Tony Gum starring as uTony for the Chloe Cart Blanche campaign: Klo Way (2020).
‘Klo Way’ is a South African colloquial, a combining of words ‘kulo’ meaning at/there in isiXhosa; and ‘way’ (phonetically pronounced ‘weigh’) meaning place or thing.
The story subtly illustrates a curated environment of the ‘place or thing’ by emulating portraits taken emcimbini (a cultural family gathering). These portraits are seen through a fourth wall which reveals the candid actions and moods of the attendees. Giving little reason as to why umcimbi is being conducted, emphasis is placed on the various versions of uTony just being present.

my first painting exhibition - eek.
2020 really incited the difference. i was quite eager to creatively embark on something that scared me (painting), whilst knowing very well i had a knack for it. amongst the chaos, life was at a stand still it and highlighted the theme that would go on to become:
yet still-life is still life and still... there is life.
a metaphorical cringe (some might say) but it extends an appreciation for the inanimate objects which surround our everyday existence, and beckons to state that even the breathless objects do have life.
you feel me?
captured here is the painting titled: it’s pronounced ‘goom’. an attempt at correction. so if you, like many, didn’t know how pronounce my surname correctly - here it it :)
