They obviously realize the chemistry between Rarity and Applejack, and continue to bait the audience with it:

But rather than expanding on their relationship (or even just ignoring it), they try to capitalize on it by making a male Rarity analogue for Applejack, and a male AJ analogue for Rarity. That way, the relationships are heterosexual (and thus socially acceptable), and most of all, marketable.

It’s so mean-spirited, and homophobic, like they’re so terrified of the foggiest iota of queer relationships that they’d force these utterly contrived, hetero relationships with these bland, engineered male love interests, all to avoid those icky gays! Hasbro continues to spit in the face of its LGBT audience with this shit and I am so tired of it
