According to @vorchagirl, this was only ever posted on ff.net. So, here it is on AO3. I wrote this back in 2014, after Buffalo - where I live - received record breaking snow (again) and snowed me in. (You can look into Buffalo Snowvember if you're curious.) Anyway... here's the synopsis. Hope you like it!

Admiral Jess Shepard is in Vancouver with the rest of Alliance Brass to commemorate the end of the Reaper War. The Council is in town, too. With a snow storm on the way, and all travel banned, Shepard will have to accept help – and shelter – from the last person she wants to, the man who broke her heart and left her alone to fight the Reapers - Kaidan Alenko. (Rated M for a reason)

“You don’t have to say it, Hazel. I know, and I love you, so much more,” he offered her a smile, and she took a deep breath, letting it out slowly before lifting herself and kissing him lightly. She returned to his chest, sleep already pulling at the edges of her consciousness. She felt his hand running over her side and hip, the gentle caress the last thing she remembered before sleep took her.

Let It Rain

I wish I was better at titles. Forgive this one. Title is subject to change but we’ll go with this for now.

This is my piece for @meflashfanwork‘s November theme: Rain. It’s a teenage Sloan Shepard (see: The Reason) on Mindoir, a few months before the raid. It’s … bittersweet because if you’ve read the Reason, or know the colonist backstory you know what happens… anyway… enjoy. 

It smelled like rain.

The windows of their prefab home were open and the breeze, warmed by the early spring sun, teased the curtains before brushing over Sloan’s unblemished cheek. She set her book down and turned her face to the open window. A smile played on her lips. The scent of dinner drifted into the room. Lightning flashed overhead.

She stood quickly, the chair scraping the floor, before heading out to their covered porch. She pulled a chair under cover and sat, pulling her knees to her chest. She adjusted the skirt of her yellow sundress over her knees before she wrapped her arms around her legs. Her long dark chocolate hair spilled over her back in a gentle curl. Her brilliant blue eyes reflected the storm as she watched it brewing overhead.

It didn’t rain much on Mindoir, but when it did, it poured. She inhaled deeply. The scent of electricity danced and her skin tingled with the energy. She’d been showing signs of biotics for years, but her parents hesitated in contacting the authorities. She had the suspicion they’d take her away. Send her to some Alliance facility. Gargaron Station? Was that place even still open? She was fairly sure she’d heard something about an incident there.

I saw a comment by someone on reddit who said they no longer comment on any fanfiction because of the risk of it being AI and ... that just seems like such a cop out to me, not to mention incredibly cruel to authors.

Please please please do not stop commenting on all fics or interacting with authors because you are worried about things being AI. The risk is slim, and the damage you do to authors by doing this is awful.

Writers put so much effort into their fics. For people to openly admit they still read and consume these fics, but choose not to comment on anything because of the possibility of someone using AI for their writing is incredibly selfish. You're punishing authors by doing this. You're not being moral or helpful or crusading for any useful cause - you're just hurting authors.

Ironically, by doing this, you're actually more likely to cause authors to stop writing (silence does this), and people who can't write will fill the gaps left by creating AI writing - so you're making the problem worse, not helping anyone.

If you want to support authors and writers, then SUPPORT them! Reblog work and send authors asks, leave comments and kudos, and above all don't punish people with silence.

I've been out of the fic writing game for a bit, but I can still attest that even a simple, OMG I loved this comment is enough to breathe life into a writer's muse and keep them going.

Even if you think the writer won't care about the little one sentence review you have the energy to write after reading the 3000 word chapter you just finished... trust me when I say... they will adore it and it will brighten their day more than you know.
