Hi! This is mostly an experiment to see if keeping this blog helps me with my studies more than anything.

I am learning:

Nahuatlahtolli: classic / central puebla (at cultural center)

Arabic: msa / levantine / egyptian

I know:

English (level C1 i think?)

Spanish (Mother language)

French (B1, supposedly)

Nahuatl Central Puebla (A1)

I want to learn languages too: a) get my hands into more knowdlege and resources about life, the universe, and everything. b) Make friends and relationships and stuff. c) Translate! I recently started doing more translations and is a beautifull art, want to do more.

I love when Arabic loanwords get incorporated into other languages and they keep the al- suffix. I'm studying the gebra. It's a real the batross around my neck.

You know for a studio named after an Arabic word, studio Ghibli really never bothered to make any Arabic-influenced stories or characters.

it's named after an italian plane that was used to defend italian colonial possessions, the equivalent of naming a studio after an apache or black hawk helicopter. miyazaki's love of planes is influenced by his family manufacturing aircraft parts for imperial japan when he was a child.

I don't wanna hear one more anglophone complaining that other languages "aren't written how they're pronounced", your language has almost no consistent pronunciation rules and the few there are were obviously written by the devil himself to spite all the real people (non anglophones)

This argument in these tags I feel like reifies English's uniqueness. Like all languages are influenced by other languages to various degrees (I don't see English speakers calling Spanish Latin and Arabic in a trenchcoat for example), English is not unique in that it has imported large amount of its vocabulary from other languages across its history

But anyways this argument is the same as US being millions of countries in a trenchcoat or an "special melting pot of different cultures" which is just such us American excepcionalism/chauvinism, because is just a way for them to justify their culture is the best and therefore justify the existence of the great us empire. Lending the rest of the world into a bunch of monoculture states rather a tapestry of intricate human connections of different cultures.

repeating myself from the comments here but I think this atrophy is in part due to the fact that vampires are now seen in genre culture (derogatory) to Be About Queer People, when they are in fact an extremely flexible literary device that can be About many things, but especially rape.

so because Vampires Are Queer Now, writers are either morally against making that conflation with sexual violence, or are afraid of being read in bad faith if they do anything else with the idea. which turns both vampires as symbols and the conversation around them into sludge.

Heeeey, Tagalog-speaking followers, how do you translate "That's when I'll do it"? I was trying to say something to my parents, but I ended up saying "That's where I'll do it" ("doon ko gagawin") which caused kind of a funny misunderstanding.
