Am I going to run hill sprints today in 30 degree weather? Probably
Eh, no
How long do I have to pretend to move the mouse around on my work laptop before this day is oooover
So normally I just run easy runs and I run for progressively longer and longer distances. I like doing that. But I'm liking it less now that I've finished my goal 6 hour race. I'm doing a fun little 6k trail race in August and because 6k ain't nothin for me these days, I decided to actually put together a training plan so that I can try to get faster.
Yesterday the run was about 15 minutes suuuuper slow, then 10 minutes comfortably hard, followed by 15 minutes suuuuuper slow again. It. Was. Excellent. Breaking the run up into different paces made the whole thing feel so manageable and it was super fun to see how varied I can actually get.
Programming the paces in my watch was super interesting:
When I'm trying to run super slow, my watch buzzes me to tell me that it's actually not slow enough, so I can learn to really pull down my effort even more when I'm supposed to. This will help me run more without hurting myself. Your lungs and aerobic system improve WAY faster than your musculo-skeletal system, so I kept reminding myself "you have to go slow to protect your body, even though your lungs feel like they aren't working as hard as they can."
Then, when I'm pushing to run a bit faster in the comfortably hard range, my watch kept buzzing to prevent me from going too fast so that I can sustain it for longer. I can run real fast when I want to, but I'm trying to build up to be able to do it for more than 10 minutes at a time, so I can't blow myself out of the water and die by 5 minutes--I have to stay controlled!
Anyways, 40 minutes and 5.5 km just flew by and I can't wait to get outside again.
Am I going to run hill sprints today in 30 degree weather? Probably
The ground is downright SQUISHY outside and it hasn't rained since the weekend and it's been very very warm.
Brad spent all day relandscaping the front yard because we realized that all this water has caused a bunch of erosion and pitting. He build a swale to try to better channel water away from the house and we'll pick up those downspout extenders too. Today he's cutting out the framing downstairs so we can see the joints between the floor and the wall and see if there's a bandaid patch solution we can try (he's deep in research mode) to fill any cracks until the worst of this water logging subsides.
While we were outside last night we could hear one of the new infill's sump pumps churning water out and it hasn't rained in days...that's how much water there is everywhere. These idiot builders tho... the water is dumping directly back down into their foundation:
Which is at least an improvement from how it was functioning before:

The last minute of this song gets me every time. So so great
listening to the same album over and over is good for your health btw
So, I was looking at my survivorfest stats from my watch again to try to get something usable for a training-pace calculator, and I ran 21k before stopping to walk. That's actually pretty dang good! And my pace up to that point was remarkably consistent too. If I had been able to keep that up, I would have for sure made my 42k goal in the allotted time - as long as my hip held, that is. I mean, it's horrible pacing for a marathon, but I think it's alright for a hot loopy half marathon. It's 100% true that the last 10km is considered the "second half" of the marathon - that's where I crashed anyways lol
I'm going to Denny's tomorrow for lunch with two gals I used to teach with who also quit at the same time I did! Can't wait!
I have to flag this guy as one of the primo youtube channels for weather reporting. I have learned SO MUCH about how winds and air patterns work, why weather modelling hasn't been great lately, and what's going on with the atmosphere just from watching his videos. He's based in Alberta so his focus is western canada, but ultimately all our weather is connected so he always goes deep into the bigger patterns and how things are all connected.
If you're in Ontario, this is a good one for you as well - sounds like you're about to get some reprieve from the smoke, and it sounds like things are about to get real bad for us out west.
Well, the basement is still leaking. The eaves are fine and functioning well, there are no obvious cracks in the foundation, though there are cracks in the floor. The space between our house and the neighbour's is graded really well and the gutters are pointed away from that area, but it still seems pretty wet after only 1 heavy rain, even after days and days of high high heat. We have to move twin A out of his room again and go to plan B which is likely more labour intensive. It means that I lose my office for a while too because the kiddo needs a room more than I need to send my little emails lol.
Anyways, this is not fun!
It’s 30 degrees and my house is designed to hold heat. lol I complained about the cold so I’m not complaining, it’s just very hot with no AC. Should only be a couple weeks.
I have been feeling kinda sick for the past couple days. It’s my upper neck- it’s sore and shooting pain into my head and making me kinda nauseous. I spent the entire day in my pyjamas on the couch and working on school. I’m so tired of school!
Whoever wrote this still did a better job than AI would have. I vote we have this person write ALL film synopses from now on.
I thought they were relaxing the rules for infill housing to create more opportunities for affordable housing, but it does seem like it's going predominantly to very wealthy students who smoke a loooot of weed
I'm tempted to sign up for a fall 5k. There's a pretty popular one in late September and the timing would mean more of my training would happen when things cool down a bit. I've never actually TRAINED for a 5k before so it would be a neat challenge and hopefully I could get a little faster?
