I had great fun photographing Andrew Bates for a recent piece in the Metro.co.uk on living with HIV. 

I took the photos a week and a half before running the Snowdonia Marathon and we hit it off chatting about how hard running is 😂.

...After five minutes, I reached my destination: a place of daily pilgrimage for my elderly landlord, Mr. Das — a place shifting with minute changes each day, and more dramatically through the seasons. My eyes were drawn everywhere at once, sounds crowded the air and a swarm of smells rushed forward in olfactory assault...

Over the past 18 months, Luke and I took to the road to photograph eleven everyday runners that Luke had interviewed for a magazine project called 'Run for Your Life'.

After each portrait session, I'd ask each runner to go on a quick run to get out of breath, and then stand in front of my camera while I took a series of images of them breathing. Graciously, they all agreed. Looking back through these images, it struck me how beautiful, spacious and intimate these stop-motion frames were—neatly reflecting the beauty of their stories.

So, using that footage, I put together this 'breath advert' to promote the Kickstarter campaign.

A sneak peek at a project that I’m finally getting round to releasing, shot in India almost two years ago now, via a few images published in the latest issue of Rake’s Progress magazine.

“Price grew tired of seeing the same images of famine, poverty and sadness often seen in South Sudan. “I’m fed up with the hegemony of this discourse - it’s boring,” he says. “You see that again and again and again and it makes no real difference to how people think about these places. I didn’t want to just come back with the stereotypes and cliches.”

Babies definitely on the brain at the moment. I was just remembering Kamla, who I met in 2015, who supervises a primary health care centre in rural Rajasthan, overseeing around 30-40 deliveries a month. A steady pair of hands. As we wait now, one week past the due date, my mind is inevitably drawn to THE BIG MOMENT, I'm already feeling incredibly grateful for the network of amazing health care professionals who will guide us, trembling, through the unknown and into a whole new adventure. Before I started this little project, I think I secretly spent most of my time thinking that all the exciting things happened elsewhere, that a ‘story’ only happened to people who live their lives in series of unattainable adventures...

'Speaking to people that afternoon, they surprised us again by talking proudly about South Sudan. But this pride wasn’t the sort of triumphant nationalism that mindlessly believes in the superiority of their own territory. This pride was more akin to hope.' 

In March, I revisited South Sudan, expecting to see scenes reminiscent of the famines of the late 20th century. We did see hunger and need, but what I was much less prepared for was the strength and resilience in the faces and stories of the people we met.

'Being South Sudanese is a great gift. I am here today living in the UK. I was not born in Britain but they respected me as a citizen. Where I am living now, I’ve got a lot of friends from different ethnic backgrounds, they could be Bangladeshi, British, from the midlands, Yorkshire — anywhere and they are still my friend because we are sharing and living in the same country and we have respect between us. That’s what unites us as human beings. You respect me and I respect you.'

I met Martha over a year ago, at a gathering of South Sudanese diaspora in the UK. She and others spoke honestly and powerfully of their lives back home in South Sudan, how they've adjusted to life in the UK and their hopes and fears for the country they left behind.

Some copies of Tearfund's Tear Times popped through my letterbox today and that's my photograph on the cover! 🙌 Travelling to Nepal in March this year I met some brilliant people. It's really great to see those stories in print, connecting up communities, opening up avenues of support, solidarity and hope. Beautiful.
