Do You Like Nice Things?

There's a new auction coming up at 242_Modern (or what is sometimes referred to as “Terry’s Greatest 24-Hour Worldwide Emporium On The Internet”). So much good stuff, you'll want it all. Here are 2 out of the 12 items that will be up for auction on Tuesday, April 15th. Get your bidding finger ready.

Flair Magazine (1950) was one of the most influential monthly style magazines in publishing history. It features art by Saul Steinberg, among many others; and fashion, architecture, design, and editorial. If you're not familiar with this avant-garde magazine, you should be. These are a must-have for any graphic designer. Get all 12 issues bound and in beautiful condition.

You know what else you can have? This dynamic cubist sculpture created by artist Xavier Melendez in the ‘70s. It is solid and clear, and the glass reflects the colors that surround it in whatever environment it's in, creating an ever-changing effect. That’s a very nice thing.

Re-Aiming Your Eyes (And Ears)

Just watch the opening sequence from the Oscar-winning doc 20 Feet From Stardom here. The sequence, inspired by artist John Baldessari, was designed using colored dots on vintage album covers, publicity photos, and archival stills paired with Lou Reed's iconic song "Walk on The Wild Side" for its memorable reference to black female background singers. The result of the opening images is at once funny and poignant--aiming your attention away from the lead singers to the stars in backing them up.
