Ha ha ha, I lived fast, died young, burned bright and look at it all. I didnāt do anything. I was a slave, a pretty little thing for a powerful man and his powerful friends. I wasnāt anything special then and Iām not anything special now. Iām just a gem who couldāve been right?
I wonder what I wouldāve been? Hmm, we used to play that game, me and all of Aceās people. Weād lay awake at night and think about what gems weād turn into when he got bored of us. Maybe it was morbid but hey it was realistic too. In our line of work you never could tell when the Boss Man would get bored and decide you werenāt much alive so better off dead.
There was a guy, really pretty guy, delicate almost right? He had these eyes, real pretty, uh a sky blue? Kinda? Real real blue at least and heād cry sometimes and youād think sapphires were falling from his eyes. When he got shot in the leg, clean through, broke the bone and everything, Ace decided it was a waste of time getting him fixed so he got gemmed. That guy turned into the prettiest lapis lazuli I ever saw, nice deep blue with streaks of goldy yellow.
Another guy, he was older than me, a gambler I think. He used to try to get the collar off, heād saw at it with rusty old knives until they broke, almost choke himself pulling at it. Heād stay up all night fighting with it and in the morning his neck would be all bruised up purple and blue. When Ace caught him sticking a fork between the collar and his neck, he got gemmed too. He gemmed the same colour as his bruises, all dark purple and blue stones.
What would I gem? Would I be pretty sunshine yellow like my hair? People here call me Topaz now andā¦and I dunno, I like it better than my real name or well it wasnāt my real name but it was the one I had, you know? Ace gave me that name and when he said it, it was like he was calling a pet or something so I mean, Topazās better than that, right?
So would I have been yellow topaz? Bright and sparkly, pretty and almost expensive? Maybe I wouldāa been brown like my eyes, a dark brown, nice and deep like the dirt after rainstorms. Yeah, brown like the dirt with the earthworms and stuff moving in it. I dunno any brown gems, Ace never got too much dark gems from us but maybe I woulda been the exception.
After all, I was the exception when we all got wacked. Ha, yeah I was. I was special in those last few seconds when that thing told me what the plan was. Me, Topaz! I was the only one who got to hear the plan, not even Ace got that, and then I got saved. Well I mean, he said he was saving me but really I just died and mmm well, this aināt so bad. Being dead aināt as bad as being alive, I donāt hurt anymore, donāt need food, canāt die again thatās for sure.
Fyodor calls me Topaz and itās not my name but he never asked my name and I like it. Topaz makes me feel like Iām worth something, maybe not to him cause he doesnāt care about pebbles but to someone. Or well, maybe thatās not fair to say because he does care about me, in a way. He doesnāt hurt me and he doesnāt treat me like a disposable asset. He could kill me just as easy as Ace but he doesnāt and he didnāt and I donāt know why but I donāt ask him.

Oh, I do have those. Actually I have decks of many kinds and I keep them for different situations. But, hear me, pretty gem, if youāre going to use bladed cards you need to be extra careful! Dealing with the cuts afterwards is horrible. The same can be said of my other decks, though. Paper cuts are nasty.
And yes, I am a magician. Do you want to see a trick? I can make a man or several disappear!

Hm, now that I think about it, I donāt have many. If you want to take care of my collection of cards and guns that would be wonderful! Do you know how to handle guns, boy? Iāve been thinking about acquiring some ornate daggers and other kinds of blades. Or perhaps you could take care of my extensive collection if wigs, hats, capes. Thereās also my tools for shows andā why do I own so many things? Oh, yeah, I like owning things.
