The Malaysian Insider mula beroperasi pada 25 Februari 2008.
– 14 Mac, 2016.

Before the lights go out on The Malaysian Insider at midnight, we say "Thank You" to our readers.
TMI started on February 25, 2008.
Today, after eight years and less than a month, we say good night to all as our owners call it a day after keeping us for 20 months.
It has been an exhilarating ride.
In our eight years, we have garnered a following of some close to three million readers a day and have become one of the top three most read news websites in the country.
The most challenging time has been over the past year when four of our editors were detained, and our website being blocked for allegedly publishing false news.
On the day we turned eight this year, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) blocked the site on grounds of "national security" over an article that quoted a source regarding evidence against the prime minister's alleged financial scandals.
Since the news earlier today about the closure, we have seen a torrent of thank you messages and well-wishes on the site and on social media.
Many readers, who have contributed articles to our site, also expressed their appreciation for giving them a platform to share their opinions and writing.
No words can express our thanks to our readers who have praised us, critiqued us and stuck with us.
We thank you for your support.
We hope our reporting has inspired Malaysians to think for themselves and strive for a better tomorrow although our site will be offline from midnight.

An accident at the headquarters of Thailand's Siam Commercial Bank, possibly caused by a fire retardant chemical, has killed eight people, the bank said today.
The accident took place late yesterday as contractors were working on the building's fire fighting systems.
"Gas pyrogens intended to extinguish fires opened and kept oxygen out resulting in injuries and death," the bank said.
"Eight people died as a result and seven injured people are in hospital," the bank said.
Those killed were contractors and a security guard, police said. "They were in the building for maintenance work," said Police Colonel Charoen Srisasalak.
In February 2015 a fire broke out at the sprawling SCB complex located in the north of the Thai capital Bangkok, killing one fireman.
All SCB bank branches will open as usual today, the bank said.

“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” – George Orwell.
Malaysian ruling regime has consistently portrayed itself as the primary practitioner bundle of contradiction through various platforms; how obvious else it can be when our astute national leaders belonging to the ruling elites are vigorously advocating democracy while practising something totally opposite to what they preach upon. (Well, that’s what politics is all about).
This is supposed to be an agitated writing as a response to the blockade of online daily, The Malaysian Insider (TMI), which resulted in their closure by tonight (at the time of writing).
However, writing in the tone of criticism would eventually see me behind the walls of any nearby police stations or most probably in Dang Wangi police station as “thinking critically”, “voicing criticism against ruling elites”, “alternative ideas” and “writing on what ‘you-know-who’ don’t want to read the first thing on the morning or before going to bed” is absolutely sinful and banned without mercy in our beloved motherland.
First of all, before spitting away my infuriated emotions into writing, I think the best way is to show my deepest gratitude to TMI who published my first writing about a year-and-a-half year ago, where I tried my best to blend Gramsci’s Cultural Hegemony into Malaysian context, is by expressing my utmost solidarity with TMI who has been reporting quite truthful with all its might, noteworthy that they didn’t practice censorship and that is definitely a ride on the bull’s back.
What a coincidence, the content that I wrote a long time ago is still relevant up till today and I’m absolutely not surprised. Well, this is Democracy a la Malaysia. (Have to adjust lah).
“State, government, ruling elites, repressive state apparatus, ideological state apparatus, archaic/backdated laws, police forces, educational institution” – all this played a huge role not only when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad joint hand with the oppositions to demand our beloved and democratically elected Datuk Seri Najib Razak to resign peacefully, but it all started from The Man himself, Dr Mahathir.
Put away all those political plays and sketches aside, which merely dances of the tunes of their own political agenda which carries personal aspiration than the peoples’ aspiration.
Anyway, there is no such thing as permanent enemy or friends in politics, but it is always the people who get the lollipop in the end.
What to expect in our country with ongoing restriction on freedom of expression and freedom of the press?
It is a question which has to ponder every minds and souls of the masses.
The superpower in any democratic country is none other than the united people themselves.
Divided into race, religion, zone, district, state, university and many more irrelevant sentiments would only strengthen the unruly power of the regimes.
One of the most regressive things that could happen is, people would start to practice self-censorship in afraid of legal actions that might follow their path to home.
This will also leads to a society that restricts themselves to voice out its critical thinking towards social injustice or most probably a society that would end up in lazy chair, drinking coffee – expecting others to fight their battle.
Well, that is not the problem; the problem arises when everyone starts to think in the same way. It is important to remember, resisting the injustices is a duty of every single citizen.
In the end, one thing that has been proved – a pen is always mightier than sword.
Kudos to the whole of team of TMI, thanks for being with us all this while, and my gratitude for giving an arena for me to express my concerns and ideas.
“When it gets down to having to use violence, then you are playing the system’s game. The establishment will irritate you- pull your beard, flick your face, to make you fight. Because once they’ve got you violent, then they know how to handle you. The only thing they don’t know how to handle is non-violence and humor” – John Lennon. – March 14, 2016.

