It’s time more people become familiar with Female Genital Mutilation.

First and foremost, I will express how serious I am about intactivism, (leaving your child’s genitals just as they are) in general. I absolutely do not believe that any child should have their genitals altered unless there is a medical need. The foreskin of a penis, much like the inside of a vagina, is mostly self-cleaning and, with proper maintenance, will cause no problems. The practice of routine infant circumcision started with Judaism because it was thought that intact men were dirty and would not be granted access to Heaven. It has become extremely prevalent, especially in America, for parents to automatically snip their male infants with no reason. It is generally true that the pain is minimal and that, as long as it is done early, the child will not remember. But that still does not make it okay. You are altering your child’s body without his permission. It is irreversible and many adult men express grief that they did not have a say in the matter. With that being said, I PERSONALLY find female genital mutilation to be a million times more barbaric than routine infant circumcision. Here is why:

FGM is practiced ONLY so that women do not feel sexual pleasure and/or cannot have sex. In most cases, part of the clitoris is cut away as to sever the nerve endings that help cause arousal and orgasm. In some cases, however, the vaginal opening is sewed up, as well, usually leaving a small hole for menstruation. It has been documented that more than 90% of FGM is done with dirty tools (rusty razorblades, mud covered spearheads, makeshift knives, etc) and is performed in an unsanitary space. A significant amount of girls and women suffer blood loss, shock, or infection that leads to death. Mothers who were victims of FGM are forced to hold down their young daughters and watch as they have their genitals mutilated, as well. In some places, over 80% of the local females are cut and mutilated. If a mother refuses to let it be done to her daughter, she runs the risk of getting them both murdered.

So you see, while male infant circumcision is still unneeded and barbaric, FGM is that much more serious. Every single day, while you’re ordering your Starbucks or playing your video games, little girls around the world are being tortured and killed simply because men do not believe they deserve the pleasure of sex. Please do not forget this.

I am glad there is a post bringing attention to this serious and horrendous subject, but I just want to clarify that the origins of male circumcision is that in Judaism it’s supposed to be ‘an outward physical sign of the eternal covenant between God and the Jewish people,’ not initially being related to any sort of hygiene concerns, or that people who didn’t were dirty and wouldn’t get into heaven.
