i just think you understood the assignment abt mr fairfield. bhvr wouldn't get it. i think that you capture dwight's inherent vulnerabilities, but that part of it, the open and selfless heart of it all, makes him such a good leader that people trust and look to. yes he's our little guy but also there's so much more complexity to him and ur voice for him feels spot on. i am simply stoked to see you and him upon the dash

 weh.... thank you. i've been writing our dear mr. fairfield on and off since 2018 on this hellsite and my portrayal's gone through a lot of changes over the years, but i'm glad he seems to have settled into a consistent and comfortable place. i'm also very glad i stumbled upon your blog again and that you were still active; our old interactions (both dash & ic) are some i remember very fondly. ash dad-ing jake, chad fawning over tommy. you always put so much thought and care into your characters and it's a delight to see. also i simp for your art, always.

 also thinking about the time i spent writing dwight as deaf, able to teach the survivors how to silently communicate during trials at various distances with ASL. also lent itself well to him always carrying his notebook around to help with expressing things beyond what others could understand of his signing. something something silent leader that's able to rally everyone together and teach them to work as a team.

 i think a lot about dwight and his intense drive for fairness and justice. he's been consistently mistreated throughout his entire life, from school to sports to the many jobs he acquired and lost, and he just... rolls with it, tries to laugh it off when he's pushed around, verbally or physically.

 but the one time he sees his coworker suffering at the hands of their boss, he takes it upon himself to seek revenge because she didn't deserve what was done to her. and therein lies a major character point — he'll do what he thinks is right and fair for others, but sees himself as undeserving of the same treatment. he stands up for others and their rights, but won't do the same for himself.

 call him a nerd if you want, but he absolutely keeps a little mini notebook in his shirt pocket that, with jake's help, is filled with detailed notes and sketches about the different areas in the realm -- mapping out generator spots, where totems spawn, building layouts, etc. he also takes extensive notes on the killers and theorizes about the best ways to counter them as they grow in power and gain new abilities.

she's casually slipping him a doodle that she drew...

 almost warily , he accepts the slip of paper handed to him , and it takes him a moment and a quick straightening of his glasses to realize exactly what he's looking at.

 ❛ wait , is . . . is this me? ❜ he asks , tone a mix of incredulity and awe. the more he looks at it , the cuter it gets , something he'd admittedly never expected from the punk chick with a chip on her shoulder. then again , he should know better than anyone that people can surprise you. ❛ this is . . . you did this? you made this. wait , he even has a little tie! ❜

 she's never seen him this excited , and he's sure that his current energy levels are not something she wants to be around. but as small of a gesture as it may seem , he now considers this a cherished possession , and tucks it into the small flap in the front of his pocket notebook for safekeeping.

 he's no artist , but he finds himself scribbling away several hours later to try and repay the favor.

 i'm in tears thinking about baby OG survs' first few trials and how they haven't figured out a good system yet, so they're struggling to do gens and run the killer and work at all cohesively, etc. nobody really likes dwight yet, probably thinks of him as spineless, useless — because, in all honesty, he was when he first got to the realm. he couldn't contribute the same way the others could, and probably ran out the exit gate the first chance he got.

 anyway the time finally comes to leave and everyone's injured and on their last legs, making a break for the gates — and there's dwight in the middle of the map, calling out to the killer to come and get him. just standing perfectly still, arms out, trying so hard to be brave but he's shaking and his face is covered in tears, but he's staying. he wants to be helpful and strong and if that means letting the killer have him in their stead, then so be it. it's the first modicum of respect he earns before settling into his role as their leader.

thinkin about... a regular-ass au where the survivors are all just in a d&d group together. dwight, the gm / paladin. claudette, the cleric. jake, the druid. nea, the rogue. meg, the monk. kate, the bard. etc, etc.

in her open palm is a bracelet, hardly anything worth showing off really. she had woven it of thin strips of different colored cloth - mostly greens & blues - and a few small beads, long dulled to shine. claudette's gaze is anywhere but towards him, as though the simple thought of it all was too much to be direct. she was never very good at making friends. '' i , um [. . .] have one that kind of matches. if you would like to. ''

  bright eyes flit between the offering held almost warily in her open hand and what he can see of her face , turned away in what he recognizes from his own experiences as fear. he'd like to think that he'd never given her any reason to be scared of him , but he knows better than anyone that fear doesn't always need a reason to manifest.

  without a word , dwight plucks the makeshift bracelet from her hand and slips it over his hand , tightens it enough that it rests comfortably on his wrist.