VfL Wolfsburg have reportedly fined Germany striker Max Kruse €25,000 (RM114,345) after he left €75,000 in cash in a bag during an early morning taxi ride through Berlin.
The 27-year-old, who is a keen poker player, reportedly forgot the huge amount of cash in a holdall in the back of a cab in the early hours of October 18 last year.
News that Kruse had lost so much money only came to light when he lodged a complaint in February with Berlin's police, who are investigating, but his employers have taken a dim view of his carelessness.
"Some people would have never seen so much money in their lives and certainly not in cash," Wolfsburg's director of sport Klaus Allofs told German daily Bild.
"There was a conversation between Max, myself and our coach (Dieter Hecking) and he has been fined.
"We explained to him what kind of behaviour we expect from our players in their free time in public.
"I can only hope that this is a lesson for him and he will change his behaviour somewhat.
"These days, you can no longer say 'when I drive out of the training ground, I am a private person'."
Wolfsburg need no off-pitch distractions having reached the Champions League quarter-finals, but suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Kruse's negligence will do little to help his chances of adding to his 14 caps, with a place in Germany's squad for the European championships in June, as head coach Joachim Loew is known to frown upon such behaviour.
For the past two years, Kruse has opted to spend his end-of-season holiday at the World Series of Poker championships in Las Vegas.
He won US$36,000 after finishing third in one category at the poker event in 2014 while his Germany team-mates were winning the World Cup. – AFP, March 14, 2016.

– 14 Mac, 2016.

Support for Datuk Seri Najib Razak should be determined by a national referendum to settle "once and for all" if the public back him as prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.
The retired politician said he would stop demanding Najib's resignation if the majority of voters supported the prime minister in the poll.
"What really would convince people would be a national referendum or poll in which every voter in the country can express his support for Najib.
"I give an undertaking that if Najib wins in the national referendum, I will stop asking him to resign. I will not say anything more about 1MDB, the RM2.6 billion and the mansions in UK, US and Hollywood or the 'Wolf of Wall Street' pornographic film.
"Najib can continue to be the Malaysian PM for life," Dr Mahathir wrote in a blog post this evening.
The former prime minister has been criticising Najib and demanding his resignation for more than a year over alleged financial scandals involving state-owned 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and the RM2.6 billion donation that went to his personal bank accounts.
Dr Mahathir recently initiated the Citizens' Declaration to call for Najib's removal and institutional reforms, together with some Umno veterans, political foes from DAP, PKR and Parti Amanah Negara, and some civil society leaders.
The declaration's credibility and unlikely alliance has been questioned by some quarters because of Dr Mahathir's involvement, as the prime minister who modernised Malaysia but also eroded the independence of its institutions.
Dr Mahathir today said the question of Najib's popularity, as well as the people's view of his alleged financial scandals, could be settled once and for all with a referendum.
"Just a simple question will suffice: Najib-tick, Mahathir-cross – or the other way depending on who you support. Malaysians are familiar with voting.
"The referendum should be conducted by a reliable foreign public opinion company, overseen by representatives of the two people concerned.
"If I get more votes, it means the rakyat accepts what I have highlighted about Najib’s financial wrongdoings as true, then he should resign," Dr Mahathir said.
Najib, who took over the prime minister's office from Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, has denied any wrongdoing and maintained that he has the mandate of the people to lead the country.
Putrajaya, in a recent statement announcing the removal of Dr Mahathir as adviser to national oil company Petronas, also said that Najib was "democratically elected" and could only be removed in an election. http://bit.ly/24FxCV7
Dr Mahathir said that Najib could only silence him by arresting and detaining, without trial, "this pesky ex-PM" once the National Security Council Act was signed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and enforced.
"I am getting messages that this (arrest) is what awaits me if I don’t cease and desist, I don’t tone down." – March 14, 2016.

