me everytime I see someone call Kagami a lesbian despite she canonly likes a boy and yall could easily headcanon her as bi/pan if you simply wanted her to be into girls too because that’s awesome but you all just hate bi/pan ppl and it shows
THIS.
I definitely think there are a lot of people who are bi/pan-phobic in fandom and unfortunately that does affect headcanons and fan content way more than it should and that’s really unfortunate.
But I think it’s unfair to label anyone who would headcanon kagami as bi or pan phobic over a headcanon. Kagami could be bi or pan! But a lot of people had developed the headcanon that she was a lesbian before she started showing clear interest in Adrien in canon. Sometimes people have headcanons because they want to project onto a character they relate to and no other reasons and I think it’s a little unfair to tell them they can’t do that. Many lesbians have had experiences dating men before realizing their identities and I think it’s possible for them to see their experience mirrored within characters who may have crushes on male characters in the canon.
Some people may be headcanoning Kagami as a lesbian because they’re bi/pan-phobic and that would really suck, but I also think to imply everyone who has this headcanon to have it be coming from a harmful place when Kagami has no canon sexuality is perhaps misguided.
I hope I don’t sound overly argumentative because that’s not my intention! I just think headcanons can be pretty personal to people and help them with their own lives and implying people are being harmful about them when things are almost always up to interpretation can be concerning in the long run.
@mari-monsta I totally get what you’re trying to say here and thank you for saying it in a tactful way <3 But also I think you’re missing the point here a bit.
I understand wanting to see yourself and your sexuality represented in the media you consume (we need more canonically queer characters!) but it shouldnt come at the cost of taking representation away from other marginalized communities. So when people step in and say “I see this female character who has canonically been shown to have romantic feelings for a male character as a lesbian because lots of lesbians have phases where they dont even know theyre gay yet” it sort of undermines the experience of bi/pan people, reminding us yet again that we’re widely seen as some sort of stepping stone to being fully gay rather than a valid identity of our own. To me, it reads alot like someone saying “Rose and Juleka are strongly hinted to be in a romantic relationship but I headcanon them as straight still because theyre young and their attraction to girls is probably a phase”. Like yeah… I guess that could be true, but it seems disingenuous to the character to write off such a big part of their personality. The same goes for attributing m/f attraction as being momentary confusion or some “mistake” young people make.
Don’t get me wrong: Compulsery heterosexuality is definately a thing that exists, and affects many gays/lesbains (and bi/pan folk too believe it or not!). But to write off every instance of “"opposite gender”“ attraction as nothing more than a phase brought on by societal pressure is biphobic. Maybe not overtly, and maybe not with malicious intent, but it is. However subtle, it sends the message to bi/pan people that “Your identity is a phase. You are a gay/lesbian in denial. You will never be accepted within the queer community until you start performing your sexuality in a way that we find palatable.”
So yeah, Im all for people having headcanons that contradict what we’ve been shown in canon- because what else is fandom for if not to make media more appealing to ourselves -but I do wish some people would sit down and really think about why they need to disregard established aspects of a character in order to view them as gay/lesbian rather than bi/pan. Because as a bi woman, I get SO excited over Lesbian characters! Theyre a woman who likes women and thats relatable!! My attraction to women may not be exclusive, but I love seeing wlw characters (regardless if they share my exact label) because thats respesentation baby!!!
So by all means, have your headcanons. But also realize that you can still project onto characters who’ve been shown to canonically be attracted to men without erasing that part of them. You can ship Kagami with Marinette or Chloe or any number of other girls without denying her attraction to Adrien. It’s not going to make her any less queer. Bi/Pan people arent Watered-Down Gay. We aren’t Lesbain Lite. What we are is a part of the LGBTQ+ community who need media representation same as any other, and that starts with acceptance within fandom spaces <3
