i feel like social media apps with short-form video content have reached a critical point where users need to just. get off the app and never come back.
The desire for likes and views and by extension your attention have led content creators into a race for the bottom to see who can overstimulate the most. Most videos have quick cuts while narrators speak quickly and use ample sound and visual effects. Information starts flowing the moment you scroll to the next video (no millennial pause!) So many videos have burned in-captions, which can be an accessibility tool but not when each individual word is displayed on the screen so users don't even have to move their eyes! Combine this with built-in 2x speed settings and just generally having content that flows forever and is always on a device within your pocket and you have a recipe for a black hole for your attention.
Obviously I wouldn't be writing this without having extensive social media use myself so I'm not trying to judge others or say that social media use in this way is some kind of moral failure. I just think that we need to have a serious reflection on what these social media apps are worth and if their benefits outweigh their harms. Also, not all social media apps are the same. Platforms that focus on text-based content or long-form videos might be better, but it's a sliding spectrum and many platforms have multiple media types.
Combine this with a growing hunger for your data, which social media companies collect an incomprehensible amount of, and using these platforms doesn't really feel like a fair trade.

you download Hinge thinking it’ll be a window into the world but find out it’s actually a mirror
It's not Valentine's Day yet, but it's never too early to profess your love.

average gay guy problems: i have been hooking up with my hockey rival, but now i am developing feelings for him and nobody can know! >_< also nobody serves ginger ale
average lesbian problems: my wife died when an alien virus turned all of humanity into a hivemind and then said hivemind sent a woman who looks like a female version of my romantasy hero to charm me into complacency, which i resisted at first but then i got lonely and now i think i am falling for her >_< also john cena said the hivemind is eating people
And don't forget to stay up til 3 am every night doing nothing productive for no reason every day for a month

"lol tiktok users would rather learn mandarin than come to tumblr" yeah man that's crazy. who would have thought that people from the video-based dopamine-machine app wouldn't decide to join the text- and image- based no-algorithm website?
If you stop looking at your phone in every free moment it will feel a lot more anxiety-inducing at first but after a day or two you will settle into a slower way of thinking and eventually you will spend the whole morning looking at the sun rise through the window while you sip coffee or hold your sleeping partner and your thoughts wont feel like they’re on a treadmill
There no shame in never becoming fluent in your target language(s). Learning a new language even a little bit is great. Having the ability to communicate even a little bit is great. Learning about the culture(s) is great. You're doing great. Enjoy the experience.
I made a little fox on a clementine ^^ That's was not easy but very fun to do