Bank Negara said today it has signed agreements with its counterparts in Thailand and the Philippines on market access and operational flexibility for lenders, as the Asean countries move towards an integrated banking market.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) established an Asean Economic Community at a summit in Kuala Lumpur in November, aiming to promote the flow of trade, capital and professional labour in a single market of 625 million people with combined economic output of US$2.6 trillion.
The bloc's 10 nations have been discussing economic and banking integration for years, with the idea of increasing access for each country's lenders to the others' markets.
"This signifies a major step forward in the advancement of an integrated banking market within Asean and towards strengthening intra-regional trade and investment," Bank Negara Malaysia, the central bank, said in a statement. No further details were given.
Bank of Thailand said the agreement was a foundation for future bilateral negotiations on the establishment of Qualified Asean Banks (QABs) in each country.
In a separate announcement, Malaysia and Thailand also appointed banks to support plans for improved trade settlement.

Mohd Daniel holds a Bachelor's degree in Aquatic Resource Science and Management and earns RM1,500 as a technical assistant in an environmental engineering firm.
He doesn't mind starting from the bottom, he says, as he knows he lacks experience.
The 23-year-old who studied at a public university said he couldn’t afford to be choosy even though his earnings did not help him cope with the increasing cost of living.
"It is not related to my field of study, but this is the only job I can get now. I cannot stay unemployed as I need to help my family and settle my loans," he told The Malaysian Insider.
He added that he was also willing to work dirty, difficult and dangerous jobs or those dubbed "3D" related to his field of study – he once applied to be a shrimp hatchery attendant but was turned down as he was considered overqualified.
"They offered RM1,200 for school leavers and didn’t want to hire me even though I was willing to work with that salary,” he said.
The reason young graduates have had to contend with low starting salaries is based on the "seniority-based pay system" used in Malaysia, said the Malaysian Employers' Federation (MEF).
"In Malaysia's context, we don’t really have rates for jobs, which is normally practised in some other developed countries where they don’t look into the length of the service to determine wage movement," its executive director Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan said.
Employers tend to feel that when they hire someone new, they are taking a risk as the employee who could turn out to be either an asset or a liability, he added.
Shamsuddin said there was a lot of pressure from many quarters over Malaysia's stagnant wages but he added that people needed to understand the seniority system used instead of the rate system for jobs.
He said the use of the seniority-based system in Malaysia was due to the adoption of the early British system of wage payment.
"Even this was adopted by the public service, the scale for an employee from the starting pay to reach the maximum can even be up to 25 years, so basically increment is given every year not because of the performance or things like that but to reward the employees for staying with the company.
"But as employers, we have introduced certain mechanisms to encourage performance and productivity.
"The factor of annual increment is no longer just because of employees staying with the company, but is also linked to the performance of employees and also the company."
However, the United Kingdom has moved away with the seniority-based system, although countries like Japan still adopt the system.
He added that it would be hard to change the salary system in Malaysia, where older employees might feel that their skills and experience are not recognised by the company.
"We are stuck with the old system, to revamp a pay system is not going to be easy."
As such, there is little movement in the growth of starting wages for graduates. The irony, says graduate Arif Luqman Shah Bani, is that employers also demand work experience.
"They are demanding for a high working experience from fresh graduates, they advertise it as entry level job but at the same time asking for three years of working experience, it's illogical," said Arif Luqman, who graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Resouce Biotechnology three months ago. He currently works part-time as an assistant restaurant manager at Kenny Rogers Roasters in Taiping.
"In my opinion, starting salary for biotech graduates should be between RM1,80 and RM2,000."
But employers usually gave RM1,500 to fresh graduates, he said, based on the offers he had received after sending out more than 150 job applications via JobStreet as well as walk-in job applications.
Another fresh graduate, Hakimi, who worked as a field assistant for a marine conservation programme at World Wildlife Fund (WWF), said his current starting salary for fresh graduates did not match the rising cost of living.
"I used to earn RM2,800 when I worked at a bank in Bangsar right after I graduated but it was barely enough for me to cover expenses like accommodation, utility bills and travelling.
"The basic pay that fresh graduates receive is quite low compared to the cost that we have spend to study," he said.
Although his current salary is RM1,000 less than at his previous job, he said it was enough as he lived and worked in Terengganu, where living costs were lower.
MEF's Shamsuddin said a study the group did last year found that the average starting salary for a basic degree holder without prior working experience was RM2,234 compared with RM2,202 in 2014 and RM2,560 for one with an honours degree in 2015, compared with RM2,559 the previous year.
For diploma holders, the average starting pay was RM1,621 in 2015, a slight increase from RM1,609 in 2014.
While a Master’s degree holder could start with RM3,146 for last year, from the previous RM3,140 in 2014, Shamsuddin these rates generally cut across all sectors. – March 14, 2016.

