strange piece of the ritual, and with it done she sheds it’s skin like a snake in the desert.
She’s surprised, though she doesn’t show it. On the ride down the elevator she had considered a lot of scenarios, most of which involved her favorite coffee cup shattered to pieces as he slammed her into a wall, or having to have yet another uncomfortable meeting with Chakwas as she pulled the serrated combat blade Zaeed kept on his hip from her shoulder. She pegged him wrong, he did know how to control those instincts. Better than she did.
His questioned stopped her pointless cross examination. He had accepted the coffee, liked it even, mission accomplished. A loose shrug her way of answering, before nodding her head toward the ancient rifle on the table. Quiet appreciated a well cared for weapon, her own sniper rifle was an analogue hold over from the old days, the only modification the scope. It didn’t even use heat sinks. Zaeed’s affection for the weapon was obvious, even from an outside view. She admired that.
Admired him. Zaeed was a legend, even to her numb ears. And now here he was, attempting to save the galaxy and make a profit doing it. Who wouldn’t admire that ?
You? What could one more splash of blood mean to you?

There are moments that press on you forever, many are firsts, most are lasts. But this? This is horror, the realization of all she had followed and believed in was a clever lie. Boss, her boss, wasn’t him. The man she choked against the bed, waiting with the pointed focus of a bullet fired from a gun, watching it’s own destruction become reality. Just a facsimile, a knock off, not even a clone but a patch job. Disposable.
Her throat burns, ripped and raw, the sutures that let her breathe beyond this moment screaming, but the burn was over her body, like the flames that pitched her into this phantom unlife. All a big, beautiful, fucking lie.
She’d laugh if her destroyed larynx would let her, instead she wheezes, a low and terrible rattle before standing, spine rigid and at attention. If the man was willing to risk dropping the act now, let this little play fall by the wayside, she would listen with the dutiful mind of a soldier, a soldier who had been played and beaten.

you know what trope pisses me off the most? when the protag is pointing a gun at somebody and they’re like “you won’t do it. you’re too good” and the person holding the gun is like oh shit i am and they slowly lower the gun while the other person laughs. WHAT THE FUCK. if i were there, and somebody told me “you won’t do it” i would immediately shoot them dead without hesitating. who are you to tell me what i wont do. musty bitch
Quiet sits precariously, her booted feet overhanging the side of the large platform as she stares out to sea. No bars, or railings, just the sure drop to a sure and slow death below. The whispering breeze off the choppy white waves a salty blessing in a fucked world of bullets and blood. A small smile on her lips as she rests her chin on interlaced hands. What strange peace in never ending war, a moment to breathe.
With a stretch she waves to the boy, gesturing to a pair of canned drinks that she set beside herself, but refuses to turn her head from the setting sun. She wants to see the final light of day go out.
@ciircumserpent
Ritual, after so long she sees it everywhere. The way some one holds a gun, adjusts their stance, removing armor in the same order. Every species, every walk of life, dominated by tiny rituals. She is no different, despite the slow and lightyears beneath her boots some rituals never change.
Today’s ritual is coffee. Slow brewed in an old machine while she fusses over it like an overbearing parent. Real beans leave residue like gunpowder on her fingertips. It doesn’t matter that they haven’t used the stuff for centuries now, she remembers the grit.
“ Ahn.”
Two cups. No cream, no sugar, pure and black like whatever remained of her insides, with the smell of old world. Ritual. She hands the cup over, and she waits.
@masscni
Howling, screaming through the trees like the voice stolen from her throat but, more raw, more painful, more primal. Quiet’s shoulders tense, the hand around her rifle protectively tightening to bring it closer to her chest. The sound shatters, breaks off into the trees. Whatever was here it isn’t friendly, as mad sobbing collides with the thudding footfalls of something big, something very big.
What in the hell was going on here?

I’m in love with my anger / my war-won body / tense and vicious.

What do you think of Commander Miller, Quiet?
Miller is…troublesome. Loud, angry, like an injured peacock, all noise and nipping, biting at the hand that comes nearest. Driven too, like a mad dog and just as scared. He’d lost so much, the idea of rebuilding must have both been retaliation and a desperate act to get a piece of himself back. It never works.
She doesn’t understand it but she knows things are different, from the photos she saw before, from the way Miller’s body moves around herself, and Venom. His jaw constantly tense and ready to snarl. It’s bravado, she learned that quickly. If he wanted her dead he’d do it, much as he played the cripple Miller was not helpless - not by any means. She’s seen for herself he can be as conniving and clever as Ocelot when the need arises, but he doesn‘t. She lives and breathes because bravado only carries so far, sometimes you have to make a deal with the devil inside yourself to reclaim what is taken from you.
But this isn’t why he’s troublesome. It’s not his angry words, the way he spits bitch and traitor at her, the amount of times he’s called for her death. The way he is waiting for the slightest justifiable provocation to throw her into the sea and tell her to swim for shore before her skin burns.
No. The trouble is she can’t bring herself to hate him.
He wants her to, wants her to hate him enough that maybe she’ll do something stupid and get herself killed, or maybe just so he won’t have one more person to worry about. One soul can only carry so much weight. And she wanted to hate him, from the first moment he snarled and spit in her face, raising the gun of his men, foaming and slavering and hungry for the kill. For Revenger.
So Kazuhira Miller is troublesome, and Quiet, while she doesn’t know why, she knows he won’t give her a chance to find out.
She should kick the crutch out from under him. Shove his face to the metal and polystyrene floor and listen to him rattle curses, spit bitch at her like a mongrel waiting to be kicked. Punch his pretty white teeth out, smash his sunglasses beneath her boot. She should at the very least break his jaw so he’d shut the hell up for once.
She does none of these things. Her tense body thrusts forward, forces herself in his line of sight, like the eye sore most of the dogs thought her to be.
She smiles as she leans against the rail, sun warmed metal tastes like grit , but the ocean breeze smells crisp and salty. Another day is passing to death to be born anew. Maybe they came here seeking the same thing, a reminder of that rebirth to carry them through.
