Yesterday was Baconfest here in Shanghai, an annual event where professional and amateur chefs gather and compete to create the best original bacon-based dish…
The real winners are the fans though, who get to sample everyone’s cooking and cast their vote for their favorite. Here’s a look at this year’s event, held at the outdoor terrace outside the new Ruijin Cajun at 800 Show…
The first dish we tried after entering was Jalapeno’s special “hot roll”, homemade sausage stuffed with jalapeno peppers then wrapped in thick cut bacon and smoked for hours…
It was then sliced and fried in bacon fat before serving…
Next it was over to Motorsmoke where the crew had quite the set up, the main attraction being beef brisket double wrapped in bacon, smoked and slow-roasted right up until the event began…
The brisket was cut and served with the bacon on toothpicks, where they first encouraged you to try it plain…
Then with their homemade hot sauce…
There was also plenty of extra bacon…
Which you were encouraged to pick at as you liked…
And while everyone else was running out of food, these devious dudes from Detroit pleased the hungry hoardes by pulling out a second brisket…
They were also selling handmade beef jerky…
The Cure, which offers home delivery of bacon here in Shanghai, was frying up their products next door…
While Amelia’s was offering up two British classics…
Bacon butties and bacon-topped scotch eggs…
I particularly enjoyed the buttie, served with one of their original sauces…
By the time we got to the bacon taco stand, they were sold out…
But then it was over to the Kakadu where the Aussies had wrapped a whole alligator in bacon and grilled it…
They served the gator and bacon on tortilla chips with their house salsa and sour cream…
As most of the food was gone by 5pm, the Jalapeno team kept folks fed by simply frying up bacon and serving it with hot sauce…
Shots of bacon-infused whiskey closed out the event…
