”Who are you to interpret nature through art? How do you interpret “the gift of beauty”? 

When presented with this bog prompt, I found it challenging to form an opinion on this topic. As mentioned in previous blogs, I do not have a strong relationship with nature. I often take nature for granted and act as though it is just a backdrop. I do not find inspiration from nature often and this includes inspiration in the form of art. In school, I have participated in art activities that revolved around nature, but this was strictly due to the fact that they were required assignments. I have also learned about the ways that artist express their interpretations of nature through different forms of media such as paintings, photography, sculptures, and literature. Seeing the artists artistic abilities was interesting to me but the concepts that they drew from did not pique my interest.

Although I have no interest in forming my interpretations of nature into art, I can see where art can provide others with a deeper understanding and appreciation for nature. The interpretation of nature through art is a timeless human endeavor. Artists across a variety of cultures and generations have captured the beauty of nature through a variety of mediums. These artistic mediums include photography, literature, paintings, and sculptures. Through their unique perspectives, artists offer others with a window into their own interpretation of nature and the beauty it has to offer. Interpreting nature through art goes beyond cultural differences and serves as a universally understood way to express one’s bond with nature. Art allows us to see, feel, and analyze the intricacies of nature and also allows us to form a deeper connection with nature and appreciate all the beauty nature has to offer.

When it comes to how I interpret “the gift of beauty” of nature, I define it as the idea that the nature that surrounds us has a unique and appealing appearance. It reminds us that there is natural beauty that constantly surrounds us, whether we actively seek it or not, and that the beauty of nature can provide us with moments of joy and inspiration in our lives.

All in all, although I do not interpret nature through the form of art, I can see how art can offer others with a deeper and more intimate connection with nature, encouraging others to appreciate and protect the beauty that nature has to offer. It also allows others to perceive nature through the artist point of view, possibly providing consumers with a different view of nature. It also reminds others, such as myself, that nature is not just a backdrop but a source of inspiration that can enrich our lives.

What role does “privilege” play in nature interpretation? Please include your working definition of privilege.

Privilege can play a significant role in nature interpretation as it can influence the way people connect with nature. Privilege can also play a significant role in one’s ability to access and benefit from nature. I interpreted the term ‘privilege’ as unearned advantages that individuals may have in society due to a variety of different factors such as class, gender, race, and social identity.

Financial privilege often plays a role in determining who has easier access to natural spaces. Individual’s who are more financially secure tend to have easier access to natural spaces and can engage in more outdoor activities. This is simply because they are more likely to be able to afford the costs associated with nature opportunities such as travelling, outdoor gear, and participating in guided nature experiences. Those who are not as financially stable may find it more difficult to access natural spaces and engage in outdoor activities. This can limit their ability to explore nature as they may not be able to explore different climates, engage in paid nature experiences such as tours, or get proper outdoor gear for things such as camping. This can ultimately make it more difficult for them to connect and interpret nature as their opportunities are limited.

Privilege can also affect individual’s sense of safety while in nature. Individual’s who do not experience discrimination due to their race or social identity tend to feel safer in outdoor settings. They can enjoy outdoor activities without any added stress from discomfort, while others may face bias, harassment, and discomfort, making it more difficult for them to connect and interpret nature.

Privilege can also shape the quality of environmental education and awareness that students receive. Schools in wealthier areas tend to have better resources for environmental education and provide students with more opportunities to explore and further connect with nature while lower income communities and schools may lack resources for kids to explore these opportunities in nature and can ultimately affect how they interpret and understand environmental issues or lack there of.

All in all, privilege plays a significant role on one’s nature interpretation. It not only determines who has easier access to outdoor spaces but also affects one’s sense of safety and their quality of education. Recognizing and addressing privilege when it comes to nature interpretation is important for promoting equity and inclusivity, ensuring that everyone, no matter their background or financial status, has the same opportunities to grow their connect with nature.

“Describe your ideal role of environmental interpreter. What might it entail? Where might it be? What skills might you need?”