– Bernama, 14 Mac, 2016.

Currency markets were off to a relatively quiet start today, stabilising after last week's large swings, as investors geared up for Japanese and US central bank policy meetings that could provide them with fresh direction.
There are also interest rate decisions from the Swiss National Bank, the Australian and Norwegian central banks this week along with the Bank of England.
All these meetings are likely to provide a test of central banks' ability to successfully manage market expectations, analysts said.
The euro was little moved by German election results over the weekend, where Chancellor Angela Merkel and her conservative CDU party received a drubbing.
The euro has given up some of its post-ECB meeting gains but traders said more trimming of bets against the currency could leave it well supported above US$1.10.
The euro was steady at US$1.1136, not far from a one-month high of US$1.1218 set on Thursday when it soared after the European Central Bank eased extensively but also signalled that it may limit future interest rate cuts.
The dollar was flat at 113.75 yen having gained 0.6% on Friday.
An improvement in risk appetite on the back of rising stocks had lifted the greenback from a low of 112.225 to as high as 114.45 versus the safe-haven yen last week.
The Federal Open Market Committee meeting will be the focus.
And while signs US inflation is picking up will be seen as a positive, the Fed will be wary of sounding too hawkish, with Chair Janet Yellen likely to convey a fairly neutral tone.
"The meeting could see an acknowledgement of slightly improved conditions... the Fed wants to make sure these developments have taken hold before acting.
Such a dovish message could see downward pressure on the dollar," said Josh O'Byrne, currency strategist at Citi.
Meanwhile, the Bank of Japan, fresh from adopting negative interest rates in January, is expected to stand pat when its two-day meeting ends tomorrow.
The market will sift through the BOJ's policy statements for any hints that it may be losing confidence in negative rates after the ECB suggested it will have to be cautious on cutting rates ever deeper into negative territory.
"The potential limits of monetary policy will be the market's theme after the ECB, which adopted negative rates before the BOJ, seemingly reverted its focus back to quantitative easing last week," said Shin Kadota, chief Japan FX strategist at Barclays in Tokyo.
The BOJ's surprise decision to take rates below zero on January 29 did little to weaken the yen, which eventually soared to a 16-month high against the dollar last month. – Reuters, March 14, 2016.
