A Bit About The Turmoil In The Zine Community
I’ve debated for a long time about whether or not to make this post from this zine, but after seeing some recent messages in the inbox with well wishes (and well-placed concerns) I feel I can’t put it off any longer.
Some of you may know about recent events that have rocked the zine community. A mod on several projects in two different fandoms (Voltron & BNHA) has made off with quite a large sum of money. This mod, called GG or Astraldefender/gutgemact (a now deleted blog and a now made-private blog respectively), also effectively ghosted her mod teams, and left them without access to blogs, storefronts, emails and google drives for the projects affected.
Those of you that follow my blog @kingotabek have probably already seen that I’ve made SEVERAL statements about this situation, as I was on not one, but two of the mod teams left behind in the wreckage. Specifically I was involved with the @vld-occult-zine and the @vld-au-zinecollection Heith Edition.
At no point did myself, or the other team members ghosted by GG, have access to essential things for these projects. We still have no exact knowledge of funds, as GG alone had control of the financials, and we were denied updates and communication at every turn.
A project GG started in the BNHA fandom, the @bnha-hallowzine was the first project to suffer at her hands. The collapse of it, and subsequently the exposure of her mishandlings, are ultimately what lead to the fall of the Voltron projects.
The mods left behind (me included) gathered in the wake of community panic, and did our best to form plans, and conduct emails to GG herself. We flooded questions from customers, and we drafted and sent a request to GG.
We asked her to turn the passwords, money, already purchased merch, and any other essentials needed to continue these projects, over to us. We sent this request at the beginning of December via the last known-to-be-working email address for GG, and we gave her a deadline of Dec 15th to give it all up.
At this point the BNHA project had already labeled her a scammer…. but we in the Voltron fandom held out hope. GG managed to refund the money she had taken from her BNHA project, and we wanted to believe she would do the same for her Voltron projects.
Instead the response we received from her was an unsatisfactory excuse and a hasty “I’ll get everything together to hand over.” We asked for clarification on this statement, and a date for hand-off.
In return we were ghosted. No further communication was achieved. Many of the mods left behind were blocked by GG’s accounts, and some of her accounts were even deleted.
At this point the gathered mods decided we had to dissolve these projects, and guide all customers toward seeking refunds. (We were still in good faith that GG would refund the way she did the BNHA zine).
This was very hard for us, as we had to do so by posting and spreading word through our personal accounts, having no access to the social media for the affected zines (minus the occult zine). We also had our own work mixed up in the fray, as many of us were contributors as well as mods, and some of us had even purchased the zines we weren’t modding over, making us customers too.
We made our posts, we held our breath, and we waited. We waited for someone, a customer, contributor or a mod, to finally receive a response from GG, and we waited for refunds to begin.
Unfortunately, neither of these things happened.
As it stands, we’ve rolled over into the year 2019, and GG has truly ghosted everyone. She has officially been tagged with the label scammer and none of the remaining mods are willing to defend her from it.
It is estimated the amount of money in her hands equals over $20,000 dollars, and talk of legal action has begun from both contributors/mods and customers alike.
As she has made no move to refund this money, we advise all customers to file chargebacks with their banks if they ordered from projects such as @bnha-hallowzine, @vld-au-zinecollection, @vld-occult-zine or any other projects offilliated with GG. Including a BNHA birthday zine, and a merch shop called Premium Garbage Merch.
I would like to state that GG was in NO WAY involved in the production or care of Kings On Ice Zines or any of my affiliated and completed projects.
I simply wish to use this platform to spread word, as word has already spread far enough to effect this blog.
If you seek any further information I do ask that you check posts on my main blog @kingotabek (I also ask that all contact about the situation be sent to my Kingotabek blog, as any sent to kingsonicezine will not be answered).
You can also read posts by others affected such as @tootsonnewts @deafmic and even the @vld-occult-zine blog.
Im very sorry to interrupt the flow of this zine’s blog, and of your timelines with such harrowing information, but I feel it necessary to call out this situation on all platforms that I am able.
Until The Next Time We Skate Together,