As someone who does not have a strong interest in nature, choosing an ideal role as a nature interpreter was difficult for me. Realistically, a role as a nature interpreter is not for me but when looking for a role, I found myself leaning towards roles on the business side rather than the outdoors roles.

I feel as though that a nature interpreter role that gears more towards the business side of things would allow me to be more enthusiastic about my role when compared to a role that actively engages with nature. The business role that spoke to me the most was a creative marketing strategist in the entertainment industry. This role would include developing marketing strategies for entertainment companies, conducting market research to inform marketing strategies, oversee the production of promotional content, and negotiating partnerships. Regarding our brand, we would be promoting sustainability tour consumers. Its important to me to promote sustainability so that we can address the environmental challenges we are facing while building a more sustainable future for our planet.

Regarding location, I would prefer to be relocated to the Caribbean. Growing up, every year my family would take a trip to the Caribbean and every year I look forward to it. I love everything about the Caribbean climate from the warm temperatures to the natural beauty of the region. Relocating to the Caribbean as a creative marketing strategist in the entertainment industry for sustainability would be great since The Caribbean is significantly impacted by climate change in ways such as rising sea levels, degradation of coral reefs, and more frequent and severe hurricanes. By promoting sustainability in this region, it would allow us to increase resilience to these challenges. Promoting sustainability in the Caribbean is also essential to the region’s environmental conservation and economic stability,

I would love to partner with Caribbean businesses and resorts to educate and integrate sustainability into the services and products that they offer consumers. This role would intrigue me since it gives me the chance to make a significant impact on local conservation efforts. It would also provide me with fulfillment of educating and inspiring others to protect the environment. Most of all, I would love to have the opportunity to live, work, and protect the Caribbean region. In this role, I would not only get to explore the natural beauty of the Caribbean but also contribute to increasing sustainability and making a positive difference in the climate I love.

All in all, being a nature interpreter would most definitely not be my first choice but if I had to go into that field, I would much rather be in the Caribbean region doing more business operations rather than engaging in the physical environment. I know that that’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but that it what spoke to me the most.

“Describe your current relationship with nature. How has this developed/evolved? Who offered you “a sense of place,” as described in our textbook?”

My current relationship with nature is different than most. I have a weak and complex relationship with nature. I am someone who does not frequently go outdoors but I can appreciate the beauty and complexity of nature.

I believe that my relationship with nature has weakened over time due to my struggle to embrace the Canadian climate, where long and harsh winters are the norm. The heavy snow falls, and the cold, deter me from spending extended periods of time outdoors during these months. Although I do not always appreciate the Canadian winters, every year I eagerly anticipate the summer months. The moment the snow melts, heat and UV index increases, I feel a strong desire to reconnect with nature. When the summer months arrive, I try my best to take advantage of the warmth and greenery that the Canadian summer has to offer.  During these months, my relationship with nature starts to strengthen as I immerse myself more with nature to specifically seek a tan. While I may not engage with nature in the traditional sense, the moments I spend under the sun allows me to form a connection with the warmth and beauty of the summer months. Although my interactions with nature may be limited to specific seasons, they serve as a reminder of the beauty and joys that nature can offer, even when facing the challenging weather connections.

While I may not immerse in the nature of the Canadian climate, I do often find myself drawn to the tropical climate. My appreciation for nature mostly comes from the desire to travel to the tropical regions and connect myself in what the nature has to offer such as tropical beaches. Although I would not classify myself as an outdoors person, I find myself spending as much time as I can outside while on family trips to the Caribbean as it gives me a “sense of place.” While on these trips, I love to soak in the UV, gaze at the sea while the sun reflects off it and walk on the beaches. At these times, I feel most like myself and I feel the most connected to nature than I ever have. When I am not on vacation, I also often surround myself with tropical houseplants and décor, attempting to recreate that joyful feeling I get while in the tropics. Although I may not physically experience the Canadian outdoors very often, my fascination for the tropical climate helps me maintain a more positive relationship with nature.

Though I may never be the type of person to roam through forests or go on hikes, my relationship with nature can gradually strengthen through my commitment to understanding and respecting it.
